(re)starter Ships

Will Ironman players be in the same instance (?) as regular players?

Will Ironman players get the benefits of starter ships, or do players forfeit them while playing in this mode?

The Ironman players, play together. They get the rewards, corresponding to their engagement of kickstarter (and old store)

+1 for this!

I do understand people's frustration that they may have missed the boat if they didn't know about the Kickstarter. But it would be nice if Frontier gave us this as a thank you for believing and supporting even when others didn't.

I see, even not why some people dispute the obviousness. If I engaged in a Cobra MK III with 4000 cr, at each time that I start a new game, This is to have it permanently. The opposite would be absurd

I'm glad someone mentioned Ironman in this discussion. That is where I could see starter ships being abused. If someone can get, for instance, an Imperial Eagle Mk II Fighter with upgraded weapons and shields every time they start a new character that might be a bit of an invitation to grief. In the regular game that is part of what we have to deal with and we'll be able to build up to a point where it won't be such a problem. They'll only set us back, so no biggie. But in Ironman, as I understand it, they could wipe out a lot of someone's time and effort with no risk to themselves. Obviously PvP is part of both regular and Ironman. But an unbalanced PvP, where one side has nothing to lose and the other side does, doesn't sound right to me.

I'm not sure there's that big a difference between ironman and normal mode in this respect. If you get beaten in ironman mode it doesn't automatically mean you die and lose everything ... you just need to eject in time.

So ISTM that the possible impact exists to a similar level in both modes. Let's hope that the Kickstarter backers (who are the only ones who had access to the starter ship upgrades) are here to play Elite, and not to game it ;)

Hang on. As much as I want to see permanent replacement of starting ships in the event of losing a ship, I suppose there may be a potential problem...

A backer could start with a cobra III, sell it, buy a sidewinder l, crash that and then get a shiny new cobra as a way to churn credits. That would have to be stopped.

Having read the comments I agree that as backers the starts should only apply to new commander slots. If I get blown up after 5 minutes I can delete the commander and create a new one with the same start. If I have invested a few days and then get blown up without the insurance, well that's the risk I've taken. I would either have to take out a loan or take the sidewinder. Free Cobra on death is too much and this coming from an KS backer.

What if it takes too long to earn enough for the insurance? As far as I can see, the early advantage of a starter ship will soon disappear once people have played for a few weeks. Once someone can earn enough for ship insurance, then this whole issue doesn't matter anymore.

I just don't like the idea of new players who backed KS effectively having to treat the game as ironman mode until you can earn the insurance premium. And I don't think the solution of taking on debt from a loan shark right at the start is any better: your 'advantage' quickly turns to a debt.

The kickstarter reward is supposed to be an advantage. That was the point, like it or not. Anyone got a better idea than the ones that have been suggested already?

Maybe your starting cobra can't be sold? Thats an option.

I disagree, the KS reward is exactly that, a reward. Every time you start a new commander you will have access to this unlocked start position.

This is no different from FE2 where you have a choice of start positions, Ross 154, Sol or Lave.

It might be me, but I don't understand why everything is a competition. You choose what YOU want to do.

My understanding of the loan mechanic from the DDF is that you will effectively get missions generated to pay off the debt.

Exactly, so - in essence - you will not have the need to get a "free starting ship", even if you loose everything you had, you will always be able to get your current ship back... it just will take time 'till you generate profit for yourself again, since you will be busy paying off your dept.

So, yes, every new character you make will have all the starting options your backer level allows you to take, but you will only be able/have to choose them once.

I've read your posts and just wanted to stick my 2p in (fyi I'm a later premium beta backer).

In one word: Yes! By paying a premium up front for earlier access to the game, KS has effectively given a *small subset* of Elite Dangerous players a small advantage when it comes to starting up a new game, and ongoing insurance costs.

Personally I hate things like pre-order and pay-to-win DLCs for most games - but this one I have no problem with because at the end of the day it *isn't* going to affect me or you as players - we're still all playing the same game and rather this is a reward for faith in FD to bring this game to market.

At the end of the day, if you take a rich person and a poor person and stick them in a lion cage - the lion doesn't care about status or privilege - it'll kill them both - ED is a big lion cage and we're all going to get thrown into.

Edit: You could always head over to CIG and put down $1500 on their new ship you might see sometime in the next two years...

That actually is already in the game. Just look at the pulse laser you get with your sidewinder (loaned). You can sell it, but you get 0 CR for it :p

I also read in the DDF:
...
  • Starter ships with starting equipment have no excess fee
  • The excess fee is a percentage of the ship’s total value (including equipment)
    • Any active criminal bounty is transferred to the excess fee
...

For me the plural in Starter ships implies this means your possible KS Starter Options. Can't read any other meaning into it.

If they are loaned like the current pulse laser at the beginning this should be fine. And I also don't want to wipe my progress all the time while grinding up, just because starting a new commander would put me in a much better possition than continuing because i can only get a tiny ship without equipment.

Edit: On the other hand, you should never fly without the cash for insurance, so I could live with only tiny free ships also. I think I would be happy with both. I just think the advantage is only big at the very beginning of the grind, later it makes no difference, so early backers don't really have a giant advantage over release players in the long run.

Ships in ED are not a big investment. Yeah in the beginning you wont afford a Panther Clipper. Play a few months and you'll probably afford as many as you want.

well

these are my options:

Pirate: Have the option to start in an anarchic Frontier system with a stolen but upgraded Cobra Mk III and only 100 CR (randomised system choice for multiplayer reasons). Your name forms part of the naming database (so your name will be one of those used randomly for non-player in-game characters).
Federal Trader: Have the option to start in a Federal border system with a basic Cobra Mk III loaded with cargo worth 1,000 CR and 1,000 CR in cash (randomised system choice for multiplayer reasons). Download a digital copy of the official sequel to “The Dark Wheel” novel.
Imperial Bounty Hunter: Have the option to start in an Imperial Colony with an Imperial Eagle Mk II Fighter with upgraded weapons and shields and 1,000 CR (randomised start system choice for multiplayer reasons). Receive a digital copy of the game and 500 credits when starting a new game.
Reserve your Commander name in the game (first come, first served, except Jameson).

So for me its clear to read, i can chose one of these options each time when i start a new commander!

Like it or like it not, we early backers spend much money without knowing will there be success or not! Will it be developed or not! Therefore, taking that risk and being a helping hand for Frontier its more than fair enough to hand out some options for us, BECAUSE we early backers paid for those!

Additional like a lot other too i upgraded for premium too, with extra money!
one thing is absolutly clear, yes, if someone starts at the same spot, same time, i have better chances to win a fight in an eagle than he in his peeshooter. But after just 10- 20 hours he might be in the same ship

So my question is now, if i paid 6 times more than anotherone, who waits til release date, where is the deal getting some starter options?

I disagree, not least because one start has a stolen but upgraded ship, if it's stolen that implies it is now the property of the player (albeit undocumented property and thus, presumably, harder to sell ... it should still be sellable).

There's a big difference between allowing a new commander to be created with a more expensive ship and giving backers a permanent security blanket.

Regarding the insurance; don't sweat it. By release, the game will be balanced such that insurance for backers that start with a Cobra is possible. If this is not enough for you and if you never want to have to slum it with the peons in their Sidewinders, then just pony up some more cash for credits. Problem solved.

It's only a temporary advantage at the start until you can earn enough for insurance premiums. After that it makes no difference. I think!
