SC Flightmodel Discussion

I don't see a problem enjoying both games fully; they are different but both are great for different reasons.

There is no "them" and "us". That's simply childish.

There are simply two great space based games, reminding me of the original greats that I played as a kid and even back then started thinking "What if one day..." and that one day seems to be closer and closer to being realised for both of them.

I just want to make the point that you've called SC "great" twice despite the fact that nobody who backed it has ever actually played it. Not being facetious, but that is part of the problem I have with the more vocal of SC backers. They make claims for their game that are simply impossible to substantiate when you consider that no playable space flight (edit: within SC) has even been released to anybody, yet.

Referring to OP -"SC we have nothing to fear" and the premise for the thread. I'm not wading through 10 pages of it, I'm about to go play FD single player instead.

don't think mobius is sh*tting on SC in his OP. again he is voicing concerns as a backer of both games.

One small problem with G-forces in space ... the G stands for gravity.
You get G-force from gravity, and there is no gravity in space, unless it's articially made. There are two ways to do that, 1) spin, suchs as the stations do in ED. 2) Handwavium. It's a McGuyver ... it's just "there" and not explained, something Frontier decided wasn't acceptable.

This is the point where you should really read up on G-forces before making more posts. :D

To me personally Star Citizen represents (perfectly) the childhood memory of watching Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica, and dreaming that I could fly in space and have a big space battle like in these movies..

I believe that this memory is also what made people crowdfund the game by 40 million.

SC was my First KS, and up until this video I had high hopes, visually SC is very pleasing but on seeing the Video I have now lost hope for the game.

the flight model is very similar to Chris's earlier games and for me this is not a good thing and is 20 years out of date.

I may be alone in this, but I hope the SC flight model is NOT changed to be more like ED, even though from what I can tell from the SC videos, I prefer the feel of ED's at this point. I'd rather the games feel different, representing the distinct visions of their creators.

None of Chris other games had Newtonian physics, None of them allowed you to fly backwards..so i'm really not seeing any way SC could be similar to his old games here.

But i wonder .. have you also lost hope in FD's flight model then since it must be very similar to the 1984 elite game which would make it 30 years out of date by your measurements?

Up until a few hours ago, I'd never played FD either, I still called it great, and it is.

SC will be great also, but in a different way and for different reasons.

I am glad i put most of my money into Elite Dangerous. The more i learn about Star Citizen, the less interrested i become. I will probably play them both, but i feel pretty sure i will spend most of my time with Elite Dangerous and even Limit Theory than Star Citizen. Everytime i see a video of Star Citizen,i think about military, not space....

A huge advantage Star Citizen has is dedicated and authorized servers.. I don't even want begin to think of what hackers might do with ED and its p2p networking..

This is a big fear i have for both games - FD has p2p and SC is a Cryengine game which in the past have been infested with hackers (Crysis 2/3 was both nearly unplayable online due to hackers runing everything).

Though CIG is writing their own netcode for SC so perhaps that will help.

Chris Roberts mentions in the video we are discussing how they will address hackers in the game. That's what the authorized servers are all about.

Thing is elite Had it right the first time around. CR games were driven buy story and not flight models. so while Wing commander had a fun storyline the flight model was and still is a very much up,down left, right affair.

yeah the up,down, roling left, roling right makes the FD flight model far more modern..somehow..i guess.:S

SC is waaaaay to "X-Factor" for me. "The Next Great Starship" is unwatchable for that reason.

Even when I first saw Wing Commander it had no appeal to me at all. Elite on the BBC model B looked better and more realistic and in depth, and WC was on the Amiga!

SC's gameplay lost it for me the moment I saw there was a flight mode playable in external view. FE2 had external views but not this chasecam stuff. FE2 was not playable in 3rd person mode, it was good for sightseeing only, as it should be in a space sim. With 3rd person mode in a space sim your immersion is gone, straight off. I wanted something that has some level of immersion of being a pilot, not some remake of Starfox.

But really, it is the "cheese" that is putting me off. The fanboys, those who sneer "well, Elite Dangerous is nowhere near SC in scope" when they clearly know very little about it, the cringeworthy "Killian"-style, OTT presenting of "Wingman's Hangar"...ugh.

Sorry, I know most ppl are trying to keep it positive and "live and let live" and all that. This is just my opinion: I've no real interest in ever playing SC and their OTT "gameshow" style and some of their more fanatical fans have frankly put me off for good.

Plus there is Mack's argument too

I feel the same way about it, I was dissapointed at the flight mechanics of it, hopefully in later builds maybe it will become better, one other thing I thought chris roberts voice was really annoying shock horror

Overall I see DFM coming out as good sign - I am very tired of hearing comparisions built on promises. Now games in their development can be compared more objectively.

Yeah I think this is one of the best things about this showing at Pax, it does get old hearing people try to compare the two.

It looks like a very ambitious project, with the bar set a bit higher than the readiness of the presentation. Loved the enthusiasm of the crowd. I wish them all the best, even as I'm gonna stay here.

Ironically the Wing Commander series almost played better the crappier the graphics got. That was not meant as a statement towards the present effort mind you. :)
