Question: why do we think support will end?

There's no reason to feel anxious in having a conversation with me. If I'm engaged in a conversation I'm not acting in the capacity of a moderator, nor can I do so. I don't want you to feel you have to step on eggshells if you think I'm wrong. Tell me straight, I don't bite.
Oh no no, that's not what I meant. When you're in the loop of development you end up having a broader perspective of it all, but I always afraid of coming of as someone who speaks from a high horse position, which is the opposite of what I want. So I meant it more in general, not directly targetted at you here.

Although when it comes to my assumption that DLC will continue for some time, it appears I am correct:
Oh yeah by all means, I was talking about support in 2024 rather than 2023, as this information was already available. For me this year is likely the last one, with perhaps one or two more packs in 2024 if they follow the PlanCo route, but other than that I don't expect more. I think, especially in combination with big games like Warhammer and more F1 games, Frontier will have their hands full with the new supposed Planet game to then still also fully support PZ.

Which I don't mind at all tbh. The game has had an incredible run so far and I consider this year a nice bonus year.

Absolutely agree with this take. And I'm also of the belief that this will be the final full year of content. I still will hope for another pack or 2 in 2024, but I don't think we'll see more than that, if we see any next year at all.

I have a question y'all, and I'd like y'all's opinions and stuff, but we received the Deluxe DLC when the base game was released, correct? (I wasn't here around that time, so I dunno)

What are y'all's opinions for a Premium DLC? Similar in style to the deluxe, maybe a couple of "clone" animals, WE animals(?), the new soundtrack they released, maybe some new posters/backgrounds, etc.

Would y'all buy that, or do y'all think it'd be a waste of Frontier's time/resources?
If this idea interests you, how would you arrange the DLC?

Like, here's what I'd do:

  • Animals
    1. American black bear
    2. Masai giraffe
    3. Nile crocodile
    4. Indian flying fox (WE)
    5. Laughing kookaburra (WE)
  • Goodies
    • New backdrops
      1. Lemur Forest background
      2. Red Deer Hideaway background
      3. Australian Outback background
    • Planet Zoo: Sounds of Summer album
    • You, Me & Other Habitats: More Music from Planet Zoo album

I'd have no issues if we got something like that and I'd almost surely buy it. Something to keep in mind, which you may not be aware of if you didn't play at launch, the deluxe edition also came with access to the beta version of the game a month or two before release. Though that beta was only open for a week or two at most, I can't recall, it was a big part of the appeal for the deluxe version. Obviously they can't do something like that with a wrapping up type of pack, so pricing may need to be different.

The only thing I can think of that'll really make them consider cutting support for the game anytime soon would be if the game engine as it is just can't handle birds in a way that'll do them justice.

Which at this point, I'm beginning to think might be the case. We got walkthrough exhibits, but they run on looped animations.

I mean, I think support will be ending in the next year (possibly wrapping up in early 2024) as much because the game itself is showing it's age. It was never the most ... uh, tidy game in terms of function - the fact you can't actually develop a zoo in the entire map without killing your computer, the lag that happens when you have more than 300 animals, etc. I believe I heard/was told that the game has a particular processing limitation that newer games do not. So, I think PZ1 will not be supported much longer but that they will also work on a PZ2 shortly thereafter (hey! Maybe they'll fix the Malasian Tapir for PZ2!):p

One can hope, but I'm not sure they'd be eager of a PZ2 after what happened with JWE2.

I think the same like you, next year would be a great ending for planet zoo. 5 years of support, not many games can said about that and we would have a big rooster. Also 20 dlcs.

There is a potential pattern, Planet Coaster and JWE1 both finished content with 1.12. Planet Zoo is currently 1.12.

It could easily be coincidence, rather than purposeful. Flighted birds is an obvious option left for example, and an animal pack seems a weird DLC to finalise with.

That said, if there's still nothing at the end of April, then I'd suspect it probably has ended, nothing by the end of July would cement it I think

Planet Coaster got ported to macOS and then that was that!

I’d suggest that Frontier need the revenue from Planet Zoo as some of their newer brands have been underperforming. So as long as Planet Zoo isn’t ported to macOS …… :)

Personally I can't see planet zoo being ported to Mac at least in the current hardware Mac's run on. We can say that as soon as the current generation if consoles get planet zoo then that's development done.
A good point though saying that planet zoo development could continue considering the weak performance of the new F1 game and likely limited lifespan of Jurassic world

Frontier didn’t do the PlanCo port, they handed it to someone who knew the platform rather better, Aspyr. I think that Apple silicon has the power, it’s more a question of whether the potential market is big enough.

I think that support will continue longer than we expect, based solely on the fact that I can think of more than 4 highly requested dlc themes that haven't yet been covered.

Once we've had islands, highlands, deserts, rainforests, temperate woodlands, coasts, treetops, and a children's zoo and/or domestics pack I'll start worrying.
