Question for Open players who don't like PVP/ganking... help me understand

All I know is I'm tired of being "ganked" by explorers who sneeringly tag the galaxy like a swarm of graffiti-ists with little to no regard for those of us who are limited to single digit jump ranges. I have zero problems with the idea of striking back against these callous villains.

A new Explorer just back from their first trip and getting Elite and deciding to visit may not know to go into Solo. So any actions atm are not 'for lolz' but can be construed as a direct action against this endeavour and a portion of the community.

I am neither new nor recently Elite, I do have experience and sense......but as Spatula007 says 'Wheres the fun in that?'
I am not sure we can describe any player with Elite rank in anything as a "new player".

We'll have to agree to disagree and put it down to perception or confirmation bias. The game hating you has been a common theme, especially to a new player and its always carried harsh penalties, and its why I love it. Perfect example, a new player with docking computer that sometimes takes longer than 5 minutes to leave a station meaning player has to take control or get blown up, this is deliberate and apparently random. Things have gone wrong as intended. Other games youd be 1st in the queue every time and never even think about it.
Braben's quote in the video talks about how they're bringing all the richness of Elite as it is today forward into the Odyssey expansion, and whatever that will prove to be.

Part of that richness he describes - part of what Braben literally presents as the tradition of Elite - is, in his actual words, when "you make things go wrong for other people."

Granted, the old games were purely solo. But in Elite Dangerous, multiplayer - where you, as a player, can choose (if you want) to "make things go wrong for other people," is one of the game features and it would seem, by extension, that ganking and PVP are the game working as intended.

Sorry guys but I think you're going to have to really stretch credulity to spin that direct statement from Braben, less than 24 hours old, any other way.

Explorers are egotists. Just wait until foot discovery and is going to get crazy with unending footprints on moon X with an Asp somewhere in the background. Its going to choke Reddit like a badly masticated pretzel.

I think Open PVE mode, and putting it main menu's default would solve all these problems. Of course then whining of some player section would be unimaginably intense. As traditional Open would really become consentfull PVP mode and player population there would quite likely take big hit.

i doupt that. many would still go to the normal open also they would still cry in the forums for being ganked

Nobody is trying to 'spin' anything. Wheres the sudden hostility from?
Apologies - no hostility intended in that statement, though it's clearly worded more strongly than my norm.

A different reply from a different respondent seemed to indicate that there was some "slyness" in the statements from Braben, implying that what was clearly and unambiguously said wasn't in fact clear and unambiguous.

There's enough of that kind of doubletalk in real life, I do not want for a minute to brook the same here. But I think the heat of that mindset spilled over into my reply to you, and gave the words more force than I actually intended.

I, for one, have been genuinely enjoying these mostly civil interactions. I do feel like Braben's quote is worth engaging with and accepting for what it is. It doesn't mean that people seeking peaceful co-op are wrong, either. Those things are absolutely part of what Open is and can be about, too. It is intended gameplay. Hell, I do co-op stuff with my ganker friends all the time, lol.

EDIT: typos
