For what it's worth, I think the effect wouldn't be there in camera in real life. If these were "miniature" models, yes. For the real life sizes and distances of these capital ships and stations however, any practical combination of camera, lens focal length, aperture, and subject distance needed to shoot them would give an infinite DoF behind the subject (the capital ship), so the station in the background would always be in focus.
