[Serious] Where Horizons Failed (and almost every update in Elite)

and u r us always r on ur dream state false argument

Somebody made a comment about Horizons being pay to win. You disputed it. You're wrong. It is pay to win. It's not a matter of "opinion", it's pay to win. If you PvP and don't own Horizons and you're instanced with a player who does and who has engineered his ship, you're at a significant disadvantage that can only be mitigated by opening your wallet. The fact that Horizons owners and base game owners are instanced together makes Horizons pay to win. You can buy something that gives you a competitive edge against other players who haven't bought it. That's pretty much the definition of pay to win.

The updates suck because they get too much money in advance with preorders. Also working on several other games at same time doesnt help.

Having missed this the first time around...

Yes, I think something like this could work pretty well. A plus would be that it might be easier to develop some sort of road map so people would get an idea of when their preferred career could expect a buff. Of course there would be all sorts of arguing about that :) Bigger features would then have to be slower burn though.

No. You're wrong.

It's not a matter of "opinion", it's simply not pay to win. Horizons is pay to play. You want to play it, you have to pay. Literally nothing you can buy with cash in the game (not the game itself) will give you an advantage in combat.

Ok, Ok I got a long time thinking about it... now i think it's time to start writing about it.

Disclaimer THIS IS MY OPINION.

So right now i think the "mile wide , inch deep" meme is long gone , but the effect is still in game. we have a long area and many thing to do, from trading to pirating, to explore to combat. But none of those things can be said to have any depth on the career it self. Missions for example comes into any kind, you can't come and say, HEY I"M A BOUNTY HUNTER, and have only things for a bounty hunter to do,and it's the same for a Trader.

So what Is the I think is wrong with the way things are done since i joined the game (2.0!)

Well, I think it's how the updates are planed, and the objective of each update.

"Wait, what the hell does this mean?"

It's simple, instead of focusing on "functions" and "gameplay mechanics" Focus on careers trough the development plan.

So lets see a simple comparative between games that i know and LOVE:

----

Elite dangerous 2.0:

2.0 Horizons

launch : landable planets

2.1 Engineers

2.2 Ship launched fighters

2.3 Multicrew/ Holo -me

2.4 ????

------

Arma 3 post-Apex (aka bundle 2)

DLC JETs

DLC orange box

DLC Tanks

DLC Tac Ops

Ok, now lets understand why that i think Arma 3 had a better plan on DLCs/Updates

Arma 3 is a Combined arms game, that already have the JETS/TANK/TATICAL ops already in game. so they are not aditing anything NEW to the table, they are actually getting what they already did and polishing and inserting new functions.

Why this is good?

First, it actually encourage everyone to try the new stuff, some people might never tried to fly fixed wings might give it a try.

Second, While they add new functions to all vehicles (like new navigation tools and interactions , and new stuff for editors and etc.) this is not the MAIN theme, it's not a RADAR DLC, It's a new package for the lacking of good fixed wings physics , and depth that Arma 3 was lacking!

So how can Elite use this into a better , more interesting Updates for US?!

Well , Why not start by getting the most beloved activities(careers) and make Updates based on them and only them?

One Example :

3.0 (whatever it will be)

3.1 The Bounty hunters

10 new bounty hunter missions each with 3 optional chained missions.

New wanted board showing NPCs and Players and tracking capabilities (both would have missions critial messages about NPC and player whereabouts leading us to them!)

New USS , "Call for help!Good payout!" , Big trade NPC having trouble with pirates would broadcast that you'd receive a lange credit amount if you save him.

New USS, "Bounty hunters Wanted" (or "opportunity beacon") , on arriving you get in comms with someone interesting in hire you for some killing, could be good or bad.
(like those old 2.0, "follow my wake so we can talk" stuff I miss that somehow...)

