Hardware & Technical Saitek x55 rhino

Yeah I just had to send in mine for replacement for this issue. With mine the only time I could get the buttons to work after it failed was when I twisted the stick to the right and held it there.

i have already tried tightening the screws on both the stick and the base plate ... going to call overclockers on friday to see if they have any other advice also ... i do hope it is a power issue ... however, i do find it doubtful as the lights are working on the stick but not the buttons .. is very odd ... lol

Are the button presses recognized in Saitek Software and joy.cpl? Have you tested it on another computer? If you have the issue on both computers you should probably RMA it.

Powered usbhub is basically mandatory. That fixed mine.

That's not so. If you have some issues power USB hub might fix them. I am perfectly fine without any USB hub, X55 is plugged in directly to the USB ports on the mother board.

just tried in my girlfriends computer and no luck .... ah well ... call to overclockers it is then ... thanks for the help guys

the button presses are not registered anywhere ... t'is very frustrating as i just got it this week ... lol

Hey,

If its only the stick, you might want to try removing and reattaching it to the base.

I had it happen that after changing the spring, I reattached it to the base but it wasnt seated properly and consequently the buttons did not work (there are pins on the stick that go in holes in the base or something like that).

Cheers,

Edit: video of how to remove stick (change spring if you want): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLZt56PF0iQ

holy motherfiddling excrement ... that actually worked .. though i had removed the stick and put it back on multiple times, for some reason it worked this time .... thank you so much .... back to my vulture i go ... yay!

All, had several issues with the X55,s (on the third one) and finally everything works.... it seams like they have a lot of quality issues with the first few batches of them. But both the faulty units were RMA'ed without problems.

Just a heads up, was out exploring last night when I lost all control input from my X-55. And I mean all... The unit was still lit up, connected and as it was before the moment it failed.

Thankfully, it failed whilst on slow approach to a planet which was just of centre, so no damage or death. It's getting annoying for me now. I have the thing connected to a dedicated powered usb hub, which in turn is plugged into a usb3 port on the case hard wired into the mobo, still a plethora of issues large and small. The unit keeps on stuttering, failing outright and causing me to have kittens in precarious moments.

Moreover, after checking all the connections, restarting the puter and then logging back on through the launcher, the X-55 is not even recognised as an option, I can't even get Elite to pick up on the mappings, which I assume are now lost. Interestingly the led's on the throttle are lit, but not the stick.

I think the X-55 software is obviously sub-standard, an issue in itself. But the primary issue I think is that the launcher/client really does not like the X-55 either. Rock and a hard place.

I'm going to uninstall/re-install and see if that fixes the issues I'm having, but truth be told, expectations are now through the floor. Has anyone had similar experiences since 1.2, in case a re-install fails too?

For the mid-term can Frontier please get with Mad Catz directly and sort this out please? There are obvious and self-evident issues with integration between the X-55 and Elite.

The mind boggles how many of us are using the Rhino and putting up with this for the sake of game play, and we can only do so much from our end.

Thanks.

I don't think it has anything to do with Elite at all. I don't understand where you get that idea from as it sounds like your flightstick is dead. You can't blame Frontier for you possibly having a faulty unit or computer for that matter.

My best advice, download DCS which is a free flight sim and see if the same issues persist. This will lead you to two possibilities if they do and that is either the flightstick or your computer is at fault. If you have no issues in DCS, then feel free to contact Frontier and air your frustration at them but do keep an open mind that your PC may also be the culprit so ensure you have your hardware specs to hand.

Things to try: You must also ensure that you have installed the very latest USB2 and USB3 drivers from your motherboard or chipset vendor website. If you're just using the default Windows drivers you may not have the best experience such as random key presses and ghosting. FYI I was the one who discovered the fixes for that issue so update your drivers and also disable Legacy USB Support in your bios.

But if as you say that the flightstick itself will not light up then you have a dead unit or a configuration issue on your PC, be it on the hardware or software level. I don't mind trying to help you with this but please don't jump to the conclusion that Frontier are to blame as many of us have a fantastic experience with the X55.

I do. It failed whilst playing Elite for the "happened so many times I've lost count". Other posters in very thread are describing exactly the same issues they are having whilst playing Elite. I've been in dialogue with support since I started playing the game at Christmas about patterns experienced whilst utilising the X55.

Nope it works now. Looks like whatever happened was an incompatibility with the client and the hotas which made something go clunk. FYI, have been using the HOTAS with Xplane for months with no issues what-so-ever. Let's not get all brand aligned and dismiss the premise please.

