Seems like frontier actually doesn't want everyone to have a carrier.. for technical reasons?

I thought they were meant to be fleet carriers, not mobile shops.
My bad.
The 'they were meant for player groups' specualtion at least makes sense of the insane running costs. Even so that could have been changed so easily.

Really FCs need a clear reason to exist- a defined role. So far I can't see one thats truly transformational.

Once. And then your rig melts.

Just to spoon in another franchise, Death Blossom FC mode?

The ultimate log- destroys your PC, and all ships in 10 Ly.

Look at the bright side. Soon there will be bots and trainer options to automate all this nonsense. And the past already showed us frontier is really reactive when it comes to exploits and cheats. It's a virtuous circle, really.

Just looking at a thread about surface bases and it occurs to me...

If the ED engine is going to be pushed to near it's limits with the advent of persistent FCs, creating a need for punitive deterrents to regulate the number of FCs in-game, that's not a good omen for future expansions.

I mean, if the ED servers are going to be "running hot" as a result of adding FCs, that doesn't leave a lot of wiggle-room for a few thousand surface bases, or for stations with interiors you can walk around, or planets that have weather systems, flora and fauna or gas giants with enormous, thick, atmospheres etc.

Upkeep = Frontier Technical Reason Tax.

At this point I'm wondering if they should have released the Panther Clipper and called it a day. Seems like less hassle all around, for everyone, if they'd done that.

I think this theory needs to be tested and it behooves us all to purchase a fleet carrier as soon as they go live.

Unless this is a double bluff, and FD actually want us all to have FCs so we are forced to keep playing every day to keep up with costs!

Have you seen the state of the system map in Diso? It's insanity.

From everything that's happened so far.. the only possible reason for fleet carriers being the way they are is that due to technical issues, frontier actually don't want there to be too many fleet carriers around.

Steven B implies that they know the system will break if.. fleet carrier numbers push the system in some load condition.. but also that they aren't planning to (or cant?) fix the issues, because they're balancing it so it won't happen? Why would it not be realistic for everyone to have one? We're all going in with the exact opposite assumption.. that everyone will get one because carriers are for us. Or "the extreme edge cases" that they aren't going to handle actually are not edge cases...
Hey @CMDR Karrde Sun,

Sorry if there's been any misunderstanding here! The cost of the Fleet Carriers in the beta is to reflect the actual cost of a Fleet Carriers when they go into the live game in June. There is currently no technical issue known with everyone owning one, and in this beta we were trying to focus on reviewing the affect that Fleet Carriers will have when they enter the live game. Naturally, since they are an end game goal, not everyone would potentially get one at launch but certainly over time we hope that many Commanders get the chance to own their very own Fleet Carrier!

Blimey!

If it's not a means of mitigating a technical issue, that only leaves one other possibility.

Not entirely sure that's something people are going to be especially happy to hear.
