Re: System Colonization .... Can we PLEASE name the system and stations?

No. Please No!

This is what happens when Frontier allow players to name things.

I mentioned this elsewhere but I'd much prefer Frontier to do what they did in the past with the likes of Colonia and Beagle Point, where players unofficially named locations with names that weren't immersion breaking, some locations then became famous in game through various reasons, allowing Fdev to eventually adopt them and add them naturally over time.

In essence if a colony system becomes famous for some reason or another, and if its being unofficially referred to as a name the owner made up, and if that name fits in with he spirit of the game and isn't silly, then during an update Fdev could officially add it without much fanfare, just like some player named systems and regions from the Galactic Mapping Project were slipped into the game during updates over the years.

Additionally Frontier have to tread carefully with allowing system naming as some people paid a LOT of money in the kickstarter to name stuff. Shinrata cost £3,000 for example! That's why them allowing it post-kickstarter is a rarity and only done when a system has some historical significance associated with it (Beagle and Colonia for example).

I'd rather have "Col 987 Sector XY-Z A12-3"" than "System McSystemFace" and a sequence of double entendres of dubious comedic value all the way to Colonia.

Agree. A quick tour through any system full of FCs is enough to prove that letting players name anything is a mistake.

Naming systems/stations would surely have rules to avoid silly things. Frontier has done a good job in the few CGs that allowed winners to name stations/megaships.

That's a few stations vs the thousands colonization will produce. Someone would have to check through all those, and there's going to be a lot of awful stuff getting through the filter, whether it be automated or going through a human review process. We've seen it with the carriers already. The word salvage currently gets filtered, yet people are capable of producing some truly repulsive names for their carriers. This may fly over the heads of the good and wholesome people working at FD, that may be unaware of some of the memes that the darkest corners of the internet has produced.

I wonder if I may be as delightfully unaware as FDev regarding dark memes, if so I’m truly thankful. Perhaps I’m just lucky and have missed the worst.

However, naming anything in Elite should be kept well away from most of us without the most stringent of editorial controls. From a basic lack of originality through desperate humour and into the realms of outright bad taste we’ve shown just how much we need shepherding on this issue.

It's going to be a bit hard to tell people "My system is Col 987 Sector XY-Z A12-3".

We need to be able to name the system and stations.

We can't be trusted. It also means changes to the galaxy map, breaking bookmarks and other functions. It's also changing the name of systems people have previously discovered.

Arguably base and station names could be subject to limited naming rights, but to be honest we just can't be trusted. My carrier is named after an author, but I have seen some incredible names (in every sense of the word) for carriers, that remind me of how gloriously broken any number of us actually are and how innocent and pure Frontier is.

All of you saying people will name it silly or mildly offensive things things, I say this:
1. Have some faith in the community. Yes I am sure there are players who will do that, but they will be few, and you can always report the system/station name and Frontier will change it if they don't like it.
2. Humour is something that is in the beholder, as is offense. If YOU are offended then it's YOU being offended not necessarily the other person being offensive. You can always choose to NOT be offended. Honestly try it, it might seem hard, but it does work.

I don't care about "silly" or "immersion breaking" names when in real life there are places called "[alternate name for Rooster] Street", "Hell", "Intercourse", and so on. Just apply the same filters that are used on Fleet Carrier names to keep out the actually offensive stuff, and that'll do the job.

How about FDEV generate a selection of (appropriate) names and the player gets to select one?

Reasonable compromise?
Right, I've got the list of what I need, I have it all on my fleet carrier, I can jump the fleet carrier out there and I want to name the system "Alien's Lonely Outpost".
I get to the system, place the beacon and I get the following options:
Jaybase451
Skkins873
Parppano12
bufthen3
garbo59

Does that sound ok to you?

The alternative is that FDEV have to review every name that is proposed. Do you think that will sound attractive to Frontier?

No they won't have to. Do they review every Fleet Carrier name? No. The profanity filter stops the worst names and for anything else someone just need to report the name and Frontier will review it.
New Scun……. (Yorkshire seaside town) will be right out then. Still creating more work for the CMs that Frontier no longer have.
