Question about ED player goals

Not really. I want all those things too. My first post on this thread was about the fact that it might enrich a game, esp on a small scale. I got the impression (probably wrongly - for which I apologise) that you were concerned that groups of players might try something a little more agressive en-masse and threaten the balance of the game?

no, if players want to band together to try to own a system or whatever i have no problem with that... talk to me nicely i may even join in. my concern is that that becomes the end goal of the game. must add that i do not think it will be the case.

I have no idea about FD's intent, other than what I have read (and forgotten) on the forum. I was merely being devils advocate in my 2nd post and not intendng to yank your chain. Merely suggesting how easy it would be to control a mass attempt to unbalance a game if FD wished to do so?

ok... i understand what you say. yes... given that it is their game.. fd can do whatever they like to maintain 'balance'. but i think (hope) that in the early stages, at least, fd will allow a certain amount of leeway to see what is possible.

Actually, the more I have thought about it, the more it could be fun as part of a great social experiment and help to satisfy those who want to have a different endgame.
There would be nothing at all to stop there being a great "land grab" (eg American Mid west in 19th Century?) in another spiral arm of 100 million stars, well away from where the game starts. 100 million is still conservatively only 0.1% of the total star number.
Once you get there under your own steam its a blank canvas, and effectively a different game within a game. For those who discussed a preference for a management style game within ED, including the spreadsheets, then away you go, have fun. Go where your ego takes you.
