Zoo Entrance - Terrace lagoon

The final portion of the zoo entrance area is now complete, i now have regular videos for building which will make the project even more exciting. This completes the east portion of the front street for now, the main focus will be towards the discovery outpost area where we can see a whole ton of reptiles!

Featuring 2 large buildings - 1 staff building and one event building and a short nature path around this pool of water or lagoon as we can call it. I wont say much today i think, lets just enjoy the pictures:

Entrance Habitat - Flamingo Lagoon

Its animal time for the san diego zoo! We welcome a bunch of flamingos to front street as the entrance is pretty much complete now. Either called the flamingo habitat or the flamingo lagoon, a flamingo pool habitat surrounded by tropical foliage welcomes guests into the zoo. There is a viewpoint along front street or get a closer look on the start of the monkey trail that will eventually climb into the trees.

If anyone couldnt tell by now, i have restarted using the nvidia photo mode to take screenshots. While i didnt need it that much for the entrance, animal pictures basically need the lighting and zoom abilities with all this dense foliage about.

Discovery Outpost - Reptile House

Moving from the front street entrance area to the more exciting Discovery Outpost habitat area, the first major sight of outpost is the Klauber-Shaw Reptile House. The reptile house is a spanish themed/influenced building containing a basic setup of a rectangle of reptile exhibits, thats by no meaning that the detail put into the reptile building is low effort, quite the opposite.

One of the largest exhibit areas i have actually built, the building is 42 x 30 metres fitting 19 exhibit boxes around its interior. The building is 'open air' where we have mesh grid in each of the archways allowing for a nice tropical feel to the building. Lets have a tour of the reptile house then:

Discovery Outpost - Komodo Kingdom

Right next to the reptile house along front street is a modern komodo dragon habitat. Called the Komodo Kingdom, this is one of the most recent additions to the real life zoo, opening in 2021. While not that large habitat for the dragons, the habitat itself with the modern architecture is an impressive sight, especially compared to the much older reptile house next door.

This may be a familar sight to those who were familar with the version 1 of the san diego zoo, this version actually is bigger and almost half the piece count due to the roof using a more uniform shape and larger pieces. I still dont like using the caiman statue though, wish we had a komodo dragon statue or even a sign.

Discovery Outpost - Reptile Walk - Giant Tortoises

Moving north of the reptile house we have an area called the reptile walk. The reptile walk is the main reptile area for the zoo featuring giant tortoises, chinese alligator, gharial, and even more reptile exhibit boxes. There will also be 'static' leopard tortoise, black throated monitor and iguana habitats. HABITAT IGUANAS the pain!

The giant tortoise habitats feature 2 habitats for galapagos tortoise and aldabra tortoise, the aldabra tortoise should be african spurred tortoise as noted by my custom sign for the smaller habitat. Lots of faux rocks, cactus and sand resemble a california desert (i think thats what the general theme is). If not too obvious, the habitat is on a slope from the map level down 6 metres so that means half of the reptile walk is on a slope while it does flatten out at the bottom.

Discovery Outpost - Reptile Walk

The first major milestone for the zoo is now complete! The discovery outpost featuring the reptile house, komodo kingdom, hummingbird habitat, wegeforth bowl and the reptile walk are now all complete with lots of reptiles to see throughout. This is not the end for the reptiles as they are spread through pretty much most of the zoo but the main bulk of reptile sights are featured in the discovery oupost. We have seen the reptile house, komodo kingdom, and the giant tortoise habitat in the reptile walk so lets take a look at the rest.

A minor sight next to the komodo kingdom is the hummingbird habitat which is in a very similar building style of the komodo kingdom but features flying hummingbirds in real life, of course its just a static scenic walkthrough in the recreation because 1. we dont have hummingbirds ingame and they are so tiny and 2. even if they came to the game the glass barriers and walk in the habitat would be conflicting with the walkthrought exhibit. I forgot to take a picture of it ingame but the tour video shows it off .

Next up is the wegeforth bowl, an outdoor amphitheater which showcases animal ambassadors in daily shows. I managed to find this san diego promotion video which plays on the large screen adding at least some sort of atmosphere to this static area. Those wondering, the walkthrough netting mesh was used as the overhead canopies.

