Scanner debacle

I appreciate all the responses, but I wish some of the more veteran players would take a big step back and look at the amount of key binding and non-sensical trouble shooting this game has come to amass. Now imagine yourself as a new or casual player. It's not right.

I would have thought that this being a British game it would have had more focus on consistency and logic. FD not being able to supply full, working control templates/presets for the game and the controllers the game supports is just appalling.
Well it's not CoD, right? :)

Fortunately we do not have to imagine anything, we can just hop over to the newcomers forum and see what they have to say about it. And luckily for you, we have a new player introducing himself this very day!

I bought the game (Horizons) a week or so ago and have put in about 10 hours. I love it so far; it's unlike any other game I have ever played. [...] The graphics are stunning, and the control layout is a masterclass in simplicity.
Cheers

Well what can I say. I'm happy for you and CainelsCarter. It hasn't changed my opinion though.

In a nutshell, I manage to get all my "scanners" in one FG.

I have the Composition scanner on Fire 1 and the DSS on Fire 1.
I have the Data scanner and System scanner (honk) on Fire 2.

The DSS only works in SC so it doesn't interfere with the Composition scanner.
The Data scanner doesn't work in SC so it never interferes with the System Scanner and if I'm using the Data scanner to scan, say, a data-point then I'll get a "honk" at the same time, which isn't a big deal.

If I want to FSS stuff properly, I have to press a different button to access it but, meh.
This isn't meh, it's excellent. Thanks.

I presume that you've assigned "the honk" to Fire 2 in the FSS key bindings section as well, to keep things "consistent"?

I have the FSS "Discovery Scan" set to a different key (Enter) just because in the FSS I am using my controls differently (i.e. my secondary fire buttons are not in immediate reach as my right hand is using the keyboard for zoom controls whilst the tuning and window movement is done on the throttle by my left hand). This only needs to be used if you have not "honked" your disco scanner before going into the FSS mode, which is not often I find.

Sort of.

All my FSS controls (the ones I use, at least) are on my mouse (a Logitech G501).

Mouse 1: Target object.
Mouse 2: Honk.
Mouse 3: Zoom in
Mouse 4: Zoom out.
Mouse wheel: Scanner tuning.
Mouse movement: Move around map.

I'm in the process (it'll get done eventually) of building a USB "button box" which'll support all my secondary controls in ED and I plan to also fit it with a little mini-joystick (out of a gamepad), a potentiometer and buttons specifically for the FSS.
