Responce to Yamiks Shield Video.

I feel that the fundamental problem is that Shield boosters, especially through engineering, provide a large percentage boost for a small fixed energy cost. Originally 5.6MW for 8A shields and 1.2MW for a 20% boost was reasonably balanced. Maybe each engineering grade applied to boosters should also increase power consumption by 5% of the shield power requirements, so that engineering 8 boosters would not add 2.4MW, but 11.2MW with 8A shields.

You may be actually right. I took the mission with my Clipper tonight and the Anaconda actually did some serious damage. Anyway, it is too easy.
Yeah, I been using the Chieftain, and it is pretty simple. Still fun though, like a regular assassination mission but under pressure.

3,500 MJ shields is fine. 16k MJ shields AND the most power hungry weapon loadout you can imagine AND all A-rated everything AND SCB's is the problem.
Not argueing that lol... If I were to 'nutshell' the biggest issue... it is that the problems have been left unchecked for so bloody long, then have compounded to the point of absurdity... the last proposal to dial back shielding was coupled with that wierd nerf to smaller weapons towards larger ships. Course they ignored everyone but the 'waaaah muh bloo glowin bubble' types...

Need a persistent beta with community polling for changes to try and resolve the issues. If console players could link up, we could get a whole ton of community folk and solve it as a collective. Maybe we could fund it by having someone design a My Little Pony theme paint pack for the game? I know a ton of bronies... which isn't to mean I hunt them up, just they are everywhere...

It is certainly true that if the 300% mass penalty for g5 heavy duty was replaced by a 300% power use penalty (which incidentally is in line with the bonus) it would make for some interesting choices...

It isn't to difficult for anyone. Everyone managed fine before engineering, before Shield boosters and before SCBs.

It's all about cr/hr.

Indeed. In that perspective a lot of "don't touch my god shields" posts read as "don't nerf my cr/h". Maybe it's not, but that how I feel about it.

Anyway : the game should have non-thargoid npc based PvE content with a max difficulty equal to : "hard for a wing of good pilots in big/fdl G5 ships" (SS8 or SS9 difficulty)

Then populate the scale from that to "mild difficulty for a beginner in a sidey, like low res and SS1"

I used the same basic tactic (mine was a clean one so I had cops too), stuck with it past the point of no return & had the cutter on 8% hull & 0% power plant & didn't quite make it. Lots of fun trying though ;)

I was in my Corvette though :)

A touch costlier to lose. What were your defensive stats, and were you using an SLF?

It was the same loadout I took to beagle point, an A-7 shield with around 900 hitpoints & military hull (around 2000 hitpoints). Two C4 Multis, two C2, and the rest pulse turrets. I had an SLF on board but no crew (I use it for fumerole searching).

After returning from the detention centre (with a paltry 400cr bounty) I replaced a couple of internals with an HRP & MRP, and put a C3 burst in to replace the pulse turret, it should have been enough extra but the mission failed early & I haven't tried again.

I think with more DPS I could do it, not sure I'd last long in a ship as small as a viper IV though ;)

Had the target wing been wanted like yours I think I could have done it by taking out the support ships but I wanted to minimise collateral damage so only fired on the mission target. In that sense the mission I had was a little more interesting, a tiny bit harder (added cops shooting at me).

Excellent mission template, I hope we can get more of these. If I'd had a capable enough friend to help out it still would have been fun but much easier imo, most of my friends are not into combat so asking them to join in would have meant me probably having to physically defend them too (using my ship as a wall for them to hide behind).

FTL-style ion guns that deal temporary module damage, no hull damage, and automatically hit the shield generator on shield strikes when?

Would be fantastic for pirates too.

edit: to elaborate, "ion damage" would bleed away over time and get cleared on a reboot/repair. Taking a module to 0% effective HP with it would force that module to reboot, clearing all ion damage after a timer. It'd be a hard counter to crazy shield/resist metas like the cytoscrambler was intended to be, since apart from stacking the hell out of MRPs (which reduces your space for SCBs and HRPs) there'd be no real way to sit there and tank it. Payoff is having to use up a hardpoint you'd otherwise be using on DPS, but hey, maybe you can nail their drives with it.

edit edit: hell, can even fluff it as being reverse-engineered from the thargoid shutdown field if you want some lore justification for why it suddenly exists...

These are both pretty awesome videos, and examples of an aspect of ED that I really adore: early progression ships are not only the most dynamic to fly, they're also incredibly effective in the hands of a skilled pilot. The desire to fly the biggest ships in the game is simply a choice, not a necessity. I haven't even tried Assassination missions yet as I rarely engage in combat against NPC's nowadays, but these videos have inspired me to find some in my Chieftain and see how I fare myself!

Edit: Interestingly, I just remembered something I read yesterday from Ziljan who is a very skilled pilot. If I read that correctly, he said that he'd taken his Corvette into an Assassination mission and really struggled with it. I wonder what the difference was? Are you guys taking "wing" assassination missions?

These shield threads strike me as odd. From what I see, massive booster stacking isn't the meta in PVP at all, where speed based medium ships are ubiquitous - FDL, FAS, chieftain and vulture seem to be most commonly used. Reverb, plasma and feedback are basically a hard counter to big shields already. As a big ship enthusiast this would just be the nail in the coffin of big ships...let us keep our shields at least!
