Remove the Engineers

In the hype for Starfield I decided to download Elite Dangerous again, and a few minutes later I realized why I had uninstalled it before: it was extremely boring and tedious having to make engineers.

I wanted to be able to play exploring, or fighting ships and Thargoid, but without engineers it's impossible to have a good experience.
Collecting materials is okay, but there are so very many engineers and modules and each one does one thing and very far away from each other, engineering a ship for combat for example is extremely demotivating, your jump is tiny, until you go all the way between one engineer and another you've already abused the game.

If I ever see any news that engineers have been removed, I'll install and play this beautiful game again, but until then I see no reason to play it.

Nobody will agree with you just saying

well, there are people who agree, they just know that given fdev's purpose for adding engineers is to drive players to playing more when they've got all the ships and tried all the activities... that despite many years of some players asking for them to be gone, they remain. that fdev is just definitely not going to ever do this.

this is an pointless of an ask as 'open only' or offline mode, or completing pp. just never going to happen

I wouldn't mind them winding-back the on-foot engineering a bit - I am having terrible trouble getting into it - so much stuff, so many fights, "how many power regulators to upgrade my suit?" etc

Its just progress, no one has to do it, engineering just makes things easier.
Removing it would be like taking the inline 6 engine out of my truck and chucking two cart horses at the front.

I've thought for some time now that engineering would be so much better if you didn't have to repeatedly go through all 5 grades on each module every time.

The first time for each new module at each engineer ok, but after you've unlocked all 5 grades on a module at an engineer, it would be so less tedious if you could then just upgrade to the level you want on subsequent modules without going through the gamut again.

e.g - I've upgraded every class of FSD many times. It would be nice to be able to now just take a new one and upgrade it to grade 5 and add an experimental effect without having to start at grade 1.

Seems reasonable

you don't get it though, engineers wasn't added to the game to make it more fun, to have any logical reason in lore, or to add to the game play.

it was created just to add a bunch of cheap rewards for players to chase without needing to add any new game loops. players will play more just because there is this completionist drive, or fomo, or needing the best that tons of players have that will be much harder to feel like you've reached the finish. fdev was experiencing this player endgame crisis already at the time of engineers being added.

they definitely won't do anything to engineers that is counter to its goal of increasing how much you are driven to participate in the game loops. so if the idea results in grinding less, forget it. its only there to drive you to play these game loops more.

This is one big advantage of moving to Colonia: there are four engineers, about 30 LY apart each, which between them have a full set of ship blueprints and easy unlock requirements. Material traders are also conveniently close by, and if you did ever get Odyssey, you'd also just have four nearby engineers with fairly easy unlocks for all your on-foot engineering.

(If you do go for this, make sure Martuuk, Dweller, McQuinn and Ryder are at least at rep 4 before you depart, or you won't get the invites for all the Colonia ones)

I agree that Engineering should be removed from the game.

Not because of the grind (not that I see it as a grind, but it is an essential MMO mechanic that you'll find in any other game. At least in Elite things aren't time gated!). But because it completely destroys the balancing of ships and the game :)

I see what you did there....

For a split second I expected your post to end with "but for the distress it causes the moderation staff when engineering threads eventually get out of hand" ;).

I'm just glad people already reminded OP that playing Elite is completely optional. But it looks like OP has other plans for the near future anyway.

I'm a little confused at why CMDR's want to get rid of engineers? With out them you wouldn't have any reason to land on planets to collect raw materials. My ships would have much shorter jump range without engineering. The search for any of the materials is part of the challenge. There might be reason to have play in the arena so player can just purchase the ship they want and pew pew to their hearts content. The grind is like life , for a never ending game its part of the mission. I have to mow my lawn ever week i may not love it but its part of life.