I'm not having a go at Frontier, I'm simply asking them to get with Mad Catz, compare tickets and sort it out. Remember, however fantastic Elite is, Frontier work for you. They are not your friends...you are allowed to demand a certain level of service, this is perfectly acceptable in the world in which you live. I know the current thinking in power has a lot to answer for with his attitude of "ignore the problem till the plebs forget" but some of us think independently and would like an obvious problem addressed. So let's go Occam's Razor, rather than letting politics get involved shall we?

Marvellous...post your system specs up, along with your dxdiag would be a great help. Maybe then all of us who look at the X55 whilst the client is booting up, wonder how it is going to kill us next, might aspire to be as amazingly happy and blissful as you are.

I most definitely would not be too hasty to jump to any conclusions regarding the joystick and this game.

I am a HUGE fan of Elite but boy at times I do pull my hair out when experiencing very similar issues to those described by that player making the observation.

With me however the Desktop will without warning over-ride the game. I quickly use the mouse to reselect the game but no joystick and no throttle... The keyboard also refuses to work and when pressing a key I simply get a nice 'donk' noise... Sometimes I can press the left mouse key and all will reset... Other times much to my confusion the 'ESC' key MIGHT work and other times it is sadly a case of cntrl, alt. Del :(

I am most definitely NOT blaming Frontier, I just feel there is something going on between my computer, its peripherals and the game, it does not happen in any other game which is annoying as that might help resolve this issue..... I wish this did not happen and I hope it gets fixed but I am not shouting at anyone as it is 'just one of those things' :(

If the stick stops responding and the PC won't recognise the device but recognises others then something is effecting your machine at the system level in Windows.

Glojo, I have had the issue with Elite minimising as well and it's effected by a program that is trying to take focus on the desktop. Mine was caused by having Nvidia control panel open so you may wan't to check your running apps and disable some temporarily until you find out what's causing it. Also might be worth checking for viruses.

Could you please both post your system specs including PSU rating and I'll try to help. For the record this is mine:

AMD FX 8350 at stock
Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3
Corsair 750w PSU
2 x Nvidia GTX970
BenQ XL-2720Z connected with Displayport
At time of playing I have the X55 plugged in to two USB3 ports on the front of the case, Sound through either the on board realtek or via the Nvidia cards if playing on the TV, a Saitek Cyborg Keyboard and Logitec G300 mouse, XBone controller and the Nvidia 3dVision IR transmitter. So I have a fair amount of USB peripherals connected and have no issues whatsoever. I did however have a multitude of issues until I updated the USB2 & 3 drivers and disabled USB Legacy Support. Those two changes were key to making the X55 work without issue. Your Windows Device Manager under the Universal Serial Bus Controllers should explicitly list a USB3 host controller.

Shiny, nice one ZZR600. I'll post up the dets midweek if that's okay. In an ill fated attempt to upgrade all my usb drivers yesterday, I'm locked out of the big puter. Waiting for a PS2 adapter to turn up in the post.... ;-)

Okay, back online...good news is after taking extensive action, throttle works fine, stick is now deader than a space dodo.

Here's my system dets...

AMD Phenom II X4 955 at stock
Asus M5A97 R2.0 AM3+ AMD 970 DDR3
32GB RAM
Corsair 750w PSU
2 x Nvidia GTX750 Titanium
3x 24" Dell Monitors
Win 7 Ultimate
X55 plugged in to two powered USB2 ports through an external hub and into a USB3 on the mobo
Sound through either the on board realtek or via the Nvidia cards if playing on the TV
Stock Microsoft Wireless Keyboard and Mouse

Last few days I have updated all USB2 & 3 drivers, flashed the bios to latest and updated all ASUS CPU Management to latest.

Stick dead, throttle works.

Ok, I've actually read a few instances over the weekend following our initial posts similar to this. It's a long shot but try unscrewing the stick from it's base, ensure there's no dust or particles in-between the terminals and then screw it back on. It may just not be making a good connection or could even be loose in the first place.

If the computer chimes when you plug in the stick as it is right now though,it is being recognized and is possibly just that connection problem between the screw clamp on the unit itself.

A bit of advice to try. In my experience the x55 doesn't like a usb3 port. Try again with usb2.

Mine do like them USB 3.0 ports. Not a single problem with the ones behind the computer, directly on the motherboard. Well, not a problem until I broke the rudder axis last week... :D
