PvE Groups; are they just a fad?

Playing cooperatively against the environment. Obviously FD never considered this a true contender to Open mode and Solo mode, or they would have incorporated management tools.

One of the many PvE private groups has now climbed above 36.500 commanders. I was just wondering if FD still considers PvE groups a fad?

Do you?

Edit for clarity: If a moderator would change the title to:

PvE groups; are they just a fad?

That would be dandy. :)

2. Edit: Thanks mods. What a lovely bunch they are. :)

I...I don't understand the question.

If it 'aint (too) broke, don't fix it.

Mobius is doing a reasonable enough job for PvE players... for now so catering to the PvE crowd isn't a priority for Frontier right now.

At least that's what I believe.

I say nuke it from orbit... its the only way to be sure ;)

Agreed.

Everyone already knows that Solo/Pvt Groups are for little gurls! Not officially of course but .. there it is. :p :D arf.

btw. I play pretty much PvE in Open, and will continue to stay reasonably out of harms way (backwater system wise) until get a decent computer, so I don't rubber band in other ppl's game, and to give ardent PvPers a chance to get good first.

:D Excellent gif.

Do, you, consider, PvE groups, a, fad (a passing trend)? Not being condescending btw., just trying to be funny. I usually fail.

No, I consider them a necessity. A PvP-Only Elite Dangerous would not have received me as a customer; this applies to all games ( I bought Battlefield 4 for the campaign, I'm not joking... :p )

If Open is indeed hemorrhaging players at a rate steep enough to prompt FD to issue pleas that people come back, and those pleas go unanswered, then there may come a point when FD realises that a PvE mode makes more good business sense than it already does. Such a move may require a certain amount of pride swallowing, so one shouldn't hold one's breath.

:S

Elite: Dangerous, from day one of the Kickstarter, advertised "playing with friends" as a feature, and private groups as one way to do this. The size of your circle of friends is immaterial.

They succeeded at this task quite well.

Frontier Developments in general, and David Braben in particular, also said from the beginning that PvP in this game was intended to be, "Rare but meaningful."

They got the rare part correct, for a given definition of PvP. I'm still waiting for the meaningful part.

Is an official open PvE mode ever going to be implemented? I doubt it. This would require Frontier to disable the possibility of friendly fire, and I doubt that will happen. They may be ignoring the spirit of Elite recently, but I doubt they'd violate it that much.

Personally, I'm still waiting for Ironman mode. If Frontier is going to make a group with special rules, as opposed to simpler match making rules, I'd rather they go with that, than open PvE mode. There already exists tools for the latter in the game, but for the former, the tools are sorely lacking. If I want to play proper ironman, right now I'd have to go solo. I have no problem being genuinely killed in ironman mode by a player, but I expect them to be playing by the same rules I am.

But if an ever growing part of the playerbase is moving to makeshift PvE groups for cooperative PvE gameplay, would you revisit your initial thoughts on the matter, or ignore it?

Just where does this statistic of an "ever growing part of the playerbase is moving" come from..? This comment I have heard repeated since I first came to the boards, if it were ever true Open would be devoid of players 18 months ago..

You'd revisit but not in a knee jerk response I'd suggest. I think the other philosphy Frontier are also having to (and do) hold true to, is 'play your way'. Ideally that would be in open but the legal versus illegal careers balance needs a light touch. So I'd suggest you prefer people (let's say hopefully temporarily) move to solo, than find there's no way to be a trader or no way to be pirate in the game, because losing either one is not allowing one side or the other to play their way.

...My understanding from many CMDRs is that there's next to no "co-operation", just the mentality of a safe zone.

As with all things, this is of course a subjective opinion. If you're out exploring on your own, you're not cooperating with anyone directly. Which also makes the "I only play in Open mode, oh and I'm out exploring light years from the bubble" equally silly. What's the point? There is no point.
