Rift hdmi port users

Arigato. That one's not available in the UK but meh, I never really found this to be a problem in the first place so I'm not going to worry too much about it. I can't afford to buy 10 of them. If someone knows one that works and makes a difference, available in the UK, please let me know!

Hi.. im the OP, i did link the one i bought on the first page somewhere but to save you scrolling down a page hihi heres the link again. And yes, i saw a huge difference, blacks are black and so much more detail.

Simple fix for me; I saw the biggest difference from simply re-calibrating the gamma etc. Although I was re-calibrating the monitor, it did affect the Rift too.
My gamma was a bit too high.

Now the corona around stars is much more manageable, with colour banding in the darker 'yellow-blacks' still there but much reduced.

I haven't tried a 4K adapter yet (same as drkaii, waiting for definites), but its only a minor issue for me (engineer materials are far more frustrating!).

2 threads seem to be running on the same subject, this is the more active so will repost here

Just to be clear, is this fix for washed out colours only applicable to hdmi users?

I am using DVI to DVI as that's what my monitor supports but I have had the same problem since direct mode. Is there a cure for DVI users?

Thanks

I bought and can confirm this one worked fine from the OP - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B013G4EXMM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
available in the UK, whilst there were no issues the picture in the rift didn't appear to be any different, not that I could notice anyway.

What did make a difference was simply plugging my monitor into the HDMI port I usually run the rift on, which enabled access to the Nvidia Control Panel for that particular output on the card, go through the settings to add a touch more contrast and vibrance and of course set the output to full range, then just pop your screen back on it's normal output and plug the rift back in the "tuned" hdmi port.

I might be wrong but I'm thinking those that are having a noticeable change when using the DP to HDMI adapter just so happen to have full colour enabled on that particular DP output, I'd suggest at least trying that method before buying an adapter, chances are you don't need one.

Good info. My monitor is DVI but in theory therefore I could plug my hdmi TV instead into the hdmi on gfx card just to access the colour setting, then switch back to my DVI monitor back into DVI and rift back into the hdmi slot for the same result ?

Good way to do it actually, use your HDMI TV as a 2nd screen just to tweak the output, then swap it back to the rift, keep the usual DVI monitor going the whole time, just make sure you're adjusting the HDMI output, it should be labelled within the control panel.

The first time I tried this I overbaked the vibrance and it make the orbit lines look nasty, i think 60% was what I settled on in the end, hope you get a good result!

I have tried 4 different HDMI to DisplayPort adaptors and unfortunately the results are not good. All 4 of these adaptors are DP 1.2 and capable of 4K UHD.

Gofanco: Amazon (link)
- Results: FAILED
- Why: This adaptor caused blue and pink vertical lines to appear in the Oculus display and severely degraded the image quality

Vantec VLink: Microcenter (link)
- Results: FAILED
- Why: This one almost worked. I got crystal clear image quality, no crazy vertical lines and everything looked great. Except that the screen kept shutting off and back on every few seconds. After a reboot or two, the problem never went away. Such a bummer, I had high hopes for this one.

QVS: Microcenter (link)
- Results: FAILED
- Why: The same vertical blue and pink lines as the Gofanco

Unfortunately it seems that these all fail at supporting the Oculus Rift, however they should work great if you're using a UHD or HDTV as your computer monitor to free up the HDMI port in your graphics card for the Rift. While that's the silver lining in all this testing, I'm not buying anymore of these things. I'll settle using the Rift with the HDMI port from now one.

If it's any consolation, I swapped out the Gofanco adaptor for the Vantec VLink adaptor and suddenly I was able to play Elite in 4K 60fps on my UHD tv. Before I was getting a low-res green screen whenever I selected 4K 60Hz, but now it's beautiful. At first I thought it was a limitation with my graphics card, but I guess it was a limitation with the HDMI cable I tried initially, and then the adaptor into the DP output. So while it doesn't seem to work with the Rift, it works wonders with my tv. And it frees up that HDMI slot in my 1070.

That's obvious as most HDMI cables don't support 4K @60fps. They usually max out at 4K @30fps. Happy for you you got it working now! Enjoy!
