Python - how do you fly yours?

Seriously. Just upgrraded to the python from a Fedassault. (wanted to go gunship but not quite ensigne yet) Does it get better? The turning is HORRID and right now im in complete turrets just so i can hit stuff. I personally dont like turrrrets ... i like a mix of fixed and gimbled. Once i upgrade my thrusters im hoping that ill be able to track ships slighly better. Though i might ask how others felt about it.

GO!

i use turrets on all of mine, and don't really have much trouble with them (DD5 on thrusters, Efficient on 3x C3 pulses and 2x C2 beams) - 4 to Sys and 2 to Wep

combat against NPCs is usually just a case of keeping your upper decking as square on to the enemy as possible to give your turrets the best possible field of fire, and thrusting (usually downward for the previous reason stated) to avoid the joust'n'ram tactic that NPCs love to use. going against elite 'condas etc. sometimes requires an SCB round or two - which is a pain sometimes because mission attackers are usually sent in fours, i.e. kill one, run from the other three...

i'd never fly one in PvP though, my Pythons are all armed traders, not combat ships

you'll notice a significant improvement with DD5 thrusters though, it's a very worthwhile upgrade.

The Python responds well to DD, as stated, can be twitchy w/ 5's

I've got 4 gimballed MC's and a fixed plasma. With HICAP magazines on the MC's w/ effects, it is quite deadly, the plasma for when you're close.

It can be hull-tanked quite high but weak shields are a detriment.

Engineer...you need G5 Dirty Drives thrusters on Python...then it flies like this (i keep no pips in engine in this video, just sys and wep)

* Upgrade the thrusters to grade three at least, try for a 120+ roll until you can unlock Palin.
* Consider a pair of large turreted lasers to keep the enemy shields down. Can’t turn? At least you’re still hitting them.
* Stay in the throttle blue zone, as much as possible. The python is a frigate, not a space fighter. It takes forever to speed up and slow down.
* Python IS the broad side of a barn. You’ll need some really resilient shields, resists, boosters, and SCB. Armor is a must.

SCB armor is?

Also thanks all for the quick and, surprisingly genuine, answers/help

Actually, I don't.

I'm much happier flying my AspX. I haven't flown my Python in over a year. I don't need cash (and the Python has been heavily engineered) so I have resisted the urge to sell it.

First, it depends on which Python - I own three.

One is a pure combat python, with gimbals - 2 beams, 3 MC's, G3 Dirty Drives and a whole lot of armor. I fly it like a battle axe - right into whatever I'm shooting at, it's a beautiful thing.

My second is a mining Python. Again G3 Dirty drives, but it really doesn't have to do much except park next to a rock and blast.

My third is a freighter, once more G3 dirty drives, 3 gimbals, 2 turrets, and 200 tons of cargo space. I've taken quite a few NPC anacondas completely apart with it.

And all three, I use D-grade thusters to keep it light.

Finally, I use Flight-Assist Off for sharp turns and trick maneuvers. It's really a glorious thing.

We’re not all jerks here. This is what I run: https://coriolis.io/outfit/python?c...18eQ==.Aw18eQ==..EweloBhBGKoUwIYHMA28QwtoA===

Shield cell banks, you tie it to a hotkey and hit it when your shields are under pressure.
They cause a ton of heat, you need to use a heat sink. You should be able to time a SCB-SINK-SCB and get two for one, and fill shields from almost gone to full.

Armor, pick up some military composites at least with some armor/module reinforcements. Shields go down, insurance is like 10 million, and you’ll live to see another day.

G5 DDs. Shields that are now north of 1,000. One large g/beam, everything else g/mc with effects (mostly corrosive).

A Python will never be exactly ‘nimble’ (it’s a medium freighter after all) but it can be improved vastly from its stock build.

Oh, and I forgot: *gruff handshake* Welcome to the club.

I flew mine in between rocks and and back to the station till I got what I needed for an anaconda then sold it

I sold mine for an Annie, then rebought the python.

Sometimes you need to be able to land on medium pads. Missions. Cargo. Bounty turn ins. Exploration data. Moving a BGS needle in a system without a large pad. Picking up a new module or engineering a weapon. Doing something quickly somewhere that needs doing. The python does it in style.

Kinda this ^.
I much prefer my Conda and T9 but sometimes you just have to get on medium pads. And the Python is the current King of medium pads.
And another throwout plea to put the T7 on medium pads...

The Python does have notably poor pitch performance. You'll want to make use of roll+yaw in addition to pitch when turning for maximum possible rate. Spending a lot of your time in Reverse may also be advisable, as is clever use of your lateral thrusters.

I personally, at first, went with two large turrets, two fixed mediums, and a gimballed large under the nose, with my first Python loadout.

Currently, I have two fixed beams and three large gimballed multicannons, but it's also got DD5 thrusters now. (And I still sometimes have issue aiming those beams, so...YMMV.)

But the shields on the Python are pretty good, the hardpoint layout is fantastic, and there's no ship that can do everything the Python can do - the one thing it lacks is a fighter bay.

With reckless abandon.

But seriously, with G3 DDs and gimbaled weapons. I have no trouble at all hitting NPCs in my Python - it used to be my main bounty hunting ship before I got my FAS, and it always performed very well in that role. Upgrade them drives and you can ditch them turrets.

I have pretty much this set up but with much weaker shields. But I'm using it as a combat trader/passenger transport. I found out pretty quick yesterday I have no business taking it into a CZ. Even against a bunch of NPCs I lost the shields within a minute or so.

FAS is a better killer than a Python but now you have it use it for the missions to get the FGS. (I prefer the FAS to the FGS too but I am weird, my favourite killer is my Vulture).

Python is great but even with g5 dd...it isn't nimble.
