Sagittarius A* ["supermassive" spoilers]

While I wasn't really interested in the data gathered, the data I have has proven valuable. The data collected from civilised space up to the Sagittarius Arm on the way out so far has generated 2.4 million credits from Universal Cartographics - good thing I didn't destroy the ship :D - with the rest of the ~2700 visited systems still to be sold, including any data gathered on the way home. My Explorer ranking has gone up three notches, from Scout (my rank when I set off) past Surveyor (at about 250k exploration data sales) and Trailblazer (about 1.1 million) through to Pathfinder (at about 2.5 million). Selling data is very slow, though: one system at a time, and via a slow server.

great job commander! it is just a shame you encountered NPCs that far out, must have taken away from the "i am here first" experience :/

*wipes a tear from his eye* You sir, are an inspiration to us all.

Shame i cannot follow where you went, otherwise my wife would totally divorce me if i were to spent so many hours playing in just a few weeks :D

Has anyone been mad enough to fly into Sag A yet? wonder if there is some kind of easter egg in there? That or impending doom, including the loss of all your recent time and star charting lol.

something i definitely would have added if programming this game.

You just revived a 5 month old thread, impressive. If you get too close to Ol' Saggy, you overheat and die. Surprise!

aww, that's a shame. Was hoping for a "Event Horizon" moment that would scar me for life lol

Exploring is a lonely venture....thank god for the forum :D

Hey Zion, just interested but if you can remember how much did you make from all that cartographic data in the end?? Shame Frontier didn't giving out a whopping bonus for first discovery on Sag-A* :) Or maybe give out a huge payout to all players who make it that far - it would make a nice alternative to "rares trading" I'm sure!

Sure. I had meant to collate it all together into this thread, but for some reason I didn't.

In the end, I had tallied up about 2524 systems visited on the journey, and my trip made me a total of 152 million credits, and brought my explorer rank up from Scout to ELITE. The selling of data was staggered: some of the data I could sell immediately, as soon as I arrived back home, but the rest could not be sold for a few days due to the server issues of the time, and most of it was not sold until after the game launched on 16th December.

At the time first discovery bonuses in the current format hadn't been implemented, although I was credited with first discoveries on a number of the systems I visited here retrospectively (as per the 1.1 update) - including, as it happened, the first discovery credit for the Sagittarius A* system - but no extra payouts were given for them. Yet despite that, the payout for Sagittarius A* itself was staggeringly huge: the supermassive black hole itself was worth some 139.7 million credits. I also managed to sell the data for that particular system only a few hours after the official 1.00 launch, once the servers were working again. A few days after launch, a server side patch in time for 1.02 changed things so that future scans of the supermassive black hole would be worth considerably less, so that future visitors couldn't get as big a payout - presumably so that people on the now-completed "Race to Elite" cash prize contest wouldn't see the centre as an Instant Win path: before 1.2, 139 million credits would even get an Aimless commander straight to ELITE in one fell swoop. (It's entirely possible that it still could today.)

I honestly did not expect to receive such a big payout for the system, and neither did I expect the promotion to ELITE, nor first discovery at the system. I just wanted to see the system before proposed gameplay changes would make it completely impractical and nearly impossible to do so.

I don't know if it was because of this rather embarrassingly large payday in comparison to the number of systems I had visited, or the circumstances of the contest, or the graphical state of the system (it is argued that the system wasn't finally finished until about either 1.1 or 1.2, at a time when the ED Facebook page and newsletter were happy to showcase videos and images of the system), but I'm still continuing to explore, to see the parts of the Galaxy I haven't seen yet, and travel to other places even more spectacular and find things even more strange.

On reflection, now that I've let enough time pass since this journey, I'm hoping to go back out to Sagittarius A* again. In the Reptile. One last time.

I can't remember if I included this originally (as my accounts of the journey are pretty much in fragments here and there), but just to finish, before I headed back to Sol on that journey, I took videos of the area above the galactic core, about 1800LY directly above the supermassive black hole (at the time it was as far as my Cobra could go). It was the highlight of the entire trip for me, more so than Sagittarius A* itself. Quite possibly the best part of the game so far: others have of course since travelled higher and farther, but for me this was my place.

Today, the Nyuena RO-Z d184 system is still my personal proudest exploration discovery, and if I could choose one system only, this would be the one single system where I hope my first discovery tags remain in the game for ever. Even if all other tags of mine before or since - including some Earthlikes, isolated neutron stars and overlooked black holes and ammonia worlds, even the tags on Sagittarius A* - are taken away from me (and for one brief moment it almost did look like it), I just want this little system to stay.

No sign of "God" or Sha Ka Ree though: instead a desolate hole. Oh, wait... :p

LOL, it's gone beyond ridiculous now. :D

Reviewing the video, it turned out it was another Sidewinder.

Hey man just wantdd to say your story and videos are part of the reason I bought this game. The videos of Sagittarius A* are what inspired me to do the same journey. I'm currently 14,000 ly away after only suffering 2% hull damage so far after I accidentally emergency dropped while fuel scooping. And I know it doesn't carry nearly as much clout but I think im on my way to being the first xbox one player to reach the core. Hopefully ill be able to upload some videos screen shots from my xbone

Anyway just wanted to say thanks for your awesome story and for helping me make the decision to buy this game.

Im one of many later explorers to do this trip in my trusty DBE Kon-Tiki II and am on my way to SagA* as we speak (22k LY to go). Respect to the pioneer of this trip and happy trails on all your journeys.

Having just visited Sag A* it was an amazing trip out.

I tried to take a short cut straight through the middle of the dark band- bad move, as i had to double back several times, and once got stuck- as the jump in was 34 ly, and i filled the tank up to max with the fuel scoop- couldn't jump out- que a hour or so of super cruising about..as the other star was 50 LY out!
At here

Once you hit the centre cluster, there is MASSES of stars, and as the op said, this will slow down your pc performance! Once you get within 1000ly of Sag A* you nav computer grinds to a VERY SLOW POINT.. making jumps of 130ly or less help.. i managed to plot the final 500ly jump, but i was afk for a few mins and it pinged up.. eventually!

There are some awesome planets out there, and also some nasty white dwarves and neutron stars to crush your ship when you jump in- take a HEAT SINK.

I have probably done about 1800+ systems so far (21k ly to get back home now) so that and easy 700 more. I am hoping to get to Elite exploration off this(1% pathfinder), but the figures of 152m from december last year make me happy, as they have upped the price a lot- i`ll update after i get back!

Fly safe and get to Sag A*
