Question: Best way to control your SRV?

I've tried a few different configurations - using mouse and keyboard was terrible.
Using a PS4 controller wasn't bad.
Currently I use the same stick and throttle I use for everything else, and it works great for me.

Speed control is not really an issue - as stated above, the SRV is not a race car, however....

It IS a lot of fun to race like hell across a planet. I'm particularly fond of the small track found at certain alien ruins - the ones shaped like a large volcano cone - you can race around the inside lip with a small group and even bump each other off the edge and it's insane fun.

Yes, I do sometimes find myself doing doughnuts - on purpose or otherwise. I've also gotten adept at reversing throttle in a spin and zooming backwards until it opts to spin around again, and I reverse again and keep right on going (happens mostly when raiding installations for data and a circling ship decides I've caused enough trouble...).

My SRV, Skiddy McSkidface, is somewhat uncontrollable at times (skids, poor speed control) - what's the current recommendation for SRVs? I've seen historic posts recommending Xbox controllers, is this still true, or should I persevere with the HOTAS? And yes, I know I need to GitGud™

You are going to read it here a hundred times: . . . drive slower. Around 14-20 (usually closer to 14) m/sec. seems the sweet spot on speed for me, depending on conditions and even then I occasionally spin out on low-G worlds. No reason to go faster unless in a SRV race. At 14 m/sec. the motor makes a sweet, smooth whine but at 15 m/sec. that secondary whine kicks in. I have my X-56 HOTAS setup to control the SRV mostly mirroring my ship's controls except where the differences between SRV and spacecraft require a change. Another thing to note is that when the SRV's motor noise winds down to a lower pitch as you drive along you are not slowing down! A glance at the speed indicator will confirm this, the reason for the change in SRV motor pitch is unclear but do not get fooled into thinking you are slowing down and then pushing your throttle up to compensate. o7

+1 for Xbox controller. I use Dual Sticks for controlling my ship but this is impossible for SRV. Didn't have much luck with a HOTAS either. Very lazy game design that they've just used the throttle and stick for the buggy.

Spin out central was my complaint when they first came out. My two solutions were first, someone suggested Drive Assist OFF .. this is a definite must. Makes a huge difference. Second, a flight stick with a "Z" axis in the twist grip of the stick. The problem with kybds and I suspect even the kiddie console controllers is that they're digital. Either full on or full off. So throttle, turn left/right is all or nothing so you're forced with "manually pulsing it" to get an approximate presentation of a analog input.
The Z-axis of a joystick is usually an analog input and you can turn it a little or a lot. Same with the throttle. So I can slide the throttle up a tad and steer precisely where I want to go. Heck, after a few minutes and an area with no/few rocks I could drift as good as Dominic Toretto.
And as far as the turret, I continued to use the mouse for that. And for some reason, I either adjusted something in controls that made that way more controllable or the drive assist off did, which doesn't make sense.

How do you get on aiming the turret on the SRV?

I find it ridiculously over sensitive and hard to track a moving object, it really needs some sort of exponential curve to soften the response around midstick.
well i used to press left stick button to go into the turret but the turret auto aims if you just stay in the driving mode and get the circle over the selected rock
much easier to do it that way. i press X button to target the rock, get it in the circle more or less in the hud, the little aim circle drops down onto the rock and i fire from the driver seat not the turret.

where driving is concerned, drive assist off. also, you can learn how and when to use the speed. to avoid spin outs and damage, and launching into the air , basically if there is a rock, or a hill in your path, slow down right before you hit it and go over it slowly. if its a big rock go around it. dont try and turn fast at speed - in fact try not to turn at speed at all. while checking the radar and turning drive slow. the controller trigger throttle is ideal for this since you can easily select the throttle amount, like accelerator pedal. aiming turret at skimmers is something i cant help with since i only shot one down and a federal navy ship started shooting at me from above - even though im chief petty officer and the federal system and the skimmer was wanted by a federal faction!

HOTAS Throttle : throttle
HOTAS Joystick : steering(and roll when in air)
Mouse : Control Turret movements

For example, I set throttle, then go in Turret view. I control turret with left hand and steering with right hand

+1 for wired Xbox 360 Controller. It works great for driving the SRV. For the ship I have always used HOTAS.

One issue I have had for quite a while, is the switching between ship and SRV and back requires constant menu visits to adjust the pop up of the side windows of the UI. On the ship I have them on so when looking via TrackIR they pop up. On an SRV I don't want that, I want to be able to look left and right without blocking pop up menus. A quick hotkey to turn UI interface elements on or off in the SRV would be great...
