Return from a 3 year absence...

I came back in January after a 3 year hiatus and had lots of fun with planetary landings, Guardian stuff, etc. Wouldn't say I've had "fun" with the engineers, but it's been interesting. Now I find myself running out of steam and losing interest as everything feels pretty stale now...the first time I took my SRV mat harvesting in a field of ice geysers was cool, the 20th time was pretty boring. Still, 5 months of on-and-off gameplay for a tiny investment has been a great value for money, so no rage-quitting here. As fleet carriers are not of interest, I'll probably end up trailing off into another hiatus until the next big update.
Perfectly fine. Next big update won't be free though.

Let me get in the typical white knight responses for ya (event though I full agree with you). It might save a few people some copy/paste time.

"I don't see any grind? What are you talking about?"

"Perhaps you should look to play something else like <insert popular game name here>."

"I don't see any activity in the game as wasting my time or boring, what do you think this is, some kind of entertaining game?"

"Some kids just want an instant win button."

I know I missed some, please feel free to fill in the blanks.

Eh ? Three years... That takes in some extra ships, Guardian stuff (unlock requirements are stated in-game at a tech broker), FSS & DSS for exploration, improved route plotting, mining update, Guardian sites, trade tools, POIs on planets, bio and geo sites, space creatures, Lagrange clouds. FCs next month. Not an entirely new game, but not nothing.

I do agree with the OP about the Guardian stuff, very little pointers in game as to where you go and having to refer to Google was about as great a game mechanic as having to use Wordpad++ to alter your save game file in X-Rebirth to get the parts and finish the URV Forge mission. Luckily I didn't lose my SRV and I had packed a spare just in case. Then that extra 10 LY on the jump range lured me out in the Black again heading for Explorer's End then a run up the western side to Beagle Point, despite already being Elite for exploration. However 4k LY from EE, currently seriously thinking of detonating my ship and calling it a day. It's just one identikit system after another.

It seems to me ED really needs some decent SP missions and content for those who don't want the joys of PvP combat etc. Egosoft are far from perfect but at least their games do keep you hooked and have a bit of artistic and scenic variety depending where you are. Teladi stations look different to Argon ones which again are nothing like Terran ones (in X3 TC).

Indeed. Here's what was added/changed since three years ago (18th May 2017), and Fleet Carriers arrive next month:

There was seemingly zero info given ingame as to how to do this (that familiar feeling again) so I had to turn to google.

The in-game codex contains a specific system name you can go to. no google required (although google helps).

However on doing so 4 of the goddamn skimmers pop up and boom, I'm dead. Really Frontier, this is what you've been up to?

The skimmers are very easy to take down. Have you ever done combat? Also, google would have told you to fit a point defense or two on top of your ship and land right next to the site. Your point defense would have shot down the skimmer/sentinel's missiles.

The prospect of having to jump all the way back to civilisation to buy another glass SRV to do the whole thing all over again just leaves me empty.

There is an outpost right in the middle of the guardian area (in Synuefe EN-H d11-96). No need to travel all the way back

All of your issues were easily resolved, if you had just asked for help, or used google like you said you did.

As I said initially, I didn't want my hand held for the entire mission - where's the fun in that?

I'm not (or at least wasn't) bad at land combat, but am obviously a bit rusty after 3 years. I have always found the SRV to be a real pig to drive, so that coupled with low gravity meant I was a bit up against it. Having 4 skimmers spawn on top of you spamming missiles just didn't feel like fair game design to me.

I didn't have point defense as I just googled a location and brief outline of what was required, and as I'm in an Anaconda the nearest accessible base is around 600ly away.

In no other game I've played in 30 years have I had to spend so much time on forums and the like, just to work out what on earth I need to do to access basic content. That's poor design.

Yeah alot of new stuff were added . But as the OP i can feel the "ever the same" feeling. Still the same mission with the same bug from 2/3 years ago, still no real powerplay challenge, still no pirate/outlaw space ect . The sames games loop and mech.

And i love elite , but yeah it feel half baked on some point.

While there are many criticisms that can be levelled at the development of the game, you didn't need an fsd booster to head back out in to the black and stake you claim to undiscovered worlds. Equally, if you want to push the jump range beyond an engineered A rated fsd, you've got to expect to work for it, no?

It's true that there's not enough information in-game and it's not accessible enough.

For the sentinels, make sure you have a PD on the top of your ship, covering the space above the site. With careful positioning you should be able to avoid meeting four at once. I like to locate all the pylons and destroy the sentinels guarding them before starting to activate any.

Oof, doing this in a Conda is probably why you had a bad time. This expedition seems to be designed for small ships.

Guaranteed if you equip a DBX or Dolphin or another small ship, with two point defences on top, then land carefully right next to the site, you'll knock it out in 15 minutes or so, and if you make a mistake you can re-stock at the nearby outpost.

Elite has many flaws. Show me a game that doesn't?.
Gaming is about getting better. Improving ships weapons armour etc. And a grind to ascend is apparently the only way to climb the ladder.
THIS is a fundamental flaw in modern gaming.
Not new. But progress means Change to make it better..... and elite hasn't done that.
Half cocked bugged content.
Grind In engineering and mats gathering.. all hopelessly outdated. Yet I struggle to see an alternative!
How does one replace levelling?
Any suggestions please? And it has to be simple. Complex won't work.
Gaming for me isn't just about the game and it's flawed mechanics. It's about the Wing. Friends you make. Chat in discord pertaining to PvP or PvE etc.
Gaming is about discovery and the stella forge might yet surprise us? Finding a as yet undiscovered system with earth like planets or a neutron star. Putting your name to it.
Exploration is one aspect that no other game holds a candle too. Apart from a decent fsd Any one can do it.
It's a failing on fdevs part to see this veteran come back and leave cos of the games flaws.
In their defence they tried real hard.
I've been powerlevelling 4 ships since Christmas 2020. Hated it but now I can do pretty much what I like.
I live and hope the FC's will add new gusto to the game. New content is always exciting.
Shame about community goals and galnet I missed all that.
I wish l could say something to bring Op back.. can't. No hope. The demise of a great game?
I hope not.

I unlocked the FSD booster on my alt account a few months ago, and it really isn't that bad. Only prerequisite would be to engineer your FSD, other than that it took me about 3 hours including travel to the Guardian site, and 2 relogs to gather sufficient materials (that was the only bit I didn't like, the commute yielded some decent exploration credits at least).
Which is cool for you and I am not one to deny people their preferences/enjoyment. However, as I said it is not a way I would choose to play the game.
