Re: System Colonization .... Can we PLEASE name the system and stations?

The system names are based on our real-world star catalogues, which allows you to find real stars in the real-world night sky and go there in-game

I really REALLY don't want that feature destroyed by allowing renaming

Some of the Kickstarter ones were already stupidly named, like Stapled Peacock Flesh, Damnclown's Funland and the worse and most insulting one? THFC 1882 because? ...Really?

But all FD really need to do is have some sort of submittal form. So they can approve lore friendly names only... And not things from other films, or franchises, mammed birds, or football clubs. That? Or get AI to do it.

Since the ED universe is our future universe, then all sorts of memes or modern day references are lore friendly.

Or you think people in the future won't call spaceships the Millennium Falcon or even space stations Thunderbird 5?

Yeah but at the same time it's much easier to remember "Anumclaw" or "Deciat" than it is 2MASS J00015444-3007418 lol

The ones generated by FDev or even the Kickstarter named systems? Will still call up under their old sector name. Like Telinar, which carried an original Capricorni sector name. I discovered that one, recently, in an old edition of road to riches.

What they could do? Is add a sub-text/ name for the system when you hover over it and leave the original categorical name the galmap name.

There are already named systems like that available for colonization

If a nice name is important enough to someone then it becomes another aspect of what makes a system desirable for colonising; whether it has a name you like joins all the other priorities-juggling of colonization: What types of planets you'd most like, what location you'd most like, construction sites distance from jump point you like, etc.

The solution is a galaxy map switch, where you can see either the renamed names or the original names or both.

There are already systems in the game with multiple names (you can find them by searching for any of their names) so the database is already set up to allow such, it would just need expanding with a player named optional field.

Then anyone who thinks custom named systems will hurt their immersion can just turn it off.

I do hope though, assuming humanity ever gets out into space, you don't think people will call their local system by the official catalogue name, unless they are lucky enough to have a cool one, right? They will give it a name they like, one they can actually say in a few syllables. No colony is going to keep saying COL-SECTOR-123-XYZ or whatever.

That would be downright unbelievable.

There's probably a whole science on how places got their names, which I don't claim to know, but I like to believe that names that stuck around were simply passed on between generations more often. Because those places were more important.

So make star naming a function of accrued player visits. Reward interesting systems and their architects with the possibility to issue names - say, top 5 systems by traffic per month / quarter get to be renamed (if their architects are still around).

To be honest I haven't even tried colonisation yet because I see little reason in making another generic 1-outpost system. But if it were to be slightly competitive, I would probably give it a shot. The reward being nothing more that community fame.

but naming the system? that would be a mistake imo

Why?

Do you want to draw a line somewhere?

Do you think its better to have colonized systems named BD-1234-XYZ-23 rather than:

a) Persephone
b) Trader's Rest
c) Leviathan
d) System McSystemFace

Is it an issue that some people might choose silly names for their systems, or you are ok with more traditional names? Or you are completely against naming, even if they are sensible names, like erm....

just my opinion. if I build a house I get to name the house but i don't get to rename the country I built it on.
The milky way already has named systems.... (again just my opinion) but I don't think we should get to rename them because they already have a name where as if we build a base or what ever it doesn't.....

the issue for me is stupid names, and who gets to decide what is a stupid name. It is an issue with bases as well tbh, I won't lie. but NOT being able to name our bases I think would create a lot of complaints. it's a difficult one imo

So, you thnik humanity, going out to colonize new systems, would keep the NGC or whatever reference for the name of their system?
They would look up to the star(s) and say "Ah, its great to be an inhabitant of COL-SECTOR-!123-XYZ5"?

Or, do you think, they might come up with their own name for their system, maybe they would call it Pern, or Solasta, or Roshar, something else?

I think it would be highly restricted. in fact it's not a million miles from something close to my real life job in science where different genes in the human body which were randomly named by multiple different people have since been renamed by a committee because there were too many stupid names.

(hell the meme boatymcboatface even mirrors that. ultimately it was not accepted for the ship (tho it is the name of a submersible (iirc)on it) but it was deemed too silly).

I honestly wouldn't mind if we could do something like the "reroll using the existing proc generator" method that stations have, using the same generator that was used by the stellar forge for populated systems back in 2014. Surely not every combination of pronounceable syllables was taken?

At least for the systems that have "plop toot sector ar-x b4-69" format names.