Past the wegeforth bowl is the final area of the discovery outpost which is the reptile walk, there are 2 entrances here. One to the left follows the main path past the giant tortoise habitats while the marked entrance follows a boardwalk into another small reptile building before rejoining onto the main path.

Chinese Alligator Habitat is up next with some spectatled caimans. Why these caimans and not american alliagators? Because the chinese alligator is just 5 ft / 1.5 metres in length compared to the much larger female american alligator at 9.8 ft / 3 metres. The spectatled caiman is a perfect fit for the chinese alligator with its size at 6.5 ft / 2 metres.

After the chinese alligator habitat, we can join the main path which brings us to the giant tortoise habitat or continue downhill to the turtle building. The empty habitat featured in the below picture is i think for some small tortoises or a monitor. They are decorated like the habitat is and left empty as the layout here wouldnt be suitable for a animal ingame.

In the turtle building we have a really diverse selection of tutle exhibits. We have a choice of diamondback terrapin on the left and diamondback terrapin on the right!

Leaving the turtle building then brings us to the last habitat of reptile walk and of discovery outpost. The gharial pool is a large and impressive habitat with lots of viewing for guests.

Discovery Outpost - Skyfari Station

With the discovery outpost complete, lets start the next area in the southern portion of the zoo. Opened in just 2022, the modern Wildlife Explorers Basecamp is the new childrens zoo for san diego zoo with lots of colorful and interactive areas spread throughout. We can expect 8 new habitats and even more exhibit boxes in 2 detailed interior buildings. The piece count for this area will be really high to correctly represent the scope of the basecamp as one of the most unique childrens zoos around.

The basecamp area starts with 2 additions this time around, one is a gondola station for the zoo's skyfari ride and the second is the basecamp entrance building. The skyfari ride is of course using the game's insanely huge gondola transport which brings quite the challenge to correctly represent the skyfari while not looking too out of place. The skyfari stations will be much larger than real life and even the track for the gondola is way too big. The real gondola ride just uses a simple cable rather than the rollercoaster like track ingame.

Issues of the gondola ride explains itself pretty much. Custom made supports and the skyfari station makes the gondola just a tiny bit more bearable to use:

As the skyfari ride is a point to point ride, the station has a tight loop to return gondolas to the starting postion. The tracks are double width for the entire ride:

The next addition is the wildlife explorers basecamp entrance. This is a eyecatching entrance to the modern childrens zoo with a large flashy sign, leafcutter ants above and the use of modern renewable materials to highlight conservation. We can also see the stroller parking for the skyfari to the left of the below image:

Now the below image highlights 2 important parts of the entrance:

1. The skyfari station features an entirely custom made roof made from colored wooden slats to match the roof pattern in real life. This is quite difficult to build especially the shorter ends.
2. The entrance building features restrooms hidden from plain sight, the blocked sightlines from the guests perspective adds so much more realism than one usually thinks of ingame. This is the only restroom for the entire discovery outpost area part of the zoo. The closest other ones are located way back at the sandwich company cafe at the entrance.

Wildlife Explorers Basecamp - Busy Bee Cafe & Plaza

I do question my methods of going full detail at times with my computer silently staring at me each time i make custom roofs but here we are! The basecamp continues to consume so many pieces to bring the modern childrens zoo to life, today we have 3 major additions to look at: The Busy Bee Cafe, basecamp plaza, and the family center scenery building (city or zoo educational building).

First up is the busy bee cafe which is a full interior built cafe with glass walls, a modern custom roof and even more wooden slats to make a cool decorative wall inside. Got to be one of my most detailed cafe builds yet since i typically avoid doing interiors since it can be rather difficult ingame to represent how an interior really feels like in real life but it actually came out quite good.

Away from the cafe, we have the plaza area for seating. 2 sculptures of a toad and lizard greet guests on the outside of the plaza, while lots of picnic tables placed throughout the area allow for plenty seating for the busy bee cafe. A desert theme for foliage is spread through the plaza since we are in the themed area of 'desert dunes'. The desert dunes area will be making an appearance later on where habitat animals will be featured in the lower level of the basecamp.

