PS4/PS4 Pro info?

It almost makes you wonder if Microsoft is still sliding money under the table to Frontier. "We know the exclusive is over, but here's some $$$ if you keep your mouths shut about the PS4. Just keep talking about XBox, okay?"

Yeh, its just not cool. FDev are talking to the press, just not about PS4. :(

It takes the biscuit to be honest. This game is launching in two weeks right? I didn't dream that?

Seconded, would be nice to see some actual gameplay from Open play (or even Solo) rather than the 2 videos I have seen on training videos. How is the planetary surface landing on the PS4 as this seems to a moan I hear from Xbox that planetary quality is not the best?

Is the game using target rates for FPS on the console? Is it unlocked with a target, or restricted to a set frame rate?

From the FAQ:

Will Elite Dangerous for PS4™ work on PS4™Pro?
Yes, we plan on supporting the PS4™Pro with Elite Dangerous

Any technical details yet?

Will full 4K be supported for Elite Dangerous on the PS4™Pro?
Elite Dangerous will feature enhanced performance on PS4™Pro. We’ll have more to information about this closer to release.

Any news on this? Will you be supporting a 4k mode? Will there be supersampling to 1080p with the PS4 Pro? So basically will it be selectable, 4k mode or performance 1080p mode with supersampling?

Seph, how do we encourage Digital Foundry to do a graphics analysis? :) (once it is released)

Thanks.

In an effort to get back on-topic, I'll chime in with some thoughts here from a space game performance perspective, in this case No Man's Sky. But before I get to the tech bits, a word about sci-fi genres: NMS is space opera, and ED is hard sci-fi. While NMS is centered around minimal-though-melodramatic narrative ideas, ED is centered around scientific accuracy. I mention this because these differences will likely lead to performance differences in each game universe. On PS4 Pro, NMS runs in 1800p (or 3200×1800 - around 4 times as many pixels as a 1600x900 HD display). The frame rate, especially on planetary surfaces (either on foot or in vehicles), runs at a solid 30fps and can go as high as 40-45ish FPS depending on the levels of flora and fauna. On a barren, desolate, empty planet surface, however, you'll see a rock solid 60fps in No Man's Sky. The same frame rate is usually present in all NMS space environments, either in combat surrouned by dozens of fighters, freighters, capital ships and even the system's space station, or just while transiting around a system for exploratory planetfall. In NMS, planetary textures are extremely gorgeous, very high resolution. I expect the same of ED.

I know the stylistic differences between the two may not equate directly with a difference in performance. That said, ED's stylistic approach could be called minimalist compared to No Man's Sky's. While stark, ED is beautifully stark, and rich with accurate, real-world detail. I expect a similar resolution (1800p) and my gut tells me it might even be true 4K. I also expect a really high frame rate, both in deep space and on planetary surfaces, which are far simpler than even No Man's Sky's most barren worlds (in NMS the game is still keeping track of a planet's internal cave systems which are vast, sprawling and intense, even if the surface geometry is fairly simple).

All you need to do is Tweet to Digital Foundry about ED, and they'll get it in the queue. In fact, they've spent a lot of time doing NMS analysis, so I can't imagine them not doing an ED analysis. Again, give'em a Tweet. Or post a request on whatever their latest YouTube video is.

Also, as a general observation, I'm new here, but what's with the merciless topic drift in this forum?

You call THIS topic drift? Oh, are you in for a treat then ;)

He's new. TBH the topic drift on this thread wasn't the worst. My poke with the Xbox One X 4k on Elite Dangerous revelation is the fact FDev seem to refuse to talk PS4. It's on topic imo.

Jupiter's point about tweeting Digital Foundry is a good one though. So going to do that.

What you talking 'bout.

We PS4 owner operators were doing fine until the pc and xbox converts stepped in. Bragging about what they can and have done on their platforms. This is supposed to be for us, not them, they have their own area to sound off, but insist on comming here like you did and gloating about their adventures. Were all nice except for...they no who they are, I mean they've put up with me now for a couple of weeks. Even though I drift a little sometime. LOL

Well, E3 for FDev is over, and not one mention of the PS4. They made a big deal about the Xbox One X, which isn't out until November.. I'm beginning to inherit some of Stormy's frustration!

I hate to drop a bomb, but the term "Postponed" is in my vocabulary, I'm just sayin.

Yeh, I have been here since December (which is nothing for some of the PC/Xbox guys but in the PS4 cycle since the upbeat trailer its been quite flat), so a little jaded now with the scraps we have been thrown, still just need to hang in for 2 more weeks. :)

I think I'm more upset that FDev is shooting themselves in both bare feet with a level 4 OC rail gun. I can live without specs, but come on marketing team, MARKET your product! It's like they don't want to sell copies of ED on the Playstation platform.

What you talking 'bout.

I think what I'm talking about is how every thread seems to be derailed by becoming a personal conversation/snarky-banter-sequence between a set of "regulars" who've been here for a seemingly long time. I'm just here as a PS4 Pro guy, who's been waiting to jump back into Elite since the mid-90s when I last played. It feels like I'm a vouyeur at times. I'm saying to myself "Wait, which thread did I click on? Oh, I guess it was the right one. Hmmm."

We PS4 owner operators were doing fine until the pc and xbox converts stepped in.

I noticed that too. I'm trying to read PS4-realted threads, and it's all vile rage and hatred and outright entitlement issues re: FDEV. They seemingly lack all critical perspective, and by that I mean, PS4 players don't even have Elite: Dangerous yet. And yet all I see are these bizarre temper tantrums that, lacking context, seem really really off-topic.

I mean, just coming in, fresh off the passenger transport, it seems like there's a lot of, um, anger about (again, I don't have the context - I don't know what FDEV did to players to cause them to turn into raging lunatics). I'm actually telling people over at GameFAQs to head over here to avoid the <censored>-storm of idiocy that often erupts on GameFAQs with every video game release (these little communities form, comprised of excited people eager to play; they talk and theorize for a few months, get to be friends, and then the game releases, and on Day 1, the pleasant little forum is suddenly overloaded with new players filled with rage or hatred). But anyway, now I'm starting to regret urging the GameFAQs PS4 ED community over this way. It certainly hasn't been pleasant for me trying to wade through all the entitlement and anger I see around here. :(

You came on a bad day :) it's normally alot more chilled but it's two weeks before launch and we haven't even seen the actual game running yet despite the dev promising more info before launch so everyone is slightly aggrieved ;)

It'll go back to normal soon :)

Yeh I would second this, its been a particularly rough day for PS4 peeps today. :)

I wasn't angry until today. I've given more [heart]s to FDev than anyone, but today I'm a bit grrrrr. When I'm happy, sometimes I ride a horse without my shirt, so I suppose that's a bit off-topic.

So if I bother you, feel free to ignore me. There's actually an option called "Ignore user." I won't be offended. Or you might want to stick around and get to know us all better. Your call :)

ps - you definitely want to steer clear of Dangerous Discussions if you think the PS4 forum is "angry"
