Like the carrier names in HelldiversHow about FDEV generate a selection of (appropriate) names and the player gets to select one?
Reasonable compromise?
The problem is that people will choose names that don't fall foul of the rules yet are still cringe as hell. Look at all the wolves and tactical teams and armadas among the PMFs.No they won't have to. Do they review every Fleet Carrier name? No. The profanity filter stops the worst names and for anything else someone just need to report the name and Frontier will review it.
I don't think it creates as much work as you think it does.New Scun……. (Yorkshire seaside town) will be right out then. Still creating more work for the CMs that Frontier no longer have.
That's a YOU problem. If YOU find something objectionable, it's YOU that object to it.The problem is that people will choose names that don't fall foul of the rules yet are still cringe as hell. Look at all the wolves and tactical teams and armadas.
I'd rather not let a hormonal neckbeard name a system.
Implied is not confirmed.Maybe FD should let you name the system for Arx.
I think you overestimate your taste.
I'd also point out that it was heavily implied in the stream that you can name stations and ports.
I disagree with you about it creating problems ...I strongly recommend NOT to allow free naming of systems, the "creativity" of some players (PlanetMcPlanetface) will create more problems than it solves, profanity filter or not.
But the main reason in my opinion is, that a unique name should be "earned". There must be a reason NOT to be one of the "ZA Ploesic UX-23 C" systems ... reasons could be (just some quick ideas) because it is a landmark or some kind of community achievement (1000000+ visitors, 100+ zillion trade at station, ...) was fulfilled.
I wondered when this would come up.Its already been mentioned in this thread but its a point that can't be ignored. Players paid hundreds and even thousands of dollars to officially name things in Elite Dangerous. If frontier start allowing thousands of players to now start naming stuff willy nilly and for free they'er opening a can or worms (not to mention the sheer amount of work needed to vette names and the constant updates needed to add them to the map).
This isn't like the carrier naming which can go under the radar most of the time, system naming is a different thing entirely as its something that'll appear on the map and presumably in mission boards too. It can't be ignored, hence every name will need to be vetted.
Here's a reminder of the prices Frontier charged for naming rights during the KS.
£500 to name a space station
£750 to name a single planet.
£3,000 to name a star system.
£5,000 to name the founders system.
Several hundred people paid these prices to name stuff. For that reason frontier would be unwise to open that particular pandora's box.
However I do like the idea of naming rights being earned as BlastDuke mentioned above. There's actually precedent for that with the likes of Beagle Point, and Colonia, which were named by the same player CMDR Kamzel and became well known locations for the history of events that occurred there. There's also Macedonia's Leap and Rendezvous Point, both deep space locations that other players named and which Michael Brookes recognized the historical significance of. So I'm all for that, as it'lll be rare, easy to vette, and earned via in game events.
I wondered when this would come up.
By a fortunate co-incidence my commander name is also a system name, so I got it for free, along with its stations and factionsWell it can't be ignored.
If I'd have paid £3000 to name a system and now found out frontier are allowing every man and his dog to do it for free, I'd be asking for my money back. 10 years or not.
Its unethical. But if frontier really want to allow it they should charge a significant amount of ARX for the privilege. Make it cost RL money as that keeps it rare and easy to vette, and it helps fund the game.
Is that a similar name to the large town near the river Trent in Lincolnshire that AOL banned?New Scun……. (Yorkshire seaside town) will be right out then. Still creating more work for the CMs that Frontier no longer have.

How about fully developing the system? Like, filling all the slots for development, multiple stations, all those ground sites. from what it sounds like, doing that will take weeks and weeks of work, and finishing that and having a completely filled system, being rewarded with naming it would be amazingI think it should take something extraordinary for a player to be given the right to rename a system, and I'm not talking about ARX or billions of credits.
Colony or camp names, no problem - I can filter out colony names in a system easily enough if I find them offensive.
Yes. "Few" is the key, though.Naming systems/stations would surely have rules to avoid silly things. Frontier has done a good job in the few CGs that allowed winners to name stations/megaships.
But I certainly agree with this. Having most of inhabited space (or even as much as there already is...) as a serial number is silly. It's going to be a bit hard to tell people "My system is Col 987 Sector XY-Z A12-3".