Wildlife Explorers Basecamp - Spineless Marvels Insect House

Finally getting into animals at the basecamp, the first section is a large building called Spineless Marvels. Spineless marvels is an insect house with lots of modern designs inside, however ingame the space allowed by the exhibit box allowed 2 , YES 2 EXHIBIT BOXES. I planned to have at least 6 boxes but the limitations of a real building and the exhibit box doesnt really work well together.

Conservation slats make a reapperance for the roof. Basically mimics the real roof design which would be great if we got a similar flexicolor roof like this ingame:

The side of the spineless marvels building has angled panelling which was a challenge to figure out at first:

Stepping inside, we come across a curved butterfly screen. Trying to make a half globe media screen was difficultand did not come out as planned:

The central room next features a small lab, kids interactive table, microscopes and the second exhibit box - the tiger snail:

The final room of the spineless marvels is a beehive themed room. A simple beehive formation and some custom media screens with swarming bees to mimic some bees kept in these boxes.

Not the easiest or most appealing building i have built but i hope the second reptile house which is upcoming in the basecamp will hopefully look better than this.

Wildlife Explorers Basecamp - Rainforest

Behind the large spineless marvels building, the wildlife explorers basecamp features the first animal habitats for the area. These are about average sized habitats for binturong and caracal themed in a rainforest setting. In real life there are 3 habitats which the missing habitat would be southern tamandua but for space requirements to work with climbable habitats, i added just 2. The mod for the tamundua is basically just an anteater removing the ability to climb which is needed for these kind of habitats.

The below overhead picture shows the layout of the rainforest portion of the basecamp. There is an overhead walkway (which is ground level to the rest of the zoo) with the lower portion of the basecamp clearly marked out now - its about 5 or so metres down. Stairs from the entrance of the spineless marvels allows quick access to the lower portion. The coolest part of this area is actually this snake which follows the overhead pathway into the next area - the cool critters reptile house.

Exiting the spineless marvels, we enter onto the overhead walkway. Stairs to our left or follow the walkway to view the habitats straight ahead:

The first habitat is the caracal habitat, custom climbing frames and the scenery of a rainforest floor is the main theme of the rainforest area. Yes the mesh is rather annoying to view from but thats how real zoos do it:

The second habitat will be the binturong habitat which is actually a little smaller than the caracal but the open like layout makes it feel larger from the guest perspective:

Head down those stairs and we get to the lower portion of the basecamp:

Wildlife Explorers Basecamp - Cool Critters Reptile House

We enter the central portion of the wildlife explorers basecamp now, this is home to 3 areas. We will be looking at the 2 of these areas today, the first is the Cool Critters reptile house and second is Marsh meadows. The cool critters reptile house joins from the rainforest area where the binturong and caracal are seen, the reptile house is made of 2 levels and features 7 exhibit boxes - much better than the pitiful 2 exhibit boxes in the spineless marvels insect house. The Marsh Meadows area is outside and features a dwarf crocodile habitat and a scenery pond which features some pond turtles in real life. Lets start the tour then:

Leaving the rainforest section and entering the upper level of the Cool Critters Reptile House

Inside we are greeted with a green iguana exhibit and an anaconda exhibit ahead, the exit is past the anaconda:

Between the first exhibits mentioned we also find the central area of the upper level, another iguana exhibit and boa can be found:

Exiting the upper level and enter the amabassador area:

The ambassador area is where daily talks are held with a selected animal from backstage, animals in the rainforest area are ambassador animals on display for guests to see:

My favourite view of the basecamp is right next to the ambassador area, we are overlooking the marsh meadow area outside the cool critters reptile house. I can tell you now this WAS NOT EASY. A path split by 2 bodies of water and requiring glass windows into the inside of the reptile house:

Returning to the lower level of the basecamp, we can access the marsh meadows here:

On the left side of the path, we can see a small dwarf crocodile habitat (those are dwarf caimans in there in case someone thinks im showing off mods on the forum):

Wildlife Explorers Basecamp - Desert Dunes

We talked about 2 of the central parts of the basecamp, today we can look at the third area we did not cover last week. That final area is the Desert Dunes, here we can find 2 desert themed habitats for fennec fox and prairie dog. These are slightly on the small side and tucked into the space available between the cool critters reptile house and the upper level of the basecamp.

