General / Off-Topic Ready Player one.

So for those of you who have not seen this film yet, Im not going to spoil it for you.

In one of the final scenes there is what appears to be part of the box art for Frontier Elite. Also much earlier I swear I saw a Cobra 3 being flown in one scene.

Considering that FDev have a very obvious involvement with JP and also Mr Spielberg was this inclusion a little nod or a hint at something deeper ?

Back when I first read the book a year or so ago I though then that the galaxy Map and planetary system in ED would be a perfect basis to build the Oasis from.
Portals taking you to planet sized gaming enviroments. Way to similar to the Galaxy map pick your destination and Frameshift drive to the system. After seeing the film this was blindingly obvious on screen.
Portal transport replaces the Framshift jump and you arrive planet side instead of in orbit round the systems star.

Just wondering what others thought of this did anyone see any other bits of Frontier Devs IP.
If anyone from FD cares to comment that would be great.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
Still meaning to see the film. :) I'll keep my eyes open for Elite stuff. heh.

Went yesterday, loved it! I was a bit disappointed with the lack of Rush in it compared to the book. Didn’t spot the box or the cobra, but was severely hungover so lucky I even managed to stay awake. Disappointed with a lack of virtual space travel in the film, but watch out for the race at the start, brilliant fun!

Yes the changes made were for the most part due to the IP nightmare that it would be, Disney near owning everything would obviously not play ball, they don’t play well with others. Shame about the musical references not being in there, the missing space flight as an alternative to portal transfer was a shame, but at least the serenity was in there. Nowhere near enough giant mechs in the end battle compaired to the book. IMO

Apparently the sequel book and film are being penned, so maybe there will be more IP owners wanting to get on board this time.

Well after watching the Red Letter Media review, I think I'll pass. :D

Same.

wasnt sure if this movie was for me... i watched some trailers and felt less impressed, then the RLM review kinda flushed the notion.

I typically hate teenagers save the world movies.

I will find this movie somewhere out on the high sea's.

I thought the movie ROCKED!

To be clear, I go to the movies to be entertained, and I found Ready Player One to be a fun roller coaster ride of a movie.

Like one review said, it's kind of like Willy Wonka meets the Matrix.

I also purposely didn't read the book first, as "the book" is always better, so it's next on my list.

As a child of the Eighties, I enjoyed all the 80's references (except the 70's disco scene - ugh)

As a fan of Gaming and Sci Fi, it was great to see so many nods - from Master Chief to Jim Raynor to Firefly etc.

I'll likely go back and see it again - and man I can't wait for something like the Oasis to come out - I know each of the big VR companies are working on it...

Agreed it could have been a better movie, but it was still good.

I never listen too much to the critics I lost count how many times theyd say this movies great/bad and I left the theater thinking i had obviously seen a completely different film with the same name.

If one reads a book thats then made into a film with the near exception of the LOTR films they always lack compaired to the book.

I heard some where that they had to cut a lot and they may put it back for Bluray release as an option.

An ED film as a theatrical release wouldnt work, theyd spend half the film explaining the back story, it would likely be the same as the Halo filmettes released straight to download and dvd, purely for the fans.

P.S OP

An Elite Dangerous movie would be a disaster for this game.
I'd rather play with a passionate commited community than a million + newbies here because they saw a movie once.

I disagree. I'd LOVE an Elite movie. But it'd need to have some serious production values to live up to what the game set up in terms of visuals and technology.

I was wondering how many in the audience really understood the references in the movie.

Adventure is a real game you can play.

The Oasis on some level already exists.

I'll wager a load of it will have been lost on the audience. But not to those of us who are eaither nostagia freaks or like me lived through both the 70's and 80's when all that stuff was the Farcry 5 of the day.

Holly Weird is under serious attack from the TV industry, the likes of Amazon and Netflix can put up the cash and have the writers and resources to get things done, they also dont seem scared of doing somethings that are not remakes of remakes.

So I have a few 2600's kicking around, AND a copy of Adventure, and the way they cover it in the movie did a great job of explaining what it was to the younger generation imo.

Are far as Oasis, when we can have friends join us in Oculus Home or equivalent and join massive multiplayer VR games from there we'll be close!

Clearly the characters in the story had trouble understanding pop culture of that period. lol. It bucks this notion that 'old' people did not experience a tech revolution or pop culture before 'mileniums'

Gold farming is a real thing in online gamming.

It reminds me when in Willy wonka veroknica salts get her dad company searching for the golden ticket.

I know what you mean. Without giving any spoilers, the scene where i-Rok chants the spell made me laugh out loud in the cinema, because I instantly got the reference. That no-one else laughed either meant they didn't get it, or didn't rate it as a funny joke. Also when Parzival was picking out a suit and settled on one. I knew who it was meant to be about 3 seconds before Aech mentioned it.
No matter where you go, there you are
I liked the movie.
As someone who lived through the 70s,80s and 90s, played many of the games mentioned, listened to much of the music, watched EVERY movie directly referenced in the dialogue, AND read the book, I wasn't disappointed.

It was classic Spielberg, and that's what made it good. The zeitgeist of Raiders of the Lost Ark, the futurism of Minority Report, and sure he has to make changes for the sake of plot. The only thing I'm sad to see missing were the flicksyncs (though the second key challenge could technically be a flicksync).

For those of you hoping to go looking for Easter eggs and references, there are HUNDREDS! More than even the sites online have caught.

I saw a video blog online where one of the producers said the whole film was one big Easter egg.

Ironically the film was released at Easter also.

I also got the iRok spell reference, a few others in the theatre did too.