3.2 The Traders
New 3 ships made from other company (NOT LAKON PLEASE!, MAYBE DELACY!)

New Missions reward : Subsidy contract (taken from the old school Transport Tycoon Deluxe!)

https://wiki.openttd.org/images/f/fe/Transportsubsidy_multiplayer.png
A Transport Subsidy or Subsidy is an incentive for you to transport a designated type of cargo from one specific location to another. The Local Authority will usually notify all players about the subsidy through the Newspaper.

The Local Authority will increase the amount of revenue made by delivering the designated cargo type between the two locations mentioned in the subsidy in the next year, which can range from two up to four times the original revenue.

Translating it to E.D. would be something like extra 50% discount on Bought products (maybe one kind only!) or extra 50% on selling for X station (again one kind of product only)
It will have an expiration date of maybe 1 week.

Also, Some USS that SELLS stuff should be added and making trader might have some interest on getting some Collector limpets on their ships?!

USS mission giver that ejects cargo for you to Deliver , Motives might be a lots of those, maybe he dont have time to deliver the cargo or they are with Ship problems , or he dont actually want to go there (ha ha) and he dumps the cargo and you go deliver for some money.

3.3 The Explorers

3.4 The Mercenaries

3.5 The Pirates

And so it goes...

Of course we would be able to get some nice features like SLF and Multicrew yeah! but when they are not the MAIN thing would make more sense since they would be immersed into ONE CONTEXT, for example Multicrew IN It's actual state would go into the Bounty hunter update, since is a focused BH tool right now!

What do you think? Am I crazy? or Am I thinking it right?

I keep hearing ARMA this, ARMA that, and I keep forgetting what the ---- ARMA is...

It's a military shooter. That's why I keep forgetting what it even is.

I ----ing loathe the genre any more. So all just like everything else in the genre. BLEH.

COD, AA, BF1.. they're all just recycles of the same old grab-a-gun shoot-someone that's been with us since Doom.

Yeah, they all have their own little this and that, but at the end of the day, it all comes down to kill count. Bores me until it hurts.

But enough about my being burned completely out on a specific genre.. let's get down to the brass tacks here.

Horizons - Brought us landing on dead worlds. Yay! It's the only reason I bought in to Elite in the first place - I like to fly a space ship, but if I can't land it on a planet, I'm not interested.
But it also stopped there, and squirreled off in some random directions that left me scratching my head.

Engineers was a nice add - since they have planetary bases, and we need to be able to land on planets to make use of them.. sure, I can see how this fits.

Ship-launched Fighters - Doesn't belong here. What does this have to do with landing on planets?

Alien Ruins - At least this is related, they're down on planets we have to be able to land on to interact with, so sure, it fits.

Multi-pew - doesn't belong here at all. What does it have to do with planets?

Hyperdiction - May or may not have any direct relation to the alien ruins. Appears to be the same sort of craft as found crashed on other planets. A lead-in for future content - nice, but..

2.4 - The Mystery

We haven't any idea what is in store for the final leg of Horizons. But please, please, let it have at least something do with planets again - like at the very least, let us start venturing in to Gas Giant atmospheres, if not giving us the Five-of-a-Kind hand, and opening up all the planet types for landing. At this point, I wouldn't even complain if Earth-like worlds just featured inactive cities and little roadways of toy block vehicles like stations have, and were just there for show, as long as I can put my landing gear on their dirt. I don't see this as happening, but one can dream, right?

I've said this before and it's still my gut feeling: in the desire to hit the pre-announced December 16th 2014 launch date FD wrote themselves into a corner by pushing out a product that still contained much placeholder, with MVP code rushed into service to hold it all together. And while each subsequent iteration has largely improved on what came before -- some updates more than others -- the frequent need to push out new features to drive sales, as well as balance the increasingly asymmetric multiplayer aspects, has left zero opportunity to actually go back and rebuild the game's restricted core.

