Right what the hell is wrong with the controls?

Right I've just bought into the Beta and the controls just don't make any sense to me. I'm using a mouse and keyboard and I can't seem to get my ship to move left and right effectively.

The default controls are just weird, rolling left, pulling up and then rolling right is the most inefficient way to do something as simple as moving left that I have ever seen in a space flight sim (and I have played all of them).

So I tried re-mapping the controls to put a simple left/right movement to my mouse and the damn ship turns so slowly it'd be faster if I got out and pushed it around.

So, I need a bit of help to set my controls up. What I would like is for my ship to move left/right/up/down with the mouse, accelerate and brake on the mouse wheel, roll left and right on q and e and strafe (lateral thrust) left/right/up/down with the WASD keys.

Is such a thing even possible with this game?

Thanks.

P.S. I have been using the so called 'sweet spot' to move and that doesn't seem to work very well either.

Final Edit - I started this thread really late and started arguing with people instead of learning how to play the game so for that I apologize. I am going to keep trying to play the game and get better at the controls. Thanks for everyone's help.

Turning is done via Pitch and Roll movements. To turn roll the desired amount ie. 90 degrees/ then pitch back or "pull up" to turn to desired heading. It will feel weird for a while but will feel very natural after a while.

You can't move l/r/u/d - this isn't that type of flight model - unless you simply mean using your directional thrusters.

You put on thrust, roll left, pull up etc.

That makes no sense, why would any sane person decide to control their ship that way?

Remember Aircraft in atmospheric flight use aerodynamics with a banking and a small bit of back pressure on the stick/yoke. In space there is no aerodynamics to you need to roll then pull up turn to your desired heading. this is semi realistic.

Firstly, there is not need to start a thread with such an aggressive title, especially when asking for help! You will get a much better response if you just ask for help setting up your controls.

To get your setup you need to map the yaw axis to the mouse axis.

Have never tried mapping the mouse wheel so not sure if that will work. Your fingers will also likely scream at you if you use it.

The default scheme is better in my opinion.

W&S = Throttle
A&D = Yaw
Q&E = Horizontal thrusters
R&F = Lateral thrusters
Pitch and Roll using the mouse

But each to their own.

Yaw is limited in the game to avoid "Turrets in Space like gameplay which should be boring"

Try putting at least 2 Pips into engines when in the blue sweet spot of the throttle range. The ship will be much more manoeuvrable.

Good luck

Hmm well if that's the only way you can fly your ship then I think I'm gonna have to ask for a refund because it's stupid on every level. No other space flight sim does it this way.

This isn't meant to be rude in any way, but if you want easy mouse and keyboard controls then maybe Star Citizen will be more your speed :). Unfortunately, once you've downloaded and tried the product, you can't get a refund, as far as the T&C goes; maybe you could if you asked very nicely.

Really? The very first space flight sim did it this way. Did you really sign up for a beta test without doing at least some token research first? Did you see any video footage and think "that looks fun! I'm going to splash out and join the beta!"

Or what, exactly, did happen? I'm curious to know the appeal of a beta that can attract backers at a quite expensive level with such ease.

Because it's more fun. Makes for far better dogfights. Turrets in space suck.

Also it is very easy once you get the hang of it. Watch the radar. See how rolling lines up the sticks to the vertical and then you can just pull up or down to face the target. Once you 'twig' it is very intuitive. :)

I bought into the standard Beta during the Kickstarter 18 months ago and decided to put the extra £15 into it today so I could play the game.

I did watch some video's on Youtube but figured I would be able to sort the controls out myself.

I have to say that this is one of the most polite pre-release game forums I've ever been in. Ordinarily you'd be told "you are the weakest link. Goodbye", but such is the confidence in the product (and a good deal of British sensibility), that you are very much encouraged to see the error of your angst-filled ways and persevere.

I hope the mouse/keyboard controls work out matey.

I hear they have point and click nailed

Naah not quite yet - they are just prepping it up to sign on all the Eve peeps :)

In a few months time I forsee a new RSI video series, very slick, huge production values entitled "Clickman's Hangar" or something, proclaiming that Lo! Eve with Cockpits has verily arrived.

The booya will be heard on the Moon ;)

I don't get this whole 'turrets in space' remark. On every other space flight sim I have played (probably back to the first Wing Commander), when you move your mouse left or right, your ship moves left or right. It's simple, it makes sense and it works. Why would you change something that works so perfectly for a system that doesn't work? I'm not asking to be able to stay still and shoot things but dogfighting with the method ED is using is at least a hundred times more complicated than it needs to be.

You have to fly it like a spitfire in space. It's actually really good fun if you give it a chance (I'd recommend a joystick if you can get hold of one) it gets to be very satisfying.

There have been some long threads on this, but lots of people do share your opinion that in space you should obviously be able to yaw quickly, however Frontier made the last two Elite games around 20 years ago that had traditional yaw systems and they felt from the outset that the combat had been less fun, they also tried it in house with Elite Dangerous and felt it lead to multi-player turreting. Perhaps someone else can dig out more information.
