I think they may want to rename the game to Elite : Dangerous / Safe Mode / Safe Mode #2

This game has three modes, Open, closed and private - that's three possible ways of doing it. Pick the one you like and let others do the same?

It's Elite. You can be combat capable pretty quickly. I have no problem getting ready in private games, just come out and play once you're ready!
I've played nothing but open since alpha and have never been interdicted or attacked by a player. Not once!

My life is great i have a great woman a great job that pays decent in my area, suppers cooked every night and breakfast in the moring, a credit card with infinit funds "almost" life is great.
But Still They may need to rename the game.

This thread is extremely worrying. This is the worst example of a chaos-frenzy of utterly desperate shills and zealots yet - and I don't imagine there are many zealots left, frankly.
Braben & co please sort this game out FAST. It's going to die quickly otherwise. Insulting your customers with highly irritating shills has never accomplished anything but a more speedy demise.
This is so sad. I really want this game to succeed. Maybe there's still hope if you get your asses in gear.

It's simply poor game design when online multiplayer mode segregates the player base like in ED.
Instead, FD should have come up with other means to prevent anti-social behavior, e.g., a penalty system that is more effectively enforced by the NPC police of the related factions.
On another note: where do all those troll replies come from? Are all the mods still on holidays?

Unfortunately both sides have a tendency to do this...it's probably just frustration. The folks calling other "cowards" for having a different game play style and other calling PVP folks all "greifers"...
There are 3 modes Private Groups, Solo, and Open for a reason. They all interact with the same environment but allows the different styles to all play in the sandbox that is the environment at the same time.
I am, i mean ill happily let the pvp come to me if it can find me, I'm truly interested if there will eventually be anyone in open or will the game segregate itself entirely into private groups or what. will it ever pick a dominant mode. its interesting to know.
I think they should remove player PVP from open mode and stop this silly argument altogether. This is basically the flip side of what you PVP players are asking for so why should Fdev not just listen to PVE players instead and cut you folks out? This was never meant to be a hardcore PVP game it just got tagged on with the online bit so they may as well remove the redundant mechanic.

OP if there was only open then the people who only want a single player experience would not play the game. You can't force people to play in Open, but the developers can encourage players to use Open.

I agree, but people need persuading of that. I happily play in open without too much worry (the most I've got from players other than a couple I know is a brief "Hi") but others need to see that. Then perhaps they'll be more willing to play in Open - far too many PvPers talk down rather than encourage, when encouragement will end up netting them a richer PvP experience.
Well to be fair, playing in private games out of fear of others is cowardice. Also, Elite is not a sandbox. You can't build anything. That's pretty much the basic idea behind the term. I mean, what do you do in a sandbox? You build.

Frontier and Elite have been around for 30 years, its not going anywhere, its in no danger of dying. Have no fear.
If the game had enough players that wanted pew pew pixel domination mechanics then you guys wouldnt be here complaining about a lack of nubs to pwnz0r. You guys will go back to your shooters in a week, and other than the forums being a friendlier place nobody will notice or care.

The only desperation here does seem to be from those desperate for people to kill in Open. All others seem quite content with the options available to them - including those playing in Open and not desperately needing to pew pew incessantly to give the game any form of meaning for them.
