PvP and Open Play Should be Required to Unlock Engineers!

Players need to be exposed to all facets of the game. That's what people tell me, when I complain about unlock requirements...

If I'm required to go exploring to unlock Professor Palin & required to go mining to unlock Selene Jean, despite the fact that I have no interest in these activities, why shouldn't solo traders be required to play in open for 20 hours and win 5 PvP matches to unlock Felicity Farseer?

Fair is fair and everyone needs to broaden their horizons, no?
:)

you having no interest in doing the activity requiered to say make an engineer available is quite irrelevant. that's how it is.
Hopefully FD will tweak the engineers and their related activities come whenever they decide to follow up on their initiative last year

Other players are optional in Elite

No.

PvP is just combat with a differently programmed opponent not a different activity. Besides you don't have to gain any exploration rank to unlock Palin you just need to travel that far then blow up your ship and data, Palin unlocked no exploration done so you are fine.

No, actually I appreciate it now! I'm so happy to be forced into these activities... I mean, I still don't like them, but how would I know that if I wasn't forced to do them for hours and hours?

Now I KNOW I don't like them! :)

How can all those solo players BE SURE they don't like open IF THEY AREN'T FORCED TO TRY IT?

Seriously.

Not really. I'm required to spend time doing an activity I don't want to do. Blowing myself up doesn't change that. It just compounds the wasted time by making it even more wasteful.

The important thing is forcing player into activities they would never do otherwise.

Glad I could clear that up for you!

Precisely this 👆
You dont need to explore anything.
Just get a dbx, lighten it up, put a techbroker 5A FSD V1 on it and a guardian fsd booster and you have a ship that can do 5000ly in 25 minutes using the neutron highway, a ship that you can actually lose it since it has virtually no engineering except for the purchased fsdv1

win 5 PvP matches

There is not a single objective in the game that requires you to kill another player.
Except CQC, nothing in game acknowledges another human player as an opponent in Elite.
Merely as a coop player by the limited scope provided by the wing missions and team invitations.

So win 5 pvp matchs makes absolutely no sense outside CQC.

So is engineering. Is that not so?

No one is making anybody do either...

Precisely.

I think that the engineer in question ought to have something to do with the activity.

I've mentioned elsewhere how adding "careers" to gameplay could more strongly define activities within the game e.g. a pirate, terrorist, blockade runner, smuggler. This could include engineer access to improve modules to make that activity "easier"

Ofc there would need be some sort of balance between cops & robbers which would need almost a complete overhaul of the game, taking it in a different direction that not all players would see as positive.

So overall, very unlikely.

See, it's not about the actual activity, it can be anything. The important part is that it MUST BE something, ANYTHING, that you don't want to do, placed between the player and their preferred activity.

That's what's important.

It would promote misery and misery builds character.

Quite apart from all the usual issues with forced Open... all other Engineer unlocks are basically simple to achieve, if somewhat time-consuming (in some cases). Go the distance, mine the stuff, shoot up some easy opponents and gather the bonds, etc.

"Win 5 PvP matches" - in a ship you haven't engineered yet - isn't. Unless you shoot up one of your own unresisting alts, or another player volunteers to get blown up 5 times, in which case it then becomes ridiculously easy.
