When exploring I tend to fly out into open space away from all planets, stars etc. Just to ensure nothing will be on top of me when I log back in. Not sure that it's actually necessary but gives me an extra feeling of security.
Just some advice - I would suggest avoiding logging out while in a ring system or asteroid belt, because there have been one or two reports of people spawning inside an asteroid when they log back in, and being instantly destroyed, in some cases repeatedly every time they log in.
If I log in when I am in a station, as soon as I launch the game gives me maximum reverse thrust. I always hit X as soon as the landing platform disengages. Only happens on first login.
It is, however, not safe to "pause" the game as the game doesn't actually pause at all.
When you log out, you're at a point in space. When you log back in, you're still at that point in space. The Universe moves on in real time. It's entirely possible that a body has moved into your space-point (or is spawned there for rings etc).
Just pick an empty space that will stay empty ... there's a few of them around![]()
