Request for help info on getting a new PC (UK)

Can I be cheeky and ask for the total spend? Have you included the OS as well or do you have an available Windows license (or running Linux)?

Currently looking around for a new system as well.

£1,964 including win 10 home advanced 64bit earlier build I posted was £1,956.
If you can stretch to it...I'd avoid the 2TB HDD and fit one of these: Crucial MX-500 2TB. All SSD might seem a bit unneccessary, but that 1TB EVO will fill up sooner than you think. I've replaced all my spinner drives except for an old 2TB Samsung Hybrid I use for backups.

At this moment in time I'll say that's a bit much for what I need, but It'll all be SSD at some point.

The 50th anniversary 5700XT has the stock blower cooler - you'd probably be better off going for an AIB version with a better cooler.

Cheers for the heads up, I'll look into that.

On that subject I'm wondering if I could slightly skimp on the GPU short term as that can be easily upgraded in the future.

I'm thinking about putting in an EVGA GF GTX 1660 Ti XC black 6gb to save about 100 quid. Not sure I need the GPU horsepower at this point and I can upgrade in a couple of years once I have more saved up again.

Dont know, you lose some of that wow! factor. With putting in some really solid stuff in there today and then maybe having it bottleneck you in 4 years time or whatever would be annoying.

It's a bit swings and roundabouts though and who knows what the right thing to do is with the technology cycles.

Blower coolers absolutely suck, unless you have a case with poor ventilation that makes an OA cooler non-viable as the case itself can't get rid of the heat - This is true of some cramped or busy cases. Water cooling is kinda the best of both worlds, but it's very expensive.

Not sure whether this will help or not but I stuck your current list into PC Specialists web site. I've been using them for a lot of years now with only one issue. It came out at around £1650....

The only issue I had was with the last laptop. Cured that by removing Windows 10 and sticking Linux Mint on. YMMV.

Edit: oops didn't add the OS in so add that in as well.

But I can easily upgrde the GPU in a couple of years, maybe when RTX or even specialist VR cards come out?

Crud yeah they're a lot cheaper than scan, how recommended are they?

I build myself but if you really want ready made i would look at a prebuilt from overclockers.co.uk

current PC is overclockers uk, not entirely happy with some aspects that transpired. Kind of wanted a change of scenery in that regard. Then again I'll build it with them and see if they beat the PC specialst site!

All I can give is my own impression. After 5 laptops and my current desktop I've only had the one issue. I'm still blaming Windows 10 for that one issue.

Dig around on the net I'm sure you'll find plenty of other opinions good and bad.

They are who I'll be going back to once I lock down what I want.

Oh and finish renovating the house so I actually know my budget!

No-one beats PC Specialist site price.....I wish I knew exactly what GTX 1660 super they supplied, I think I'll contact them.
Hopefully they reply quick enough.

Last thing I'll say about using them: if anything feels in the slightest bit "off" then just walk away. Better to spend a little more else where and be happier than the other way round. Either way good luck 👍👍

Building a pc is quite daunting I .(especially the 1st one)

But all it is is

Mobo
Processor
Ram stick X2
Cooler
HDD
case
GPU
PSU
Maybe a BR drive
And a simple bit of wire plugging all easily labelled.

What I am Trying to say is ... In reality it is a 10 piece Jigsaw puzzle .
Windows 10 essentially installs itself and a.code off eBay is like £4.

I bought my 1st pc in 1994. An IBM "Blue Lightning" DX3 75mhz
Cost £1000 then another £300 on top for a sound blaster 16 and 2 speed CDROM.
It was an utter POS.
I swore then I would never buy another pc (and back then they were harder to build)

My 1st one a friend helped me with which was a god send.

If you are looking at pre built companies.

I used to use PCSpecialist and they were good but for my last PC i used a company called Chillblast. Highly recommend them.

Yup, I built a few back in the day, I just want someone else to do all the work for me now ;). My time is more important and 8 years as a hardware tech sucked the fun out of building completely.

My 1st PC was a HP 316sx, ah Doom minimised down to about 5x5 inches on my monitor!!! Then a 486DX I think it had the maths co processor, Xwing/TIE fighter days, mucho fun!

hmmm PC specialist don't do the airflow version of that case, with a water cooled CPU is that going to make a huge difference (£300 worth of difference!).

I haven't checked but you used to be able to supply your own case to them and they'd build round it. You'd be responsible for postage costs to them though. I have never used the option so have no clue how well it works though

Do'h re read the email and yeah they still do that, so i buy the case I want and send it in....also they only do Zotac or Palit branded 1660 supers, never heard of those makes anyone have expereince of those manufacturers? (While I check out reviews online).

Ah I can buy the airflow replacement front for the standard case.....That'll be less hassle.
