Read this if you want to increase performance of xbox & Elite Dangerous

Anyone know what the actual tangible increase in load times and performance is? I'm mainly talking about initial load into the game with your ship spinning. I'm guessing the drop into systems is more server side and connection related.

Well, it is time to upgrade anyways, 2.5TB full on my X1. I buy too much stuff [wacko]
At least I'm not the only one. The really bad part is I've only even booted *maybe* half my games. Probably a quarter of those I have booted, I only ever saw the title screen.

Just to add to this, any USB 3.0 external HDD is likely to result in some improvement. From what I understand, the internal HDD is a 5400 RPM drive. Standard now-a-days is 7200.

Didn't check with ED. With other games you easily get 30% improvement (meaning a 40ish seconds loading time drops to 25ish in FM5 for example).

FWIW FD is quite long to boot even with my SSD. Easily a minute or so (should time it one day, just for kicks). I'm talking the initial load. The "in-game" load is about the same, maybe a bit faster, like 50s (again, should time it).

Other that that it's pretty responsive as long as the server doesn't lag (entering/exiting SC I'm looking at you).

Standard for decades is 7200rpm.

Edit: Oops, sorry, double post.

I hadn't thought about doing this myself, as I haven't needed to upgrade the storage capacity.
SSHD's are a compromise of performance and capacity, so I've decided to try this with a 480GB SSD which should arrive tomorrow. I'll get some base times doing the BBR10 BigX race today, and see if there is any difference after I've installed the new drive tomorrow.
I'll post my results and any thoughts tomorrow. Fly safe chaps[arrrr]

Should have auto-merged those, like it did mine.

Anyway, yes, but they decided to cheap out, at least on the older 500 Gb models. Don't know about the newer ones.
They took laptop drives for various reasons. They're still there in the newer models (except the Elite which has a SSHD).

As much as I dislike the abysmal performance of those drives, there are also reasons why they chose 'em.

Power consumption and price? ;) (also, probably heat output too)

The issue is not with SATA2 but with the 2.5 notebook 5400rpm drive.

Those are basically the crappiest drive one can get.

Actually the biggest issue is with the SATA 2. You can take that exact same crappy 5400rpm notebook drive. Attach it using an external USB 3.0 port and it will still be faster.

The drive throughput can't be bottlenecked by the SATA2 bandwidth. So no, SATA2 is NOT the issue.

If you mean by that that plugging the same drive as external using USB3 gives faster load times then that has nothing to do with USB3. You simply have doubled your console drives. Instead of having to cope with a single crappy drive running the OS AND the game, you distribute the load along two drives which while still being crappy, are now two for doing the job one was doing alone before. Simple as that.

Is it true that there is a minimum size of a 256gb ssd or sshd to connect in order to get the MOVE option. Im looking to add a small OCZ SSD 240gb via usb 3.0. As im not really bothered about the space, will this work ?

I bought one of these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00T76ZGDO and put a 480GB SSD in it - loading times are quite a bit quicker than they used to be.

I just bought one of these it arrived yesterday was playing a game for nearly 2 hours when the Hubs leds went out & the game buzzed crashed to home i then realised my ssd drive was not recognised so restarted xbox still drive not seen & hub still not working anyway plugged drive into pc & noticed the partition was damaged & had to reformat (their was no MBR) so lost all my save games & in the middle of re-installing everything nearly greet-in (as we say in Scotland) so be careful it doesn't happen to you[cry]
