Right what the hell is wrong with the controls?

Hold on I have never call FD, or anyone who works for them, stupid. Also never in my life have I ever played a space flight sim without moving. The 'turrets in space' thing is wrong. I don't want to stand perfectly still and shoot things, I want the ship to move left or right when I move my mouse left or right, is that really so much to ask for?

I'm sorry you called "it stupid" :D not Frontier

My very first attempt at Arena Commander on the Vanduul Swarm mode, I got to wave 9 before I died (and wave 9 is bloody difficult). I can't even get passed the 3rd mission with ED. I can't kill one single ship on it's own. I am good at space flight sims and I had very high hopes for this one but I can't get into learning a completely different way to play space sims. It's just too counter-productive.

“Be of good cheer. Do not think of today's failures, but of the success that may come tomorrow. You have set yourselves a difficult task, but you will succeed if you persevere; and you will find a joy in overcoming obstacles. Remember, no effort that we make to attain something beautiful is ever lost.”

Respectfully, best of luck to you in AC.

The only real issue with the ED flight model is that it takes time, patience to learn it and a good level of skill, intelligence and situational awareness to truly master it.

To beat an opponent you have to tactically outwit and out manoeuvre them. Much like classic prop dogfighting.

As others have said, if you want a point and click to make explosions game, SC is for you. If you want teeth gritting seat of the pants combat, stick with ED for a few days, and things will become clearer.

I have no idea how you are able to control AC, tell you what? I'll give AC a bit more love if you give ED some more time. Roll so that your opponents velocity is in your pitch direction, then pitch him into the cross hair and yaw him precisely. You can try turning flight assist off and making even tighter turns if you get good, also you can boost while turning.

I use a keyboard/mouse and it took me several tries experimenting with different configurations before I came up with one that I like the best. (Any commands not listed are default)

Keyboard:
Tab = Turbo boost
Q = Yaw Left
W = Strafe Up
E = Yaw Right
Caps Lock = Forward Thrust
A = Strafe Left
S = Strafe Down
D = Strafe Right
Left Shift = Slow Down/Reverse
X = Full Stop
Left Cntl = Flight Assist Toggle
Left Alt = Rotation Assist Toggle
Backspace = Landing Gear Toggle

Mouse Mode = Absolute pitch/roll

I have a Logitech G700 and customized the thumb button settings as follows...
Front Top = Power to Weapons
Front Bottom = Power to Shields
Back Top = Power to Engines
Back Bottom = Reset Power Distribution

The main thing is keep practicing. Eventually you will find what combination suits you.
Now if only I could fix SC's keys similar to the way I have it in Elite :D

That's because Arena Commander is extremely easy, especially with a mouse and keyboard. In ED you need to learn how to fly your ship rather than just point your mouse at the enemy and hold both buttons down...

Yea but if I start playing ED and learn how to control the ship, it's just gonna make it ten times harder when I play Star Citizen and go back to the normal flight method.

Arena Commander is not easy and if you honestly believe that rolling left, pitching up and then rolling right is an optimal way to move your ship left over simply moving your mouse to the left, then you've got something wrong with you.

So coping with two slightly different systems is impossible? That's a little like saying someone who's used Windows can never learn OSX.

That is just the most bizarre thing I've tried to comprehend today - sorry.

Hmm well if that's the only way you can fly your ship then I think I'm gonna have to ask for a refund because it's stupid on every level. No other space flight sim does it this way.

Hi Corralis,

If you feel more comfortable with the ship yawing from side to side instead of rolling, you can easily swap the yaw and roll axis in the controller setup.

Just a thought that may help.

Dazzy.

My mind boggles. Please wait while I pause my movie, grab a beer and watch this instead. It's bound to be far more entertaining :)

Well yea I tried that but Yaw controls are next to useless in this game.

No, what will happen is you will start to appreciate the ED skill based game play over one not so much skill based :)

Also, wouldn't call SC yaw normal. The human body can't deal with that amount of sideways force, and the Elite model predates even Wing Commander by 10 years.

So we need to learn something new. It works great. You should give it more of a go :)

Hmm well clearly most of you guys are happy with the current system. Unfortunately it's just not for me and it's a shame because I have been looking forward to playing this game for a long time.

I have asked for a refund although I'm not holding out much hope of actually getting one but nevertheless, enjoy playing Elite: Dangerous guys and have fun.

I will agree with you Yaw seems a little slow.

Just have a little patience my friend and practice. ELITE was never a game you could master in 10 minutes.

Very few people here have issues with the controls.

I myself cant fly with mouse and keyboard. The game feels a lot more natural with a Stick or 360 pad.

Yes it is. You can easily get to round 6 or 7 by just sitting stationary and turreting around with the mouse. You could probably get further but I quit the game as it was so tedious.

Nice, immediately insulting anyone who disagrees with you. A great way to win friends and influence people.
