Newcomer / Intro Question about logging out

Do I always need to be docked in a station to safely log out of the game? What happens if I log out in Space?
Do to RL influence I can forsee not always making it to a station or dock to be able to log out.

No, you can safely log out anywhere. If that wasn't the case nobody would be able to go out on exploring expeditions. When you log back in you will be more or less where you were.

It is, however, not safe to "pause" the game as the game doesn't actually pause at all.

You can log out in space. When you come back you should be where you left it. That's how us explorers do it :)

If you save and exit or save and main menu, your ship will be perfectly safe. You will reappear at your current location in normal space at 0 speed.
If you just close the window while in combat, or with a heat warning (AFAIK) your ship will stay in game to blow up for 15 seconds, before logging off. Then as a normal exit

Thanks

I had thought it should work that way, but could not find any reference to it anywhere. I've been looking at ALOT of info lately to figure out some basics.

When exploring I tend to fly out into open space away from all planets, stars etc. Just to ensure nothing will be on top of me when I log back in. Not sure that it's actually necessary but gives me an extra feeling of security.

I'm sure it's not necessary... But I do exactly the same :-D

Just some advice - I would suggest avoiding logging out while in a ring system or asteroid belt, because there have been one or two reports of people spawning inside an asteroid when they log back in, and being instantly destroyed, in some cases repeatedly every time they log in.

Now that would really suck!! Right now my plan is to stick with logging out after I dock someplace. After I get my funds built up and can get a ship for exploring, then I'll keep unites advise in mind.
Currently I have upgraded to a hauler and have just started making "rare" runs. I have it striped down to hold 12 tons of cargo.. No shields or wheapons. But I have upgraded my power supply and FSD. So far I have been able to escape any pirates that have intercepted me.
My next goal is to get enough for a cobra.

Good luck with getting your Cobra. Sounds like you're treading a similar path to me. I also used a stripped down Hauler for general trading and rares runs, then got into a Cobra which I've had a couple of weeks. Done some rares in that as well, using my upgraded Sidewinder for a bit of RES action in between, but I stripped the Sidey down last night and used the money for some outfitting on the Cobra, and took it to my local RES. What a blast, so much more fun than in the Sidewinder.

You'll enjoy your Cobra. Would love to hear about it when you get it.

If I log in when I am in a station, as soon as I launch the game gives me maximum reverse thrust. I always hit X as soon as the landing platform disengages. Only happens on first login.

What controller? Some must retain or default to a value that isn't set to zero. Could be something worth reporting.

I haven't paid attention to the menu, but if it's not already changed, the "pause" is supposed to be changed soon to something else to not give that impression (or removed).

Its an old Saitek ST90 joystick. Its fine during normal play - just on first login. As a point of habit now I always press X immediately after release anyway.

When you log out, you're at a point in space. When you log back in, you're still at that point in space. The Universe moves on in real time. It's entirely possible that a body has moved into your space-point (or is spawned there for rings etc).
Just pick an empty space that will stay empty ... there's a few of them around :)

You actually respawn in the same point relative to the major body you are near. So if you exit in orbit around a planet, you will reappear at that same orbit spot. Outside of a relative frame, then all bets are off...I don't know if you happen to reappear as a planet's frame is passing by if you'll get swept up or not. Could be some interesting moments.

The problem with the rings is that they are seeded to appear the same as far as material, density, etc, but not for each rock to be the same. So if you left within the rings, when you pop back in, it's possible that a rock could be generated that shares your space. If you left the game above the ring, then you're likely okay.
