General / Off-Topic RCTWorld General Discussion

Isn't it ironic that when you watch a RCTW you tube video you are presented with a planet coaster advert first!

The thing is, how rediculous to monitise their own trailer by allowing adverts! It's so stupid. The point of the trailer is you want maximum exposure, so you don't want to put people off with ads. If any of the marketing guys I work with suggested trying to scrape a few extra ££ by placing other people's adverts ahead of our own, I would have to slap them repeatedly with a large fish until they stopped being so stupid.

well done frontier for taking advantage of the advert slot Atari have created - it's hilarious. But shame on Atari. Those guys need to read business for dummies and get real!

Lol yeah, that also happened to me - I think Atari wants to make SOME money [haha]

It's totally illogical though. The entire point of a trailer is to get as many people as possible to watch it. You can basically throw away 10% of your audience the moment you opt to monitise your videos with adverts - and the tiny income they would get just isn't worth it.

I can imagine what happened here. Someone at Atari noticed their collective channels got xxxx number of hits and that they would earn xxxx if they monitised it all. And rather than do it cleverly and selectively, they just did the whole lot - including their own trailers (lol).

We're talking here about common sense failings that would normally end a persons career when they're still an intern. Yet amazingly these jokes continue to happen at the hands of supposed professionals.

"Professionals" who don't have ANY Clue about Videogames. Granted they fail at Marketing too... Just some ancient Businessmen that probably will have to file for Bankruptcy soon. Again.

There is a further potential angle to this. And this is purely speculation in Ataris case.. But generally when a business owes a substantial amount of money and has by any standard measure already failed, it's not at all uncommon for the owners/operators to drag out the impending failure for as long as possible, as they can still legitimately pay themselves huge salaries throughout.

Ataris business plan appears to be to cash in on old IP in the quickest way possible, with not very much regard for the future value of the IP's they're pillaging. That is not the business plan of a company that wants to grow for the future.

In Atari's case, they own enough IP to generate sufficient turnover to 'manage' debt for several more years. And generally, if you owe millions, it's made as easy as possible to survive as long as possible, simply so some of the money might be paid back. That's just business. I wouldn't recommend buying products from a company in that position though!

Indeed, and as such (and I decided this a few months back) - I will NEVER again purchase an ATARI published game until it is in full release, and at such time I can read how well/poorly it is being received.

Which is a shame, as some of my favourite gaming moments are with ATARI, and indeed even now playing the reboxed ATARI 2600 (Emulator) with my kids is great fun... oh well.

You do have to remember that that's the old Atari you're thinking about, this is infogrames rebranded as Atari.

Yeah, I agree with you !

The weird this is, Inforgrames did (a very long time ago) used to be a forward thinking publisher AND developer of some very highly regarded titles. Unfortunately following the financial success that comes with actually making good games, they seemed to think they could make more money by just buying up other studio's and their respective IP. It got huge, very quickly - within years they were spending hundreds of $millions on acquiring other businesses.

I don't know exactly what cause they collapse and ultimately left the holding company they had formed in $400m+ debt. But I imagine that as they became more focused on making money via dealing in IP, they became less in tune with the movements of the ever changing video game industry and what the newer generation of players actually wanted.

Probably best to forget the histories attached to either name at this point as back when either was really relevant to the industry, the scale of their operations was on a different level to now. The current Atari, should from the consumers point of view be considered and judged as a fairly new company.

A Bit OT but the 2600 used the MOS 2507 (MOS produced the awesome 6502 - designed by Chuck Peddle) and was owned by Commodore not long after. Its based on the 6502 which was in the first Apple Computer, C64 and many others.

My advice do not ever buy an ATARI/Infrogrames game ever again, doesn't matter if it's in finished state or not because their previous finished games we're also pretty bad.

I doubt transport rides won't be there for final release, considering that they promised they would come out during EA.

Remember the list?

Time will tell though. Either way, it seems you guys are getting a good kick out of it. It reminds me of why I stayed out of this thread for so long, sometimes I feel you guys go a bit too far. -- But humour is humour. I just find it hard to see the funny side on this one. [yesnod] My mistake on taking this for a serious thread.

I do not know why I care so much.

JMR, I missed this when you wrote it due to work, but I wanted to say something.

I don't think that as time has gone on people have gone further to make their jokey comments, I think it's more a case of Atari simply providing such regular new material.

I totally agree, it should have stopped a long time ago, and it often, in the cold light of day isn't very funny. I think that's reflected to an extent though. For example when the issue of the 'deceptive' physical copies comes up the jokes tend to give way to genuine disgust. But on the other hand, sometimes things happen that could only be from Atari - such as Nook posting about 'the cleanse'. I just don't know how it's possible to not find the humour in that! It's funny for so many different reasons. Sure, it's sad too... But the guys on this thread have for the most part got involved in PC so they're bound to mostly see the funny side.

And it really is never ending. They went and monetized their own trailer, just to scrape the odd dollar and as a result PC's trailer appears before their own! They made a really cringey joke about copying RCTW not PC. The whole cleanse thing... The new update that was expected to fix the stuff #10 broke but didn't fix all of it and introduced new problems. This is all literally in the last week.

I guess the point is, the joke will be over when they stop making it.

As I said in your stream - I'm not anti RCTW, i'm just sad/frustrated by it. But Atari, it's like they made a poor quality game and on top of that seem to constantly find new ways of making a joke out of what they created. And if the game was rock solid, it would be good ironic humor. But it's not. Saying 'soon' as a joke to your own customers after so long waiting is... well, let's just say in my opinion it's in far worse taste than anything said on this thread.

EDIT: Watching your latest PC stream back right now :)
