PS4 Controller Speaker

Wasn’t sure wether to put this in here or the suggestions section but it can be moved if necessary.

One of the unique features of the PS4 is that we have a speaker on the controller. Should our ship computer voice and other comms such as station docking use our controller speaker rather than just coming through the TV for more “immersion”? Or at least have the option to use it?

Good idea, would definitely increase the immersion! +1

There is a suggestion thread somewhere in the forum, probably a good place to post this.

Rep+ for this. The only game I've seen this speaker being used is GTAV. Would love to see it implemented in ED.

Its a great idea, it was mentioned before but unfortunately its another one of those features which FDev have not embraced on PS4. Lloyd? :)

GTAV isn't the only game to make use of the Dualshock 4's speaker, Resogun, the two full PS4 Tomb Raider games, F1 2016, and several more i can't think of right now also do, but like many of the pads and systems' other unique features, it's certainly under used ...

While indeed, i'd certainly like to get the option to hear ships' computer and possibly other comms through the DS4's speaker, in this game :) .

(It reminds me how, similarly, even going back to the PS2 it could take voice commands and play comms audio with/through a compatible USB headset, such as the one which came with the Socom games and similarly how the PS3 and PS4 can do the same with Bluetooth headsets/earpieces, but again the feature was/is under used :) .)

Great idea and it would be great for immersion, like you said. But it need to be so that you can turn it off too. It's not nice when you're trying play in the middle of the night and your GF/Wifey wakes up because of that :D it has happen to me, i just can't remember which game it was but e.g. weapon loading sounds came throughout that speaker. Luckily it could be switched on or off.

You can adjust the speaker' audio level independently of all other system audio levels, while also setting the system to automatically divert all audio to headphones only when you plug a set into the DS4 (the divert audio option likely also works when compatible Bluetooth headsets are connected too, though i can't confirm the latter for certain) :) .

Something more games should do as well as using the touch pad for more than just being a click button. In case of ED, I wouldn't mind, but since I fly with HOTAS, it's a feature I won't use.

ED does, it uses the touchpad like a mobile phone screen for pinch and swipe in the galaxy map. ED does make very good use of the DS4 generally, the head look is awesome. I was surprised they never implemented the speaker.

This was mentioned before as a few of us remember (or think we remember) station comms or radio chatter used to come through that speaker when the game first launched?

It seems years ago now lol ;)

Ah, I did do a quick search but couldn’t see anything.

Yeh, the search function on here is notoriously bad.

I know it sometimes feels like it, but it was not even a year yet LOL! I did remember correctly that it was asked about then and I am not going mad.

I was thinking of updating the original FAQ sticky I made with PS4 most wanted suggestions. I might just do that when I get around to it as I know others have asked for such a thread.

It’s also used on The Division. It’s works really well with radio comms.

I’m surprised this hasn’t been implemented into the game.

I would definitely want this to be optional. I personally prefer my very nice "home theater" speakers over the tiny, tinny DS4 speaker. IIRC, the original reason for that speaker in the DS4 was for player voice comms.

in my experience having dialog prompts, warnings and such from a different audio source/speaker then 'main' audio can help make it easier to notice.

Generally the controllers' speaker is used for secondary audio, like in game comms, phone calls, audio logs, specific warnings chimes etc, which was likely always its' main intention.

Normally when someone wants to speak to other players they use a headset or even the single bud headphone and mic which came with the system (even as cheap as it looks and feels, it does work, though Bluetooth headsets/earpieces are generally better), though for when you don't want to connect a mic and wear a earbud/headset (or just don't feel like talking, but still want to hear other people talk) most multiplayer games, such as Battlefield games, Rainbow Six etc, play player audio though the main speakers.

For example, the PS4 version of GTAV, as mentioned, plays phone calls through the controller speaker by default, but it still plays all other sounds, including player audio if a mic isn't connected and in vehicle radio through the main speakers - really the speaker is normally used for more incidental/atmospheric sounds, in most games, rather than any other types of audio present :) .

(Also off topic, but in reference to your signature - Tea in Elite's time, sells for more than aluminium and explosives, probably because it can only but grown on Earth for some reason and has to be shipped all over the Galaxy... :) .)

From my understanding though I don't utilize it, except for the ear phone where as I use ear buds, one must plug in their hotas if they use one first and foremost, and then start the game, making it the main controler, once done, one can then plug in the DS4 and use ONLY the finger pad and the earphone jack. Moving any of the buttons or joysticks, cause the hotas issues and one will have to reasigned any various buttons they reconfigured for the hotas.

Perhaps the prevalent nature of stereo headset users in modern gaming, has caused Frontier to not bother, as in their opinion, it wouldn't be widely used?

Nobody I know on Xbox uses their TV speakers. All of them are running a stereo headset.

I imagine the numbers are similar on PS4.
