Scrap or redesign shield cell modules, they are too overpowered and trivialize PvP.

Recently someone mentioned the idea to build shield cells around the general energy management concept, in that they need to slowly reload after use. I like this idea

Can only see this confusing people

Obvious statement is bloody obvious. Player equipped specifically for killing other players is going to win against someone who isn't...

Oh, so PVP should come down to exclusively how you're geared? What a farce. If I'm interdicted by an average player loaded up with shield cells and I'm a multipurpose craft with more skill than he, I should be able to beat his advantage.

The advantage should be surmountable. This was supposed to be a game about skill, not WoW.

Balance was fine before the introduction of shield cells. All shield cells have done is needlessly upset that balance with an arcady MMO trope.

How is this more laughable than the way shield cells exist now?
It's meant as a compromise at best, personally my vote would be to scrap them, anyway.

Changing the mechanics isn't a compromise, and would likely take a long time to test and rollout. Limiting them to one per ship (with either keeping the variety of classes or fixing them to one class), or nerfing them to single use (but not limiting the number you can have) is far more likely to see the light of day.

I'd scrap them too btw. Buff the bigger ships so they're not a piece of cake to take down, and it would benefit all, and give pve a shot in the arm. Shield cells were clearly implemented to give unskilled players a chance, and now that they've learned the ropes, let's get rid of the training wheels.

I want them gone but only because I hate the idea that my ship is drinking a 'health potion'.

That or they should deal significant hull and/or subsystem damage to use without ammo, and ammo is very expensive.

Make it so they have a 1 in 100 chance of exploding.

Or a 1 in 100 of NOT exploding :p

Would you expect to be able to best every ship in the game in a Sidewinder?

If you had the skill to stay in it's blind-spot and the precision to KEEP hitting it's shield to wear it down, yes. It should just be very difficult.

This is why Carriers carry fast, light ships, and not heavily-armoured bombers, to defend them. Small ships DO have an advantage against big ones, an advantage that Shield Cells arbitrarily help remove.

or better yet don't go into a pvp match with a pve setup. its easy enough to 1 shot shielding. waaa i cant gank the trader because he specked to not be ganked.

In a well-equipped Sidewinder, yes, I think I should definitively have the chance, if we're talking about ships of the size that players can control. Against something like a Cutter, I think that the difference in power would be so huge that it would require a ridicilously incompetent Cutter pilot to loose to a Sidewinder, but technically, yes, I think a Sidewinder should be capable of besting every player-controlled ship in the game.

Yes, if they're significantly more skilled than the pilot they're up against, then yes. Why is this controversial? I think the bigger ships need a buff, but shield cells are the sloppiest way of balancing this sort of disparity.

It's not always voluntary you know. 'its easy enough to 1 shot shielding' is not an arguement for keeping them either.

The other two points I'd like to raise;

1 - The idea that PvE and PvP should be separate fits is an archaic one that stems from more traditional MMO/Videogame styles. Elite is trying to be it's own thing. I would also argue if you're the kind of person that engages a so-called 'PvE-fit' ship in PvP and you brought shield cells with you, then I would question exactly WHY you're even bothering.

2 - Using the logic ''A sidewinder should not be able to beat an Anaconda'', I hereby request that FD makes the Capitl ship encounters invincible and unbeatable. After all, they are huge, so they should definitely win. Doesn't matter if the small ship pilots are better at taking out vital subsystems, their ships are smaller.

the only change they do need is the amount they give a e rated should be be totally refilling shielding i agree but if you have class a i have no issue with it because you only get 5 class a.

Actually this isn't a bad idea but it needs to be something other than just exploding. Shield cells must expend astronomical amounts of energy when activated so they can recharge your shields so quickly. This process should really generate vast quantities of heat unless the module is shielded a lot more effectively than the main drive of the ship.

there just crying because they cant run in and kill all the traders with there cheap fits its because they can boost and run away. if fools like this got there way not a single trader would ever go into open play anymore then the cry thread on solo mode.

No, I'm crying because I haven't died in combat once since I started using shield cells, and how it makes a host of weapons and ship outfitting obsolete in combat, which were formally well balanced prior to the introduction of a ridiculous module that shifts the balance overwhelmingly to shields.

Think about it. Shields received a massive buff, on a cobra almost multiplying their effectiveness by THIRTY TIMES if you load it out like that. Comparatively, NO OTHER WEAPON OR MODULE was buffed in accordance with that.

Funny. Despite my two shield cells and double chaff, I just got killed. Because the other player knew what he was doing. He had fixed heavy weapons and had my shields down so fast and my thrusters destroyed so quick shield cells were useless.

That's how you deal with shield cells. By being good, not by complaining.

Shield cells don't 'buff' shields, they partially recharge them provided they are not down.

Perhaps if traders were more squishy we wouldn't be seeing so many threads bemoaning how that profession outstrips all others.

Or I can play in solo. Or kill my process when I'm loosing, like a complete jerk.
This thread isn't about winning. Not mainly, at least...

Well, he should've taken you down even quicker. You obviously didn't possess the skills to fend him off. You say 'despite' and yet argue for keeping them. "They're useless! Let's keep them!"

It's about how cells stop people from 'winning' easily. Cells are only over-powered to people who don't seem willing or able to learn how to fight properly.
