Review: HP Reverb Pro - The Best VR Headset for Elite and Simulation Games

Want to thank Exigeous, and Heavy Grooves once again for taking the time on the reviews of this hmd. you guys along with cylonsurfer and others have been giving knowledge and great advice for years now. Thank You !!!

This question is for Heavy.

Heavy in your opinion is the Verb worth replacing a vibe pro with lens mod? its the headset i currently am using and im quite happy with it.
is the difference that huge that i should replace the vive with the verb?

Yes it is. The Verb is my #1 Elite HMD. I sold my Vive Pro this morning.

Well after around 1 hour of using the HP Reverb last night I was blown away, clarity is just stunning and the headset was a joy to use. I couldnt wait until today as I had a clear 6 hours to mess with Elite Dangerous!!

Well.... that didn't happen.... the screen is just black! The game loads, Steam VR picks the headset up, the headset is tracking, audio works, LCD backlight comes on but absolutely no image. In Windows Mixed Reality portal you can see headset tracking on my main monitor and the handsets appear to track perfectly, I just have no image other than a backlit black LCD.

5 hours of trying everything and no further forward :( uninstalled all related software, reinstalled it, updated everything that wasnt already, tried different USB ports and nothing. Its appearing in Device Manager with no issues also.

Any suggestions would be hugely appreciated as feeling fairly deflated right now

Hey boys!

I have a few more questions. I wonder if it is possible to increase the image quality by increasing supersampling beyond the native resolution? I've read from others and perhaps in this thread that it still is a bit blurry in far far away details. Reason I ask is that I wonder if we are close to a resolution with the reverb panels where it is mainly rendering that is the cause for blurry details in the distance.

It is also interesting to know if the reverb has an extra gear of resolution as we get more powerful pc's. My pimax has more potential in its panels, but because the need to balance FPS around 90, it's not used with my current hardware.

As you say you have tried everything I'm hesitant to ask, but have you tried switching the headset to 60 Hz and back again to 90? It was a way to deal with black screen on earlier wmr HMDs I believe.

Yes, when I found that fix on YouTube I was hopeful but it made no difference... tried changing it from 60Hz, to 90Hz and to Auto and nothing :(

Hmm. I read of one user on the iracing forums who had a problem with getting disconnects when he rested the back of his head against his racing seat. It apparently affected the contact going into the headset. He described it as a disconnect happening so it's hard to say if it is the same problem.

No, I've wiggled cables and everything is nice and tight and even when I'm holding the headset and just covering the sensor no image appears. You can see the LCD backlight come on but nothing more.

Maybe I've just been unlucky and have a faulty one, another pain in the rear is I cant even contact support as they are closed at weekends, I cant organise a return or raise a ticket as the serial number isnt recognised. Their support page doesnt seem to know the Reverb exists.

Just tried it with my partners PC, complete fresh install etc so at least I know it's not my PC now as it's exactly the same problem.

Hi,
I have very similar issues. Reverb goes black after few minutes of playing. It’s black for 2-3 seconds couple of times then crash. I reinstalled, uninstalled, rolled windows back, changed power settings for usb, tested old stable steam vr etc etc and nothing :/

I've read several people with similar issues to what we are having, have you contacted HP support yet?

Well looks like i am in the same boat. Dodgy cable appears to be the problem, causes random disconnects resulting in a black screen.

Going to contact HP Support today and start the RMA.

I initially disregarded it and thought it was just WMR Portal being sketchy but i can easily force a disconnect by jiggling the cable.

Where exactly?

Where exactly?

Do you mean the cable ?

Pretty much anywhere near the junction from the integrated cable to the snap in block on the main cable. My suspiscion is a poor contact in that bloody great block connector but i gaffa taped it up and then still had the same problem (although to a lesser extent).

I’ll try with cable ties. Maybe I will be able to fly until hp will send replacement. I can’t use oculus cv1 coz now everything in cv1 is just a messy blur.

After being passed to a few different people they agreed to treat mine as DOA, he also told me I wasnt the first person to call today with this problem...

I was offered a replacment but they said it would be at least 4 weeks but couldnt guarantee that and it could possibly be longer...

I went for the refund

I was experiencing similar issues (with a totally different headset - the Dell WMR headset) and also tried a variety of fixes. Tough to know if it is software, hardware, etc. I updated all drivers, uninstalled/reinstalled Windows Mixed Reality, inspected the USB connections, tried different USB ports, tried different power settings, but just couldn't find a consistent solution. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't and there appeared to be no rhyme or reason. It appeared to be related to USB power management, but the inconsistency left me baffled.

The solution for me: placing a piece of tape over the sensor which tracks whether you are wearing the headset. That explained the inconsistency and arbitrary functioning. Sometimes I set my headset down on my desk with the headphones blocking the visor sensor and sometimes I didn't. With the piece of tape over the sensor, the headset registers as being worn and makes no effort to exercise power management. Although this probably doesn't solve your troubles, it might spark some outside-the-box thinking to look beyond cables, USB connections and drivers.

I think this arose after a Microsoft update...
