Rubbernuke.exe has stopped working

My preparations for "Expedition: Waiting for PowerPlay 2.0" continues! Had a brief window last night, so I was going to scout out some material traders on my way to Farseer, then run the gauntlet, when I remembered that this morning is Saturday, so I the health club won't be open before work. So I put off running the gauntlet until I got up, because the difference in danger between prime time, and early morning, is night and day. ;)

This turned out to be a good thing, because I'm still adjusting to the move from one of the most agile ships in Supercruise, to a midling one. I simply can't use the more aggressive planetary approaches I can with the Cobra Mark 3. Naturally, I didn't see a single soul on the way in. Knocked off a couple of other engineers before breaking off for breakfast. Three engineers left to visit for experimental effects and

Can you tell that mining isn't a normal activity for me? :D Thanks for the heads up.

Thankfully, I do engineer for cool running non-combat ships. I'll make sure I run some tests before departing. If worse comes to worse, I can swap out the 5A G1 Low Emissions Powerplant for a 6A, G5 one instead. Of course, if I'm far enough away from the Bubble when I find Bromelite, I can just switch off all the power-hogging modules, and cool off that way.

edit: Also, Inara did some weird things with my power priority settings when I exported my build Coriolis. o_O

Well you can lose 2 of the lasers as the 3C wont keep up, just bare in mind those multi limpets can be a pain, you have to watch how many collectors you have out otherwise you find yourself with no prospector.
Ive taken a multi role ship to Colonia before but it was an Annie so there was plenty of slots for stuff.

Also you did fit a PWS but no core mining tools while getting 4 mining lasers which are a bit overkill for the 3 limpets available to pick the fragments provided by the 1C prospector

Maybe I’ll bring something to do core mining after all. I still have 14 tons of cargo unassigned to anything. I just brought the PWS just because it fits my personal narrative that I’m out doing mining surveys, and that the rest of my ship collection is out doing low risk, low reward tasks to pay for everyday expenses and charitable works. I’ve been picturing Elegance of Virtue (Python equipped for mining) and Needs More Gravitas (Type-Nine for hauling refined minerals) doing most of the mining while I’m busy exploring the more interesting worlds I find.

The fact that Frontier outdid themselves in the big boom department has nothing to do with it. ;)

edited to fix some typos

Python is an awesome miner, made me a fortune back in the days before i got my Annie

considering how complicated it seems to be to develop fixes for bugs found in pp 1.0, pp 2.0 sounds like an end-of-the-year maybe type of update.

Unless they plan on progressively introducing changes to pp in bits.

Either way, it will be amusing watching the silly pirate power collapse. Of course we will save a few for the sim archive since even cannibalistic criminals contribute some sort of value to what it is to be human...even as unlikely as it seems right now to everyone else.

I have a question for all of you Powerplay Experts here:

I've played ED for about 3.5 years now and have never touched Powerplay.

I just watched the 4 official Powerplay videos here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7glm5rbPHKxnltQU1SLxdqQrENIXJGUr

It seems rather straight forward.

So where does it all go so wrong? (beyond the cries for open only PP, I understand that aspect of the issue)

ETA: And now it occurs to me the 5th column aspect, of which I've seen references to. It was really that bit of information 👇 that was the catalyst for figuring that out.

The rot started when one of the federal factions setup for a big expansion and some imperial bashing and the PP tick was delayed by 5 hrs.. the federal faction concerned delivered the PP points about 5 mins before the tick too late for the impies to do anything.... then the tick never happened allowing the impies to counter, then the system did 2 ticks at once ruining the federal factions attempts to expand and fight the imperials.

50% of the pilots supporting the federal side stopped doing PP because of it.

How was that possible?

There are four main reasons why powerplay didn't really take off.

1. As you've pointed out, the fact that you can damage other factions more effectively by 5th Column Ing a faction meant that people were put off. Frontier put in some features to help mitigate this but it was too little to late.
2. There was a perception it was only a postman simulator. The base game loop is some players have to deliver propaganda leaflets to either spread your influence or fortify your exiting systems. The idea behind this was you are supposed to fly like a smuggler / blockade runner but there wasn't the number of NPC interdictions to make it interesting, which is why that players were relied instead. However, when you can blockade run in pvt or solo, it made it impossible to defend against.
3. The equipment rewards. Players wanted the rewards. You had to achieve a level three rating to get the rewards and once you had them, you could leave the faction once. Problem was, using the path of least resistance, it would distort the background simulation and resources would all go to one fortification and not spread around the rest of the Power's fortified system.
4. If you did Open PvP, especially if you had fighters escorting traders, it was too easy to block other players, so that they would be unavailable to defend the trading ship next time.

The game mode would have benefited from being open only. However, when the developers suggested this everybody who didn't play Powerplay said NO because they thought it would be the thin edge of the wedge for the whole game going open only, despite the developers trying to assure people. The the Designer who seemed to be responsible for powerplay was moved to a different project and powerplay was left to rot.

I still play powerplay because of the social side of the game, not for the mechanics.

Or...they've already been working on it for a while and have a working prototype?
that would seem unlikely. unlike art / model assets, trying to keep dev work for something like pp forked in a branch while merging in all the changes going on in elite in the meantime would be a lot of work. Justifiable with something like a paid expansion where you have a number of developers working on it. But probably not something only one person would have been tasked to work on on-the-side for some free update.

and I'd imagine if such work was in progress and ongoing, they'd have mentioned as much a while ago or it would have leaked in data dumps.

It's much more likely that this is a brand new development roadmap being put into effect in response to recent restructuring and this work has yet to be started beyond anything more than brainstorming ideas or picking up the original roadmap for pp and continuing it.

edit: and i hope it is new and going to be released in bits. Because it would be a massive mistake and history repeating itself to have worked on such a game mechanic in secret with no user input and likely end up surprised when they completely miss the mark but are way too late to do anything about it. It would be a better idea to involve user testing in what is apparently a very complicated aspect of the game.

you must have missed one of Derrin's Tweets then. They have been working on it for quite some time.

that tweet just seems more like someone enthusiastic about getting back into actual pp activity ...something they were involved in back when they worked there.. rather than a tweet that says a bunch of work was in progress then and has been ongoing in secret since.

there's been no point in talking about pp for years. and anyone working at fdev who may have actually liked it ..would have had no reason to really discuss something they had no plans on showing any love to. But now that it's back on the actual roadmap, there's reason to talk about it. Not really a suggestion that they've been holding back and slow cooking that work.
