News Project Update #46: Progress Diary #4

The investment allows us to continue development of the game beyond the initial release. It doesn't change the game we are making.

That's great news. :)

Couple of questions to follow on from this.

1) Does this mean that should slippage occur (as it can do for all kinds of reasons) the risk is minimal that the project will run out of money?

2) Does it mean that the development of the first two expansions (SPL and walking around) isn't quite so dependent on the retail sales of the game?

Yes, although obviously we want the game to be a commercial as well as critical success.

I read this over on the Kickstarter site.

At the moment we can't reveal too much about the additional investment, we just wanted to give you guys a heads up before the news starts coming out.

Does this mean that eventually we will find out who the investors are? If it's investment from outside the games industry, then I don't really see that there's any need to know their identities, or details of the investment. I would trust that the board at Frontier have made a deal that's good for the company, good for the game, and by extension good for us.

If it's investors from within the games industry, then obviously the concern to know details would be much bigger...

I'm not sure to be honest, we'll see as the news gets filtered out.

I'm probably way out (and I don't think the timescales match) but my thoughts of the outside investor went to either Microsoft or Sony with their new consoles, they will be looking for something to show them off - and I did read something the other day about Planetside 2 being released Playstation 4 along with a comment about big seamless interconnected worlds.

Big seamless interconnected has become a standard genre on the PC, but this is the first time I've heard of it going into the console space. That's interesting.

Aside from that, as much I enjoy the DB updates and newsletters for any snippets of information, I can't help but think that personally, I want to see DB talk about a single subject in more depth, like this:

http://www.youtube.com./watch?v=5uKD1ap5hsI

Rather than just a few words about a lot of things.

I'd be quite interested actually to get video follow-ups from DB and the lead designers on DDF topics. Video and artwork helps but isn't necessary IMO.

I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. There are some smart folks on this board and I ain't one of them.......

"Centrifugal" and "centripetal force" are commonly mixed up. This one isn't so much about being smart to understand it, more those in the know like to pick up on those that get it wrong. Like racialist and racist.

(More smart-aaahsed than smart ;))

Just as long as these investors don't have initials like umm, Activision or Electronic Arts, I'm good with it. Dealing with the Devil is why a lot of good studios are no longer with us..

Oh, I get it. Elitist behaviour!

Big investors are only likely to invest in something their impressed with and know its a sure thing .....

Can only mean good things :)

How are people gonna enter the rotating section?

I wonder how are the people safely gonna enter that rotating section from the main hull of the Imperial Cruiser if the thing keeps rotating, also how is it attached, with magnetic bearings I assume?

Maybe some kind of box that gets 'caught' by the outer rim at an entry point. It could have dampeners to make the catching sequence smooth for the passengers inside. The box itself would be like an airlock. Once it's in place, a hatch on the outer rim would open and a platform inside the box could lift the people/goods up into the ring section.

A horizontal 'elevator'. You enter it, doors close and it starts accelerating. At some point it matches rotation with the rotating section, doors on the opposite side open and you exit. The doors arent on opposite sides though, one of them would have to be on the 'floor'.

Not necessarily, this is a matter of perspective, as the will be no 'floor' in the rest of the ship as it will be in zero-G.

It's a great idea, like a train that runs around the outer rim of the wheel section, at stop it is stationary relative to the ring section, at the speed of rotation (in the appropriate direction) it is stationary to the main hull.

I was thinking exactly this except the in and out doors would be on opposite sides (why would one door be in the floor?)