Overview of Desert Dunes, habitats can be found easily by the black rooftop while the guest paths and kids climbing area is to the left next to the spineless marvels building:

From spineless marvels, we can see the slope up towards the upper level (or ground level of the zoo). Simple climbing ropes help kids scramble their way to the top:

On the left side of the desert dunes habitat complex, prairie dogs can be seen in a small rocky habitat. This is pushing what the smallest possible habitat space is available since its way below normal requirements. Also its the first time i have actually found a use for those weird 3D printed walls from the conservation pack, the flexicolor helps mimic a rock wall:

Wildlife Explorers Basecamp - Wild Woods & Basecamp Overview

The basecamp is complete! The last area of the basecamp features modded animals only (no mods present in this post) so i didnt think it would make sense to make a seperate post on that. So lets go over what the basecamp features and the final result of this months effort of the last portion of the discovery outpost portion of san diego zoo.

Overview of the basecamp, here we can see how complex the area is. The red rock area at the bottom is the new 'wild woods' portion of the basecamp:

Located between spineless marvels and cool critters, we can find habitats for caracal and binturong in the rainforest area:

On the furthest side of wild woods, we can find a squirrel monkey habitat:

And on the other side, there is a south american coati habitat. The bridge seen on the overview is directly on our left:

Inside the coati habitat, i found the african branches to be great for natural climbing frames that work for all animals:

Back on top of that bridge, we see the overview of the cool critters building and marsh meadows. A dwarf crocodile habitat can be found below:

Australian Outback Overview

Welcome to the outback! With the oceania pack perfectly timed, lets start a new area by heading along front street past the terrace lagoon and entering the Australian Outback. The outback is defined by 3 key habitats - tasmanian devil, common wombat (or a second devil habitat) and koalas. Heres a map of the area to show us what we can expect:

1. Devils, Wombats and Birds - Here we can find 2 habitats (one each for tasmanian devil and wombat) and 2 aviaries featuring australian birds such as kookaburra, zebra finch and gouldian finch.
2. Sydney's Shoppe and Grill - The plaza area for the australian outback features a gift shop (Sydneys Shoppe) and a cafe (Sydneys Grill). Outside the cafe we have seating for guests, the main front street road where the bus tour road joins on to. The front street intersection as we can see leads us to the urban jungle to the left or continue onwards on front street to africa rocks above.
3. Koala House - A queensland style house provides room for staff with boardwalks on the exterior for guests to see san diego's very own koala colony. It is said to be the largest in north america. The koala habitats are divided into male and female habitats with parma wallaby hopping on the habitat floor while the koalas hang in the trees. When koala can be found above, these will be eyelevel to our guests.

This will likely be a 4-6 part area with one part already covering half of section 1. That's todays topic! Lets take a look at this new area, keeping in mind this area is a work in progress (the backgrounds and such, not the finished the devil habitat).

We first come across to the first aviary. Of course the birds are static but these kind of aviaries makes up a HUGE part of san diego zoo. Static birds from the workshop and those audio speakers with the bird sounds is the best we will get:

Australian Outback - Aviaries & Wombats

Completing section one of the australian outback is another australian aviary and a wombat habitat. That means the section one area is fully complete with the addition of a tasmanian devil habitat, common wombat habitat and 2 static australian aviaries. The wombat habitat meets the minimum size requirements despite its smaller size and overgrown appearance.

Before the tasmanian devil habitat, we can now clearly see the second aviary and the indoor shelter dividing both habitats. Sadly neither of the animals seem to actually want to sleep in the shelters:

Birds like zebra finches and rosellas can be found in the second aviary, yes i know there is no roof. Adding a mesh roof would make the appearance of the aviaries look weird when curved shapes like this occur:

Beside the indoor shelter, we get a nice info board explaining what a marsupial is. After all every habitat animal featured in the outback is a marsupial:

The road to completion:

We have seen plenty of closeup pictures of all these new areas of the zoo for 3 months or so now, but how exactly does the zoo look from above and how close is the zoo to the final product? Well lets introduce the road to completion, every so often i will make a post showing what the zoo looks like from above, show what episodes (referring to the episodes uploaded on youtube) have been completed and how many exactly are left until i can call the san diego zoo complete. Lets jump into it then:

Direct above picture of the zoo, that sizeable parking lot is only half of the size of the real one. Obviously due to map size limitations only half is represented:
