Rift 0.8 working with Elite Horizons beta -Reddit Thread

How does the performance feel of running it in SteamVR compare to running it in native 0.5/6SDK in extended mode. I would like to hear your comments. In which can you go the highest settings?

Thanks for the feedback

It feels fine. Buttery smooth (as long as you set your monitor to any resolution @75Hz). If I leave my monitor @60Hz, the cockpit is buttery smooth but the world outside has an obvious 15FPS differential to the Rift's display refresh rate.

In terms of latency, it feels pretty much like other 0.7/0.8 experiences (i.e. good, responsive, little better than 0.5/6).

If you try to push too hard for visual quality, it seems maybe a tiny bit more susceptible to judder than the same hardware under Win 8 and SDK 0.6.0.1. Mainly in supercruise - I'm guessing this is to do with the GPU being preoccupied generating terrain or whatever GPGPU tasks it is they have it doing now.

Haven't tried SLI yet, so this is just a single GTX 970 on a 5820K system. Historically SLI was garbage for latency and for SDK 0.7 I don't believe it worked at all, so I'm interested to see that people are saying it's working here. Will give it a go!

I get weird low GPU usage with SteamVR, resulting in a lot of judder on surfaces. I run the window at 144Hz and it goes to 75 in space so it's not limited. I'll just stick with 0.5 for now.

Yeah, he's pretty much dead on. I would say it's pretty much the same. The benefit for me is SLI which I couldn't get working with the 0.5 Switcher thing. I had the game working REALLY well back in the day (like a year ago) so I'm still trying to get things back to that state and haven't hardly played since I upgraded to Win10 quite a while ago.

SLI seems to work but I'm showing a lower usage on my other cards (I have 3-way 780). i'm getting amazing performance out of this setup in other demos (0.7/0.8 runtimes) that are optimized for nvidia's drivers (like the new Epic VR demos). I definitely feel like SLI helps a ton but not in E:D. It feels like a tiny boost for E:D.

IMO, if you have E:D working well with the switcher, I would stick with that for now but I don't know how that runs with this beta. It might not work at all which is ok because this method works quite well.

You guys might have to setup your SteamVR first (tell Steam the size of your room). I did do that first which I didn't mention earlier. I just chose the small space and it showed me a wireframe cage to represent the room. Then when I ran E:D, I could see that wireframe again at first right before it goes into the game.

I agree, SLI feels like a tiny boost, or maybe even placebo and no effect. Looking at card utilisation it seems that it's not really running SLI at all but letting one card do all the work (the ~15-20% utilisation of my second card is probably an artefact of it having to run alongside the first, even if it's not really doing any rendering).

I'm beginning to wonder if the latest drivers just save us the hassle of disabling SLI and run in a compatibility mode of sorts unless the title supports proper VR SLI.

Any idea what I might have done wrong.
I upgraded to .8 and installed the. Stream VR stuff. But when I load ED, I have a black window

When I run Horizons on .800 and steamvr the game minimizes... I have to go to taskbar and maximize it again.

Black screen = driver issue?

Is your GPU fast enough for horizons on 800 runtime?

Yeah all should be good. I was running a 970 and all was working well. Then I bought another 970 to run in SLI.
With SLI the oculus service kept crashing so I upgraded to .8. Installed everything and still can't get the damn thing working
Now the steam VR service crashes out so I can't even go through the steam VR setup wizard.

Going to give it up as a bad job for now. Hopefully FD can do some magic for horizons launch.

You guys know you don't need SteamVR at all. Just run Horizons from the launcher, stay in your preferred position until main menu comes on.
Make sure your primary monitor is set at 75hz at a 16/9 resolution. Turn down shadows to low, turn off ambient occlusion just help improve FPS.
The judder is still real as normal, hopefully they'll put in asynchronous timewarp and optimise lots.

Did someone try this out?

It gives the same result as the steam fix... eg floating 3d screen... not true VR. Is this is what everybody is seeing ?

Really curious if this works OK with latest Horizons beta 4 in SLI, did anyone try? Just got my second GTX970 yesterday and can't wait to be able to use it in ED.

For SteamVR, did you run the setup first at small room/stand-sit only settings and do the two step tracker setup? You've steamvr working first.

Another failed attempt to get dk2 working. I cannot set a custom 75hz refresh rate on my monitor. It flashes on the screen "OUT OF RANGE" them had to reset computer to get it back again. My monitor will only overclock to 70hz.

Create a custom lower resolution and you'll be able to set 75Hz. Turn it back to default when not playing elite. Try 1276x768

Hi and thanks again for this. I did manage to create a custom resolution as you recommended. But it will not select it in ED. it only gives me 59.98Hz. I have finally managed to try horizons on the dk2 using steamvr. But only at 70Hz. A lot of judder. But fine if I don't move my head.

What you set on the desktop, as long as it has 75hz, has no relation to what you set on the hdm.

Set your desktop to whatever resolution provides 75hz there, then fire up SteamVr, then the game.

Once started, select the Oculus as 3d display in config, _then_ set the res to 1080p full screen. The hdm _will_ be at 75Hz, even if it does not say in config (smooth head movements).

Once in game however your fps will obviously be affected by all the other stuff, for example the AMD glitches and the capabilities of the system you run the game on.

Thanks for that. I will try it when I finish work tonight.
