Repeat the same Guardian unlock 18 times? Really?

This is how this got designed.

"We're taking flak for using CG's to unlock the anti Thargoid weapons..."

"Let's make a kind of... Personal narrative, where you unlock stuff yourself then"

"nice, that'll work"

"Hey this should take about the same time as a CG to unlock right? Just for each player?"

"Makes sense"

"Oh .. we only have this one puzzle? Well... "

Except it doesnt take any more effort to demand '1 blueprint' over '18 blueprints'. They intentionally add the grind regardless of any staffing issues. The grind is here not because of any kind of circumstantial factor, but simply because Sandro believes this is the right decision to make. So it is kinda important to clarify to him and his team that this decision is terrible on every level.

Good point.
I think I already find it so hard to justify the time I sink to this game. To accept the lead designer is either a nasty peace of work, or totally incompetent, really has me questioning my sense of self respect and priorities in life.

I know I'm an adult who spends a lot of time playing a computer game, but no game has ever left me feeling like such a mug for doing it.
For a second I wanted believe that they would do something about it if they could, but you are totally right.

Why the crash site at Orrere is so rough? Couldn't they make it flat so it would take less time to collect mats?
.

Sorry mate, even Orrere suffered from the Almighty Nerf Baton....from what Commander ctgray85 wrote:

Went there last night. The Anaconda has been replaced with a crashed Federal Navy viper. No cargo to be had.

Also nearby is a defence turret protected surface mining operation. Only thing there was one shield emitter.

The alacrity of the Almighty Nerf Baton is in sharp contrast to the glacial pace in creating meaningful non grindy game mechanics. Once again we are deprived of choice and forced into yet another boring Frontier rat maze i.e. running desperately around in circles on pretty planet surfaces looking for rocks to shoot at. They giveth us with QOL exploits and then they taketh away.

Sigh... I need to stop thinking about this, can't let a mere computer game cloud my life for an instant.

Here’s what gets me: I really want to battle the Thargoids and feel like I’m actually part of the galaxy but I don’t have the time to grind for the weapons that would allow me to do that. In any other MMO, the Thargs would be considered “end game content” so not something you can tackle straight away but not locked behind stuff you have to research online to even know exists and then repeat multiple times. Sure, some cool weapons or whatever locked away for the real hardcore players but not just to get a seat at the table for game content.

Also - story wise - how does this make sense? Human-kind is under attack and we know of some blueprints for special weapons that can help us. Shall we (a) get the Federal Navy to collect them and then mass produce them and, I dunno, offer them for sale to anyone with an Elite combat rank (as a measure of “fit to battle the ‘Goids) to help us fight or (b) rely on individuals to find them and then not write down what was on them every time they bring ‘em in so that the next person has to do it all over again?

Now, I don’t have Elite rank but would have no problem having to get to that before being able to take on the Thargs (via weapons then becoming unlocked from a special vendor at Elite rank) as opposed to the current “repeatedly collect arbitrary stuff” route. That would feel a lot more like “end game content” which you have to “finish the main game” (ie become Elite) to access.

Tying Pilot rank (and Naval Rank?) to weapons unlocks (and ships) is a simple and tangible system of progression + reward. Very good (and seemingly obvious?) idea.

I quite like this idea.

Thanks! If they wanted to make it a bit more “personal narrative”:

- Reaching Elite Rank (combat) unlocks new faction and an invite to “join the Resistance”
- Faction sells Anti Thargoid weapons and offers Anti Thargoid Operations (ATO) missions
- Missions could vary from generic “kill this many Thargs in this area” and “evacuate this many people from a Thargoid attack zone” to more specific “scripted” incursions on Thargoid occupied planets, retrieving Guardian stuff to help the cause, etc.
- ATO missions and Thargoids kills in general reward rep with the faction
- Rep increases the number (and variety) of ATO missions available

There ya go - a whole little bit of end game content, with a story, that engages the players with what is happening in the universe and lets be frank, nothing “new” really needing to be coded. How hard could that be?!

My problem with that is that it enforces a HUUUUUUGE grind towards combat elite, especially for new players to 'unlock end game content'. This game has always been about being able to pretty much do everything you want, whenever you want. After a few hours you are in a cobra, which more or less allows you to participate in almost everything. Locking most of the story behind the elite combat status seems not cool to me.

In the old days missions were ranked lock, and elite combateers were given elite missions noone else could do. It worked great, because non-elite players could do similar, but easier and less rewarding, missions. It was removed on request by our fine community. I suggest we bring it back. Have lower ranked people get 'thargoid kill missions' that ask you to find and destroy some of those flying saucers, whereas an elite commander might be tasked with finding and killing a medusa (and be GENEROUSLY rewarded for it). That way we'd all be part of the action, we'd all get appropriate missions, and being elite actually counts for something.

Ugh...it keeps getting better I see. I feel as if we are drowning and can't scream for help because we are under water. Thanks for pointing that out cmdr.

Yup - sounds reasonable: maybe get access to lower grade anti-Tharg weapons and missions at lower combat ranks and save the “big stuff” for Elite. There has to be some point to getting Elite, right?!

Could also, potentially, unlock the “evacuate” missions by ranking Explorer and some “supply the war effort” missions by Trade ranking: allowing folks who don’t do combat to join in?

I have unlocked the Guardian Gauss Cannon.

Nothing else.

The process I endured (not enjoyed) to get sufficient guardian widgets and doobobs, was above and beyond the usual "grindiness" I've come to expect in ED. The map itself had far too many points for the SRV to become inexplicably stuck, and the constantly tanking framerates were unbearable - and somewhat unexpected given my NVMe, 1080ti, 32GB RAM and i7 7700K.

I had to mode switch (obviously) several times to unlock some components from Obelisks (or whatever they're called), which is just unnatural.

The only thing that got me through it was alcohol and having 2 other people with me on Skype doing the same thing, to mock the whole silly process and have a laugh, though admittedly a laugh through gritted teeth.

I must add, on the other hand, that the architecture and the area itself was wonderfully designed visually and aurally, but whoever tested the driving on the site needs to take another look.

All that said - surely, surely there's a better way than this to unlock content?

I will now go away and stop calling people Shirley.

I completed the mechanic once, the other 17 times can go rot in a crater somewhere. "We don't want to waste your time." That statement is by far the most pigheaded given the clearly intentional design decisions being made. Find people who understand design, - what makes a game fun, NOT what makes a game another job to the point where it's anything BUT fun.

Hopefully this will make over 20 pages, and an FD employee might actually respond.
Maybe they'll talk about this in a livestream.
It's terrible and has utterly destroyed possibly my favourite bit of the game they've added since release.

Took a hundred pages in the beige gate discussion before a dev spoke up, so I wouldn't hold your breath.

Oh, thank RNG God Orrere's crashed Anaconda is still there! Phew...

Since everyone is banging the Immersion Drum all the time, read above and keep banging.
Totally agree with the statement. It doesn't make sense to unlock it per individual. Make it a global goal like a long term CG.
"To unlock the gauss cannon, we need 10k weapon blueprints" - We can have 10000 people bring us one each, or 3334 people bring us 3 each. And everyone can have the gun. That's usually how it works.

I'm doing the whole grind too because I want the modules. Last night I ground out 9 module fragments. that's a good 3 hours of powering up pylons, killing drones, dropping artifacts and scanning the same node again. Log off - log in - all drones are gone - repeat. Immersive?

But then, there wouldn't be more grind?

With out the grind, how do they keep the active player number artificially high for their board meetings?

So far, all they know how to do is to add more grind. Not reduce it like they state.

Yup, more grind. What can we expect later this year? More grind!
