I'm against ship rentals because you should be required to make a financial investment in anything you're willing to fly. I think the only people that would want to rent ships are people who either cannot afford them or haven't unlocked them yet. Either way you haven't got to the point in the game yet where you should be allowed to do that. I don't believe that's even in the same realm as copious wait times.

There is a massive difference between those things and the wait for your ship. You can't do anything when waiting for cargo to be loaded, buying and selling stuff and all the other stuff you used as an example, so effectively the game would stop until it's finished. That's not good. With ship transfer you can still play while your ship is in transit.
Not that interested in it to be honest.
For people who only want to do one thing, the game does stop for them until they get the ship. That's my entire point. Thanks for seeing it. Again, it's a choice. Do you want to sit and look at Galnet while your ship is being loaded, or perhaps plot some routes or look for trade deals? You can do all of that. You just cannot fly the ship until it's loaded. Same with outfitting. You want instant "fly now" because it's not entertaining to do things you don't want to do while waiting for things you do want to do. So "still play" can mean different things. You're still playing if you're reading Galnet or browsing the passenger and mission screens, or perhaps visiting the store. Maybe you could be allowed to fly a different ship you have stored locally until yours is ready. All sorts of stuff to add realism. According to some here you're still playing if you're watching Netflix. So each cargo loading sequence can be like a jump sequence, show a cutscene of people loading your ship and then again unloading it. Same with passengers, each one has to get on the ship. Do that 400 times. Voila content.
Then fly an appropriate ship then. You know the rules, you choose to do what you want to do. You choose to use a ship which can't do what you want at your destination, you only have yourself to blame.
The game does not force that on you. You have done that to yourself. Unlike loading cargo which you have no choice but to wait for if you want to trade. But at least they bring an appropriate ship.
One forces you to stop playing the game. The other doesn't. There is plenty you can do while your ship is in transit if you take an appropriate ship. You can trade, you can fight and you can mine if you so wish. The choice is yours.
But to be honest I wouldn't mind a short pause for restocking, refuelling and cargo installation. I wouldn't mind some thing more realistic if there was something I could actually do while that went on. But as there is stuff you can do while your ship is in transit, it does not need to be instant.

In a distant future that includes space-legs and interactive station interiors, I'd be quite happy to land, request repairs, re-arming and unloading while I go for a wander around the station to take care of business.... and browse forum threads about how instant repairing/re-arming/loading would be preferable.
Damn straight. It is a game in space. One ship one pilot. Fly your ship if you don't like the cost.
I was never for ship transfer in the first place.

I'm not saying that at all. Is the fact that you have instant cargo loading and unloading an advantage? Of course not because everyone has it. The same is true for engineering and every other asoect of the game that everyone has access to. Wha itt does do; as you just said; is allow you to continue playing without sitting and waiting for something to happen.
So please don't put words in my mouth then ask me to pick a lane between what I actually said and your strawman.
I think people are missing part of the point - OP is not actually asking for instant transfers at least in his OP...
Further to that I can understand where he is coming from because I have travelled through a number of systems on the way to some destination in say a combat ship and stumbled upon some potentially new opportunities for trading and had to send for my role specific ship to capitalize on that opportunity.
While waiting for the ship to transfer I chose to do other things in the game in the ship I was flying but I can appreciate that some will just log out and wait for their ship to arrive or might just forego the opportunity and shut the game down for the night.
I would be all for faster transfer times (at least 2x as fast as the current times, yes space is big, it's really really big, its not like going around the corner to the local chippers but then I would also imagine that these mega freighters would have some damned impressive jump ranges, to use a RW analogy, long distant hauling trucks, they typically can travel over 1500KM on a single fill up, compared to an average car that can travel between 350 and 500km on a single tank (without long range tanks). Some long distance trucks can go even further on a single fill up if they have the extra 2 side tanks that many do use. Can they get to the destination faster than a driver in a car?? Often yes because they have 2 drivers and do not need to stop for sleep.

Thats why I use a multirole ship when I am travelling. I can do anything in it. I can use that while I wait for my dedicated ship to arrive. You can also buy a ship at location if you so wish.
I do the same if I need to. If they choose to close the game down, that is all on them. The game does not force that on you, it is a personal choice the same as the type of ship you use. Not having any ship consequences makes ship choice meaningless.
I can imagine a two tier system. Leave the bottom tier as it is, then have a faster (maybe twice as fast) but much more expensive tier on top. That I believe is what schmack is actually asking for and I have no problems with a 2 tiered system, as long as if you get your ship 2x as fast you pay at least 2x as much
I also do have multi role ships, sometimes I am travelling someplace in one ship to do a specific task and happen upon another opportunity but can only really be capatalised on with a specific role ship suited to that task - the example above has happened occasionally but more often than not im in my trading multi role ship and happen across a war or something so send for one of my combat specialised ships as the trading multirole ship would not last too long in either cz or perhaps its a lucrative assassination mission and in that case Im sending for my dual rail gun mounted viper...
Yes and I would be very happy for transfer times if it had an actual ship that hauled the ships with that I could attack or that had some storyline attached to it that made sense. It's not even part of the game it's just imaginary.Uhuh.

