This is quite representative of a major (IMO) issue between ED and EDO : the complete 180° on design philosophy.
ED is quite hardcore on the "immersive" part. Odyssey is the opposite. While ED can be quite strict on his immersion stuff, to the point of being annoying (remember the ship transition that was removed with EDO ? Or the "non warp between star" thing, so you enjoy your Hutton trip), Odyssey just go the opposite way (instant respawn, ticket system, 4th wall breaking menu, 0g that doesn't do anything but claim it's 0g...).
It is not even because making ingame menu like the holographic one aboard the ship is difficult. They did it already, and it's been done since doom and dead space 1. It's not a weird design that went through. No, it's a specific design philosophy. From concept to production, it went through no issue.
The whole design of Odyssey, except for exobiology (somehow) is on a different philosophy than the rest of the game. It seems another studio made the game. It's the equivalent of Dust 514 was for Eve.
The ONLY immersive thing I found is the breath leaving water inside the helmet if you run for a while. That's what ED design philosophy is about. Sure it's not gameplay. No, it's not going to keep you entertained for hours, but that's what ED did anyway. For better or for worse, and the people who enjoyed it stayed, the one who didn't left, or made peace with it.
And that's bad. Not because it's objectively bad. Maybe you like it that way. Or even prefer it. But it's bad because a lot of your customers and players EXPECT you to follow the philosophy you used. Consistency, you know ?
If I play Battlefield, and I'm quite a fan, I expect the next battlefield to be a "realistic" (or should I say "plausible " ?) multiplayer mil sim. If they release Battlefield : My Little Pony, I'll wonder WTH happened. Chances are, you'll lose customers. Whether or not BF: MLP is actually a good game.
This is not only in the whole design philosophy, but also by repeating the same mistakes made. Like all the engineering issues.
Eventually, to me, Odyssey feel like some random no name sub contracted company made it. Either that, or the lead designer have changed so many times , they can't have any philosophy that last.
Welp, now I want to play battlefield : my little pony.
Weird I felt that Odyssey was basically Elite with legs. The way I saw the Odyssey UI was that our guy is seeing it. Like, that is what we see, in the game. It's some holographic google glass stuff.
