QoL Request: Free Type Text on ships, modules, friends

I'm going to give this request a little "nudge" again.

Having logged into the game over the weekend, and moved some Modules around, having some user defined notes against them, which you can quickly/easily seen from the associated list screens (as well as being able to update them), would make things so much more civilised!

It's important these notes should be displayed on lists along side each module/ship/friend/location etc, even if it's only the first 15 chars or so, with the rest then only visible if you explode/view/edit them.

I've asked for this a couple of times... But here we go again.

It would be useful to have some free type text in a good number of areas in ED just to help us organise our thoughts...

Against ships: What's the current state of play with ship X? What's it for? Is it my exploration ship? Have I swapped out a module to use it for something else and want to remind myself?

Against modules: (Stored or in ship) Which of these X similar modules has what crafting? What's it aimed at, exploration? Piracy? A single sentence would help me pick it out. Be nice to see these easily on the list of stored modules for example. ie: Which is the one I modified in so-and-so way?

Against friends: Who is CMDR X? Oh yes, he's the one who helped me out with Y. Good chap! Now I remember!

Against CMDRs: Allow notes against a CMDR. For example on the contact pane you can view any notes you have on a CMDR, and have an option to "Amend" them. So if you see a CMDR on your scanner/contacts you can see if you've got notes on them (eg: "Helped me with X", or "Shot me for no reason!")

Against elsewhere? eg: Planets/stations etc? Bookmarks?

ps: I'm sure this could all be held client side, and therefore could be used/maintained by third party apps too?

Yeah I'm all for this. I have to keep a notepad by the computer for Commander names and notes. I've also taken to naming bookmarks things to help me remember what they are for, but that's not necessarily the same as the best name to have them listed under. While neither of these things are game-breaking at all, and I do quite like having it a bit old school with paper notes for things, it would be much more convenient to have them in-game.

Can you imagine third party apps making use of this feature? So they could use/display the text against systems, modules and ships etc?

Heck, they could even store their own meta tags (in chevrons or square brackets etc) in the free type text if they wished, to store their own data for their own use.

As far as I have understood this kind of 3rd party app could be done where you import your journal file after each gaming session. By parsing the journal file you could update the database containing your ships and the containing modules as well as stored modules.

Inara.cz utilizes some of the journal entries to track down your materials and credits as well as locations and ship buys. Modules has to be updated manually per ship and no notes can be entered per module. Ships have free form notes.

According to journal file format it could be used to update all your ships info to 3rd party tool. There is actions like ModuleStore, ModuleSell etc. so you could track everything. Given that the description in below link is correct.

Edit: Interesting information in http://edcodex.info/?m=tools as there is some tools that fetches this information from Frontier's servers. Apprently there is some API that could be used to get actual data even when you are not logged in to game. There seems to be a paid app that could track pretty much everything.

I wonder how many CMDRs would appreciated notes right now against their modules? (Ready for the impending G1->G4 grind)

MODULENOTES
3A FSD"Grade 5 single rolled"
4A FSD"Grade 5 single rolled"
5A FSD"Grade 5 single rolled"
6A FSD"Grade 5 single rolled"
7A FSD"Grade 5 single rolled"
8A FSD"Grade 5 single rolled"
3A Thrusters"Grade 5 single rolled"
5A Thrusters"Grade 5 single rolled"
6A Thrusters"Grade 5 single rolled"
7A Thrusters"Grade 5 single rolled"
8A Thrusters"Grade 5 single rolled"
etc...etc...

Having just recalled all my ships to Jameson Memorial for a module audit, I agree. Gathered mats to single roll 10 G5 FSDs this morning. Thrusters next.

I've suggested something similar several times, myself.

For me, it'd be great to be able to "label" modules so I know where they came from.

On my Cutter, for example, I've got one set of modules fitted to ferry it to an AO and then a different bunch of modules go in once I get there.
It'd be nice if I could label the cargo racks, fuel-scoop and ADS etc, so I know they're for something specific and don't sell them when I have a clear-out.

Similar thing with my T9. It gets used for cargo and mining.
If I could label the modules I'd know the stored ones came off my T9 and weren't just some random junk I've left lying around.

It's something that'd be so useful that it's more a case of "why not?" than "why?".

Indeed, simply some help in tagging modules and weapons as for "Piracy", and for what ship layouts etc is what I'd want it for.

The number of times I've had to struggle to find/remember which modules I want on my Piracy ship, because I've temporarily put them on some other ship or into storage :(

And I'll swear I've sold modules (even Engineered ones) by accident too, where a clear note displayed might have reminded me not to!

It's not so much an in-game notebook we need as an in-game spreadsheet.

And I may get one, if FDev add Dash 2.0 support for the Oculus Rift.

Don't shoot at me, I'm recalculating!

With the new Engineer changes meaning every (new) module has to be engineered up from nothing, I suspect this means more and more modules will me moved/shared between ships. eg: Moving a size 5 FSD from ship X to Y and then back to ship X again as you come to use ships...

Being able to add clear notes to modules to keep track of things will make life really useful.

eg: While using Ship Y, putting some mandatory (temporary cheap) FSD in ship X, "Temporary FSD - SELL!", to remind you what it is!

Yes, this is an excellent idea.

Especially on the friends list... the amount of people I have just... deleted from my friends list, because I have no clue how they are anymore, ins crazy.

I actually have no clue who most of the people in "My faction" are either to be honest, because... just too many names to remember.

Please let us at least have sections for friends list which we can name.

Sure, Squadrons... but aside from squadrons, just sections for friends.

Agreed. A simple .txt that can be saved locally would be enough for me to keep track of so many things. Readable in a cockpit. I'd even be fine if I only could edit it outside of the game like HUD colours but make it readable ingame so I don't have to alt-tab all the time.
Copy pasta so many things from third party tools.

I use a ship's name to sort them out.

In the most recent livestream, Sandro indicated that naming modules is in the works.
