Probably the best sci-fi series of all time IMO, but Fox aired the shows in the 'Friday night death slot' and they also aired them out of order. At least they got to make the film to finish things off.

Fox also fought Whedon tooth and nail about the most minute of plot points, and the literature published about the behind the scenes stuff hints that they became more forceful as the series continued.

Above all though, Fox screwed up the marketing. They initially pushed it as a goofy/wacky comedy (they used Smashmouth for the original promos, :):):)!), because they were afraid that anything that showed the actual dark tones of the show would drive viewers away - when in reality, it created a lot of confusion for those watching the first episodes, because they were expecting a different show entirely. Imagine if it had been marketed at it's actual target audience! All those passionate fans would have been on board and invested far earlier.

All the subsequent screw ups were just more nails in the coffin.

Many people seem hesitant about dumping the blame solely at the shuffling feet of Fox execs (and there probably were lots of other factors that contributed to the show's demise), but pretty much every piece written about it shows that Fox really did drop the ball.

I really do miss that show. It made the whole space cowboy thing seem so awesome, believable, and human.

Time for another firefly marathon!

The series Fire Fly is one of those gems and mysteries in life. a brilliant series but why'd it get canned after just one series?????????????

Almost certainly because one of the central characters was a prostitute, the Cpt was her pimp and the ship was being used, essentially as a space brothel.

Life is hard on the edge of civilized space...

Nearly choked on my drink .. or what ever .. when after a long speach to the captured thug/henchman #1 .. who promptly vented death and retribution on the crew... the captain booted 'im into the engine.. then turned to captured thug #2 and started the speach again.. really got the thug #2's full attention.

..priceless

Watched all 12 episodes and the movie.

Courtesan... akin to a high geisha
And the captain(sargeant) relegated to a purely a taxi service.. who could claim it was a limo because of the quality of the people being transported.. which included a skilled Doctor and a Shepherd (spiritual teacher)... ... and a crazy phychic physical adept... amongst others

Call it what you will. It's still a prostitute.

I have to say the inclusion of a Dr with a rather overly good surgery was a bit lame for me personally. But I'm sure that with the legacy of Startrek with hundreds of crew being ably cared for by a single Dr who's hair was never out of place and who's clothes were never covered in blood makes that little convenience a space necessity.

The plot was really quite good, even if it was another US rip off of Blakes 7, but it failed because it tried to be too many things. Prostitutes are not for kids. A swash-buckling space cowboy opera with side arms and bitten outlaws is....

Moving to off topic now :)

Hah, i was wondering where it went to :) I think it does a good job of showing where elite can go though. The show shows how many people could crew a ship of that size - I think FD will be making a mistake if they dont add NPC crew at some point and even though I wouldnt expect the crew to Joss Whedon ready it could really add some personality to the game ( which I believe they are already doing by adding portraits to the contacts in space stations). The framework is in place for FPS of some type in the form of planetary bases, who is to say down the road we wouldnt have a 'Jane' type character? Also I'd love to be able to AV a salvageable wreck in space :)

So I started watching the last ship. Really good so far and the ship dimensions are slightly smaller than the anaconda. In the show it has a crew of over 200 and has numerous tactical capabilities

A little late to the discustion I know but did you all know that there are comics that explain character backgournds (1 being shephard book!) and another set of comics that follow on from the series.

Aye I didn't know that. I thought half the fun was not knowing exactly, like the so called 'shepard' who seems to have a lot more history.
I know theres a board gameplus expansions on the series which get good reviews.

Yes, I havent played the board game but I have read most of the comics and they are allright for filling in the backstory but the continuations of the story could have been a little better.

"Broadcast history

Firefly consists of a two-hour pilot and thirteen one-hour episodes (with commercials). The series originally premiered in the United States on Fox in September 2002. The episodes were aired out of the intended order. Although Whedon had designed the show to run for seven years,[116] low ratings resulted in cancellation by Fox in December 2002 after only 11 of the 14 completed episodes had aired in the United States.[117] The three episodes unaired by Fox eventually debuted in 2003 on the Sci Fi Channel in the United Kingdom.[118] Prior to cancellation, some fans, worried about low ratings, formed the Firefly Immediate Assistance campaign whose goal was to support the production of the show by sending in postcards to Fox. After it was canceled, the campaign worked on getting another network such as UPN to pick up the series.[75][76] The campaign was unsuccessful in securing the show's continuation.[5]

The A.V. Club cited several actions by the Fox network that contributed to the show's failure, most notably airing the episodes out of sequence, making the plot more difficult to follow.[119] For instance, the double episode "Serenity" was intended as the premiere, and therefore contained most of the character introductions and back-story. However, Fox decided that "Serenity" was unsuitable to open the series, and "The Train Job" was specifically created to act as a new pilot.[13] In addition, Firefly was promoted as an action-comedy rather than the more serious character study it was intended to be, and the showbiz trade paper Variety noted Fox's decision to occasionally preempt the show for sporting events.[117]

The Firefly and those who should burn in the pits of hell for cancelling it discussion does crop up every so often here on the forum.

I do wonder if Joss might have played Elite when he w as young. I think it's very Eliteish.

I'd love to see Serenity in the game. I just love that ship.

For me it's a very similar case to Constantine which was recently cancelled after the 1st season.

I'm now off to sulk and stomp around the forum banning random people for now reason.
