Serious Question, Why cant we name and shame ?

Because then anyone could start a witch hunt by claiming valbarr and Rob At Work are griefing noobs in Mobius. And since angry mobs rarely bother with such minor details as lack of evidence, you would have no recourse to clean your name.

This is the reason. All too easy for a troll to work up a froth in the forum as it is.

Because we cannot expect the moderators here to carry out investigations into what is or isn't a valid claim against another player. Can you imagine how much grief they would get if they had to make decisions like that? Their job is to enforce the house rules here, not adjudicate on players behaviour in-game. If you want to name and shame on your own site or social media space, go ahead. Just don't expect others to publish your claim.

Pretty much as has been said above - society has gone spineless. Everybody is too worried about everyone else, and has all but forgotten about themselves. We walk around miserable because we think if we're happy, someone else is not. And spending so much time worrying about those who are unwilling to worry about themselves, take care of themselves, entertain themselves, be happy themselves, makes everyone else miserable.

We make up nonsense words, denigrate ourselves, abandon common sense because someone else might feel bad. And then we top off this giant s--t sundae with media sensationalism then put a big dingleberry on top of it by shaming anyone who questions what's wrong with this picture.

Shame on all of us for allowing this to happen.

Because there's no way to verify the authenticity of your claims.

im talking about the game doing the verification, it wouldnt let you make a claim of the person didnt attack you or kill you. you would only be able to accuse someone, that the game knows did something.

Could you imagine if, instead, they took a backboned position and said "You people created this, you work it out for yourselves."? Make people take responsibility for their own actions? Inconceivable.

We all know we're not responsible for our own actions, we're just victims.

The solution is simple. "naming and shaming" should require video evidence. Honestly, not that it matters, easy enough to combat log, hide in Solo/Group modes... Let's see the angry mobs throw their flaming pitch forks into Solo...

Which then leads you to the second issue, and probably the most important one: Frontier explicitely forbids harassement, no matter the context. There is a more than reasonable assumption that naming and shaming would be used exclusively to harass players (that's almost literally what the OP describes), both in and out of the game.

And it's still far too easy to spoof, unless you want FDev to waste an enormous amount of time on some sort of automated weapons fire/battle forensics system.

But what is published here is the responsibility of the owners of the site, whether anyone likes it or not. Everything published here is published by them. One can easily avoid any responsibility for what one posts anonymously on a forum. If the site owners are not responsible, no one is.

so what if the game lets you kill a newbie once maybe twice, and then that newbie is allowed to tick a flag, and if you then attack them, YOUR the one that is doing the harassment.

im not talking about the forums anymore. im saying when your in the game, if someone kills you, ie the game registers that they fired first on you, you can go to a station and there would be an option, to set a bounty on that persons head. or inform the local news feed what they did, in case you dont have much money, and it would only let you do this, if that person attacked you first.

I don't do this. I don't (yet) kill other players in the game - I've never had any desire to, and I'm probably not good enough!

BUT - I do believe in game freedom, if people want to grief (in game) they should be allowed to. Why is that a bad thing? It's a game where the combat rank of Elite is the most coveted thing - it promotes killing other ships. We go into HasRes zones and happily kill loads of NPC ships without a care in the world how "noob" they are. We go to Convoy Beacons in famine systems and kill loads of innocent NPC Type 9 pilots for their Chemical Manipulators - that is thoroughly unethical. Nobody complains.

The only failing here, and the only gripe there should be - should be directed at FDev who have failed to make an effecitive crime & punishment system. To be fair they are trying to fix this for 2.4 - we shall see... But I won't blame the griefers. They are just having fun playing the game the way they want to. Players beware! Have fun!!

[It's only a rebuy after all, and money is easy in ED]

Yes, but part of the system is having "good guys" and "bad guys". The system doesn't really make it easy to take out bad guys, but it is incredibly easy to be a bad guy, and have no consequences.

So you think it would be ok to set a bounty on someone because they accidentally pinged a pulse laser off your shields in a HazRES when you got in the way?

No thanks.
