PvE pulse lasers: What mod should I pick?

I'm not building a particularly offensive ship; my Cobra is undergoing optimisation as a fast trade ship.

Still, doesn't hurt to have a little power against NPC ships.

What would you choose? These are my medium mounts on my Cobra, BTW.

I'd go with sturdy, just because the armour piercing is so low without it. Then on anything that doesn't have scramble spectrum or emissive I'd put thew new oversized experimental on 'em. As you say it doesn't hurt to have a little power, and it's something I find lacking in my all Burst builds. :)

Focused every time. Makes smaller lasers hit bigger ships harder, extends the range (and removes the falloff I think), what's not to love.

I'd probably go (edit) oversized for special, as above.

In my purely PvE game, I use Efficient w/ Phasing Sequence, and Scramble Spectrum. I put Phasing on the more powerful lasers, and Scramble on the lesser.

I usually put focused on my pulse lasers. Not only increases maximum range but also the falloff to around one kilometer, which is well inside common combat range, thus more damage applied

Your lasers are going to be part of an overall build concept. That will help you decide what mods to use. For example, one application of small long range lasers with thermal is to bring down shields. You could then follow up with med or large MCs to tear down the hull. That would be for PVE res zone farming. If you're planning to do assassinations and are still tied to lasers, think about tossing in a scramble spectrum special. Lasers have a punishing damage drop off unless you get the long range or focus fire mod. Efficients look attractive, but are truly only efficient if you're sitting within 600 m regularly. For most starter pilots, you'll be doing a lot of jousting (not necessarily a good thing - but everyone starts that way). You may find that LR gives you a bit more sustained damage as a result. If you have a big ship and are doing mindless easy mode res farming, LR turrets turn the exercise into a pleasure cruise. GLHF

I think long range is best for DPS, to mitigate the severe damage drop off at distance.
But rapid fire is my personal favorite. They just look and sound cool. :)

I decided to go for focused in the end. Nothing stopping me re-engineering in the future.

Not with my engine focused distro' they're not!

Oh. In that case I think efficient might be your only option, as it might not be able to keep up with your recharge rate. Personally I like the scramble spectrum special on one of the smalls as well, mainly for the hilarity of watching the NPCs flail about after an engine malfunction when you pop their shields. :p Though there also the chance that their cargo hatch malfunctions as well...

Oh aye? I'll test things out. :)

Focussed - range increase which helps reduce fall off damage, this is especially useful for lasers. Also, the armour piercing means their damage to hull is less affected by hull hardness.

Edit: I see you made the right choice!
