Serious discussion on proper fleet mechanics

Hello commanders

Now that the prospect of colonization of the new bubble has been started. Once again the topic of proper fleet mechanics has been brought up. I feel this topic is never going to go away till we have a definitive answer from FDev. Now we all know that they have said they are talking about it internally and I feel they have come to realize that they are going to have to do something about it.
I have always been an advocate for proper fleet mechanics not just because I am one of the leaders of a player minor faction (EDF) but because I am a fan of elite and I want it to be the best game that it can be.

Now I don't want this discussion to be about the how I would rather it be about the why or why not. We all know that most fleets manager their fleets out side of game and that's all well and good but we can still not represent are ourselves in game and we still don't not have a way for the fleet to interact with each other in meaningful ways. Like the sharing of resources and fleet activities.

I understand that some commanders fear that their maybe great big fleets that take over the galaxy to be honest I feel that would not happen in elite. But I could just be naïve on that one.

But I feel that it is worth the risk. Proper fleet mechanics in my opinion is eventually going to happen but I would rather it happen now than later.

Please let's us keep this discussion civil and mature.
Thank you

Not just some Commanders - the creator, Chief Executive and majority shareholder of Frontier also has some reservations about large player groups: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJzizYUEF9c;t=19m40s

In time, we will see what Frontier are prepared to offer us in this regard.

Every time you post about fleet mechanics, I pirate another EDF ship. :p

I think that if players could simply add a fleet tag to their name, it would not affect the game. Just a little personalization. It would not affect how fleets do their patrols, affect the bgs, pvp, or earn credits. It would however serve to identify the members of various fleets and allow players to respond accordingly.

Oh look that's someone from CODE - i am going to stay away because he probably wants the cargo in my T-6

And that guy is EDF, so he probably wont interdict my T-6

As a mostly Lone Wolf player (in Open), fleets are of no use to me.

But i can potentially see he good and bad from having a fleet mechanic in game.
The good being able to organise larger groups, for all sorts of reasons.
The bad being said groups can also be massive Murder Hobo squads from which there is no escape... Lol

Forgot to add.... The power to add a fleet tag should be with the Fleet leadership.

It may be best to give fleets features on a regular basis but slowly, kind of as a running beta. We call them "pilot programs" in my industry. That way if it doesnt work out with the way David Braben envisions it, it can be scrapped or rolled back with a minimum expenditure of resources.

The ED universe is full of fleets, the game just trys to make it as inconvenient as possible.
Fleetmechanics are already a thing, it just happens to be managed outside the game.

Their are already fleets of murders in game. So have proper fleet mechanics will not effect that at all. My feelings are this proper fleet mechanics would advance player to player interaction.

Yes I understand commanders saying use teamspeak and out side websites and we do but to have the tools in game to represent ourselves and to organize in game would go a long way to helping us build and grow the fleet.
We also would like a meaningful connection with our PMF In game

Only thing I would ask for with fleets is someway to identify my fleet members on my friends list and a fleet tag. I dont think it would. I dont think that would give the murder hobos any more power than they have now.

Fleet? That's just a Winged group of 4 or multi-links of 4s with a Squad Leader in each and an overall Leader. What we need is transactions between Players and ability to create Missions generally. You can have your Fleet as you wish. Then also add Proximity VOIP to organize easier. Everyone is then happy from Solo players to Wings and Fleet Multi-Wings.

Ahhhh, that I'm fine with, if it's just a tag.

I thought a fleet would be like a wing of wings or something.

Being able to pledge to a minor faction would also be pretty cool.
Kinda like PowerPlay, but on a smaller scale.
Your only (NPC) enemies would be factions you are directly at war with.
You could then hop over a few systems and avoid the war entirely if you wanted.

All the negative things you can come up with already happen in game anyway. Gangs of griefers killing commanders, fleet wars attacking each other's BGS. That's not what I am talking about we need meaningful ways for fleets to share resources and work together like fleet size missions. Plus ways for us to communicate to each other as a group like a fleet chat not all of our members log on to teamspeak all the time. And a mechanism that allows us to manage our fleet who joins us plus a way to remove commanders from the fleet of the just don't fit in.
As an example of a fleet size mission something like colonizing the bubble 2.0 could be something the whole fleet could work on.

Given his stated aversion to guilds in that video, I am surprised he signed off on powerplay which was basically ten developer created guilds constantly waging war despite having no in game communication tools to organise their efforts.

Fleets should be a thing where in as well as allowing commanders to pool resources commanders could utilise their wealth to create naval power. Part of the reson I think this is a must in the game is that the game allows single commanders to own multiple ships. Consequently most commanders have multiple ships sitting gathering dust in hangars in their home systems. I think the game would be a lot more interesting to play if we had the ability to put hired NPC's into those mothballed ships and deploy them either as wingmen and or give them seperate missions IE assign an NPC commander flying one of my other ships the task of flying to ABC and buying me N Tonnes of XYZ while I go off bounty hunting.

If you want enhanced communication for your fleet, fine. No problem. As for 'fleet mechanics' which hand over control of in-game assets (stations etc) to groups/clans/fleets, No. Not under any circumstances - this is fundamentally at odds with the way Elite is designed, and the way it has been sold.

As in any online game they never stay the way they was first released they have to evolve to appeal to a wider audience.
And for owning station and outpost I don't see how that would effect anyone's gameplay if a fleet wanted the responsibility of managing an station, outpost or spaceports why not it gives them more to do in game.
