Hardware & Technical Saitek x55 rhino

We do not need vjoy for alpha 4, do we ?

I m still hesitating between this one and the warthog, but the twist is almost a must have for me so i suppose i ll go for plastic :)

Works out of the box in Alpha 4, no extra software required.

I know what you mean, that was what swung it in the end for me.

Ok I don't know if I'm just being stupid here but reinstalled windows, Installed the software which I mentioned earlier and it seems I'm running in to the same issue again so nothing to do with the vjoy software.

Basically when I load the madcats/saitek software all the controls on the throttle are greyed out until I unplug the throttle and plug it back in and have access to all controls again. I close the software, reload it and they are all greyed out again.

I am trying to test it out in DCS but get no response to thrust and when I move the throttle, the joystick in the cockpit from the rear right to the front left. The webpage for the rhino states is compatible with this game and all aircraft within.

What in Gods name I doing wrong with this?

As I said I have exactly the same issue, and after doing a thorough search on the net there seems to be many others having the same issue as well, all since the last update to the software.

So it is almost certainly the software and/or drivers, and Saitek are yet to respond to my ticket regarding it.

Either way, the joystick still works fine, and any settings you make appear to still work even if the software greys out the sticks again - so it's just a bit of a hassle to program it

I have overcome my stupidity and set the throttle up correctly in the DCS flight sim. And I have to say I love it...... and reinstalled Windows for nothing after all :)

I think because it's so new that there isn't much documentation and there is a note in the FAQ on the saitek website regarding Win8.1 and some odd behavoiur with the throttle. Doesn't effect Win8 though so they're working on it and fixing it.

Once you've set the correct tension spring on the stick and the resistance on the throttle, it's a real nice feel and smooth. Up until and hour ago I was stressing thinking I'd have to return it but it's new to market and has some kinks to iron out but I can see this becoming a very popular controller in Elite and other games.

I use UJR via vJoy in Alpha 4 to merge two toe brake axes on rudder pedals into one.

I've been thinking about getting an X55 for ED, although am a little concerned about some reports of manufacturing/quality issues from here and Amazon.com reviews, so wondering whether to wait a bit for these things to get ironed out.

Once question I have though is regarding the stability of joystick and throttle. I have a glass desk and so am wondering about the underside of these and whether they are going to slide about when I try to use them?

Yep it has a real smooth feel to it, and I have not encountered another joystick with such accuracy, either.

Aleksej, are you able to get programmed mappings working in alpha 4? Alpha 1.1 seems to ignore it entirely. Interested to see if we will be able to program a mapping for landing gears, for example

Both units have 4 circular rubber feet which probably would grip better on glass since it's a smoother surface than on my MDF desk. The throttle has an adjuster for the resistance so you can fine tune it to the point where the base doesn't give if you find it is moving around. Joystick would be very unlikely to move since the point of force comes from the centre of the base.

Currently there are enough buttons on X55 to assign all controls without programmed mappings. I have simply assigned JOY17 to landing gear.

It was easy with throttle when I had it on the table, I have just loosened the spring. As for the joystick it really moved so I had to fix it to the table with double-sided sticky tape.

Buy suction pads off ebay and push them into the mounting holes on each base. You then won't have any issue at all with it gripping on glass.

It's much better made than the X52 Pro, although I still have doubts over the quality of the Saitek products generally. Although mine appears to work fine, one of the rotary switches was very lose out of the box which is disappointing but I'm not convinced that I've got the will to send it back for something so trivial.

Personally I was surprised to find the feet on it actually better at keeping it in place than using the suction cups which the X52 Pro has.

Ah so they're allowing landing gear to be mapped again now? Good

It's mapped on the default binds too which is a bonus! (although bizarrely hyperspace or supercruise aren't on the default bind?)

Which rotary is it? the main one on the top right of the throttle?

It's the one labelled 'RTY 4'

Thought it might have been the F Rotary, mine's got play in it at the centre marker and wiggles round slightly. If you don't get it dead right when resetting it to centre it still has enough play to action itself in game. The one underneath has similar play in it so thinking that's normal but it's a shame when you get something that isn't quite right.

In light of the HOTAS Warthog profile thread ,does anyone have a x-55 profile thread for E : D? I haven't used a joystick since the early 90's and finding it very hard to set this joystick up. :)

No, hyperspace and supercruise aren't on the default bindings, however, I have assigned them to JOY 6/7 (SW 1/2).

But why is a special thread for X55 profile necessary? We have a thread about X55 here. There is default preset profile for X55 in the game. The rest is up to you.

i ordered my x-55 this week, unfortunately it's out of stock everywhere (at least here in austria), my retailer expects his next delivery on 30.05. :(

Preset profile is actually not that bad. I am using custom profile as I got used to it since A3. Here are my controls for Alpha 4 (lateral and vertical thrust on rudder pedals, head look - TrackIR):

Joystick:
JOY1 (trigger) - primary fire/select (interface)
JOY4 (C) - secondary
JOY5 (D) - select target ahead
JOY6 (pinky) - select highest threat
POV - interface menus
JOY11 (H2 up) - divert power to engines
JOY12 (H2 right) - divert power to weapons
JOY14 (H2 left) - divert power to systems
JOY13 (H2 down)- balance power distribution

Throttle:
JOY1 (E) - FA OFF/ON
JOY2 (F) - reverse
JOY3 (G) - boost
JOY4 (H) - cycle to next UI panel (interface)
JOY5 (I)- cycle to previous UI panel (interface)
JOY6 (SW1) - super cruise
JOY7 (SW2) - hyperdrive
JOY8 (SW3) - deploy hardpoints
JOY9 (SW4) - deploy hardpoints (will change if additional controls are required)
JOY10 (SW5) - toggle silent running
JOY11 (SW6) - deploy heat sink
JOY12 (TGL1 up) - rotational correction on/off
JOY13 (TGL1 down) - rotational correction on/off
JOY14 (TGL2 up) - increase sensor range
JOY15 (TGL2 down) - decrease sensor range
JOY16 (TGL3 up) - toggle ship lights
JOY17 (TGL3 down) - toggle landing gear
JOY18 (TGL4 up) - toggle cargo scoop
JOY19 (TGL4 down) - eject all cargo

JOY21 (H3 right) - cycle next subsystem
JOY23 (H3 left) - cycle previous subsystem
JOY25 (H4 right) - cycle next fire group
JOY27 (H4 left) - cycle previous fire group
JOY28 (K1)- cycle previous ship
JOY29 (K1)- cycle next ship
JOY30 (wheel on the left of throttle forward) - cycle next hostile ship
JOY31 (wheel on the left of throttle backward) - cycle previous hostile ship

As I have rudder pedals I do not need to assign thrust up/down/left/right. However, hats on throttle might be used for these purposes.
you're welcome ;)

maybe we can convince the threadstarter / admins to include/link profiles in the first post when pilots share them?

There won't be ideal control scheme. New players might take on ED's default preset (which is not bad), I modify it only because I am using X55 since A2 and I am used to slightly modified controls. Also other controller devices such as TrackIR and rudder pedals affect the controls. Without TrackIR you need to assign controls to look around, focus on UI panels, without rudder pedals you need to bind lateral and vertical thrust controls to HOTAS.

Many Thanks.

Just wanted an idea of a nice profile. Obviously I'll have to try and tie in the vertical/lateral thrusters & POV's, but there's a few Hat's left to urilise.
