Reduce the grind

It's these kinds of attempts at pedantry that get in the way of discussion.
To invest time is to spend time whether playing or working. You're attempting to make a disctinction with no material difference.

The distinction is also incorrect. As well as trying to divert the discussion into a semantic debate about whether something literally qualifies as an 'investment' as opposed to addressing the premise of the issue, his/her position is also incorrect from a pedantic standpoint, as I have said above.

HG is making FDev look bad. They don't ignore the glaring problems with their game. HG is showing pride in their game and are not afraid to make big changes to make the game better. FDev could learn something from them.

Open only!

My belief is they both have different core aims. Hello Games is currently focussed on making NMS a better game. Frontier are focussed on growing the business. FDev could develop ED at a similar pace as HG has developed NMS but that wouldn't fit their aim. One has to say they have done a reasonable job of expanding into new franchises. It just likely comes at the cost of ED.

He absolutely is not, at best you dont understand what he is saying. Investing time means you do something now in the hopes of a future payoff. That is not pedantry, that is how many people genuinely play. That is why people want to know the future of a game; many literally say they will stop playing if they dont like the future plans. In other words, they dont have enough fun now, and they invest their time playing hoping it pays off in the future. And that absolute is a completely insane way to spend your free time. Playing a game should be fun now. There absolutely should be instant gratification. Having people have fun is the sole reason for entertainment products to exist in the first place.

If you 'invest time' in the hopes you may one day have fun with a computer game, you should stop right now. The very concept of 'grinding' exists solely because people voluntarily 'invest' their free time because they somehow cannot imagine they could do something that is fun now and rather spend their time doing something they readily admit is not fun at all.

The very concept of 'investing time' is a rotten festering wound in contemporary gaming culture, and rather than it 'getting in the way of discussion' it should be discussed openly far more often.

I believe in free will. I suggest if NMS makes you feel better, play it. If Elite is your thing, play it, if you believe in fairies, I suggest star citizen..

This is also true. People feel emotionally involved in ED being successful, as do I. And people feel like FDev's actions aren't conducive to ED fulfilling it's quite obvious potential, as do I. The complaints are borne out of frustration that it's not the game it could or should be.

Good point I guess.

And thanks for not making a jerk reply. Others could learn from your example.

Invest: put something in to get something out.
Time in therefore fun out.
In Elite that flow is interrupted by spending protracted periods gathering raw materials on planet surface. If that was presented in a more engaging way nobody would mind. Brain trees, or shooting rocks is a hurdle to doing the things I'd rather be doing.
There is no deeper meaning or any need to look for one than the one stated.
Let's not disapear down a semantic rabbit hole that's gona derail a thread.

Yeah. And do not let anyone convince you that, for example, all the new Beyond bases power up crafting requirements is actually just more grind!

Maybe you're right, but the basic crafting is now much easier and direct. I stopped playing NMS 1 year ago for this reason and now I can play the game without feeling overwhelmed.
And what is more important is that the developers realized that and changed it.

With ED I still feel overwhelmed for most of the game contents (powerplay, engineers, guardians, thargoids combat).

Yeah I know, it was a bit tongue in cheek of course. But it shows the clear marketing effort by HG to try and spin positively one of the main weakness of NMS imo, i.e. its merciless grind when clearly they have actually added grind to it and not in an insignificant way.

Personally I think that in many respects the grind is the game, both in NMS and here. Some parts of it I like, others I do not. But that is inevitable in games that have so many moving parts like NMS and ED.

The QoL changes you mention to minimize the worst aspects of the grind are indeed welcome and from what I can see both dev teams are constantly iterating on those.

ED can be challenging: I watched a few videos before I hit those guardian ruins but my first run thru was still a disaster, ended up with a load of guardian sentrries chasing me back to my ship, it was hilarious! I had to fly away then log out. Figured it out on the second run thru.... 😃

Could we please have some hard evidence for the above statements?