I'm looking for is a reason to keep playing the game at certain points. I can putz around for 15 to 20 minutes or so but I can't do it for an hour and a half because I don't have the time to do that. So I have to come back at another time. That's what I said from the start.
Maybe the bulk of the user base doesn't have that issue and if so that's great. However if the developer of the game wants to maximize the amount of interaction their players have then giving them access to their tools in a timely manner seems to make sense. Some of you may see that as a competitive advantage because you only have one or two ships but when everyone has the same access to the same tools it's all about choice again.

You have access to your tools, you just decided to bring a Flat head screwdriver when you needed a phillips screwdriver. What I do is take a screwdriver that can do both.
Use a ship that allows you do a mixture of things. Its the reason why my Krait Mk2 is my main ship (before that a Cobra). It's got good jump range, can fight, haul cargo, mine, explore, it does pretty much anything in the game. Sure my specialist ships are better, but I can start out with my multirole ship until my specialist ship arrives.
As I said, it's all about the choices you make. If you use a hauler taxi, that dimishes your choices, but that is the consequence you make by using a hauler taxi. You could use a Cobra or Krait mk2/phantom or Python etc. The choice is your, make a poor choice, there should be consequences to that choice.

The current system means that it's up to a player to apply some thought to their choice of ship for a given task.
Instant ship transfers would negate that requirement and, instead, grants an advantage to whoever has the most comprehensive fleet of ships "in their back pocket"

A) The current system means you have to have precognative abilities to make the right choice - you likely don't know about opportunities where you're going. What if you go somewhere and a friend wants to do something you're not equipped for when you get there, or there's an event that just opened up (like an AX event)? So many times I've ended up somewhere and didn't have what I needed (for example the impromptu visit the Colonia last week. Now if I could send a ship there ahead of my arrival, that would be great, but no. I have to get there first, then ask for a ship, then wait 64 hours).
B) The current system already grants an advantage to people with more ships and money. If everyone gets the advantage of being able to get their ships faster (I'm not necessarily saying instantly), that's no less balanced then the current system. In fact as it is now, its likely a guy with a LOT of money will just buy ships everywhere (effectively instantly), whereas everyone else will take the poor man's option of waiting for a delivered ship. So the current system may actually be more skewerd than a faster system.
It means that you have to think about how you play the game, you have to think about the conesquences of your actions and decisions. If there were none, then the game would get real boring extremely quickly. As I have said before, take a multirole ship that can do a mixture of things. If you are meeting up with someone, it is highly likely you will be travelling near to a system that sells AX weapons, pick some up. It's not difficult as long as you put a bit of thought into it.
The downside to buying ships everywhere is that they are not engineered. If you want the cash to buy ships everywhere, go get the cash, that is all part of the game. The more braindead this game becomes the worse it gets. Instant or greatly accelerated transfer just makes the game more braindead then what it was before. It will be another nail in the coffin for me, and there are a few there currently.
If the current system requires "precognitive abilities" then at least that means all players have an equal opportunity to guess at what sort of ship might be required.
Instead of simply guessing, of course, most people will fly a versatile ship that doesn't excel at anything in particular.
To me, that sounds more sensible than somebody being able to, effectively, bounce around the bubble (or wherever) in a DBX and then have their DBX magically turn into a Cutter/Corvette/Anaconda whenever required.
At least the real-time transfer means that the person who shows up in the most appropriate ship will gain a deserved advantage over somebody who doesn't - in the short-term, at least.
I mean, Distant Ganks wasn't exactly a shining example of co-op gameplay but at least you have to give the PvPers credit for building combat-worthy ships which could also keep up with the DW2 fleet.
With instant transfer available, the PvPers would have been able to get around in tinfoil ships and then instantly swap to their flying death-machines for optimal killin' while the explorers would also have been able to trade in their exploration ships for more heavily armed ships.
Which'd make the entire idea of a battle in the middle of deep space a bit farcical, if everybody could instantly shout up their preferred combat ships.
I distinctly remember a dev saying that it would be either cheap and cost time, or be expensive and instant.
It didn't quite work out as I had hoped. I think ship/module transfer could be a bit faster for the longer distances and also cheaper.
What we really, really need though is a bit more sophistication in the transfer mechanic. We should be able to transfer our ships to any station, no matter where we ourselves are, with only one requirement: we need to be in a station ourselves to use this transfer service.
Definitely wouldn't object to a bit more flexibility.
If it was up to me, I'd probably make it so that playes could only send ships to stations where they were already Allied.
That'd mean a bit of planning was still required and it'd create more of a reason to become allied with different factions, as well as preventing people who did especially bad things within a faction's jurisdiction from transferring ships.
From a "lore" perspective, it seems reasonable that a station might be willing to take receipt of an Ally's ship whereas they might not want to deal with ships sent by every yahoo in the galaxy.
If push-transfers were just a basic thing that'd be fair enough but I think it'd be nice if FDev took advantage of the opportunity to make the system a bit more sophisticated.