The more time passes, the less inclined I am to believe that this can ever be fully resolved. FD will no doubt add new features, or apply heavy reworking to some aspects such as the mission system, and some will be successful while others will fall by the wayside. But the underlying structure of the game is not going to change now. The economy will always be a giant everlasting firehose of credits with a series of BGS-adjustable taps rather than a structured simulation of galactic commerce. NPCs, beyond the static mission-givers and magic teleporting crew, will never be semi-persistent or interact with player characters in a meaningful or memorable way. The "solid" mechanic of exploration will always be jump-honk-scan, even if we get prettier things to honk at.

ED remains a remarkable technical achievement, presenting as it does a game world of such scale and beauty and, yes, immersion. But the way in which we interact with that world will always be hamstrung by the decisions made in 2014. Much of what was written in the DDA, hugely ambitious yet eminently achievable had the time been allocated, I believe will now remain firmly in the realm of what might have been, rather than what may yet be.

It's still a great game, still the best incarnation of David Braben's three-decade-old vision, and can still be terrific fun to play especially if, like me, you're old-school enough to appreciate its slightly retro charms. But it gives the appearance of having been rushed to release on very shaky foundations, and I fear those foundations just aren't capable of supporting the structures the game would need to reach its true potential.

I would never be happier to be proven wrong than to be proven wrong over this.

This.....very well written and mirrors my own thoughts....have some rep

Whoa thats harsh , Comparing arma to BF and COD is nonsense arma is at least 10 time more complex than both of this game together, not even considering mods. That Aside...

Elite should really focus on giving us MORE planetary content.I'd like more mission based on planets on SRV and ON SHIP... maybe variations of the already done missions... Hey you have to kill a target.... he will landed on X Y cordinate for reapairs. DONE a mission is made of :D

Seriously? [uhh][rolleyes]

Those who own Horizons have access to the Engineers. Those who only own the base game do not. Both are instanced together, so technically, the Horizon player who has done Engineer mods to his/her ship will have a definite tactical/hardware advantage against a Non-Horizons player in a PvP match.

What part of this don't you understand? Looks like all of it to me.

As far as the head line features go it seems to be hit or miss for me. The best part for me seems to be all the little stuff added like book marks and the such.

Two of the games in my steam account, with 4000hrs in each game.
Arma3 and Elite Dangerous.
I am a lot happier with Arma3s Bug fixing, updates and Exploit/cheat measures than I am with Elites.

.. and the under the hood stuff (the real meat of the updates)

eg. vehicle in vehicle nesting (ship-in-ship and SRV-in-ship), cargo transfer between vehicles (SRV-to-ship and cargo transfer back again), floating point module stats (that's engineers and it's massive), avatar postioning in 3D space (SLF) and avatar-in-vehicle nesting ..

In fact .. I just wet myself again.

I have a Lifetime Expansion Pass and I am a patient man.
I always look forward to what FDev have in store for us! :)

I have found initially, that a lot of the expansions haven't really applied to me and it takes me a while to warm up to them (like the engineers) and then I realize why FDev added them.

I'm so jealous! If I had been paying attention, I'd have snagged that myself when it was available. Sadly, I missed it. Regardless, I am willing to continue buying as we go in whatever way that needs to happen, personally.

While I agree there have been stumbles, they're more in the vein of not grasping how modern gamers demand a much more dynamic method of constant minor updaters. Sadly, this often comes across as "GIVE ME STUFF NOW I WANT IT AND YOU'RE LAZY IF YOU CAN'T DO IT" and this makes it a little more difficult to hear for devs and/or teams who aren't used to it. It's just a new dynamic.

On the flip side, gamers who want that (and I agree it's nice when it's done well but it isn't a requirement for me) all too often get all upset for no real reason other than they're simply too immature to grasp that not all teams operate in this way. The Silicon Valley practice made famous by FB of move fast and break things is simply not workable when you're selling a game, in the view of many in the industry. This is especially true when there are investors involved, as FDev has.

Anyhow, that's my 2¢ on it.

2.4 bring on water world landings, splash, underwater flight, only some ships can do it, dolphin, orca, beluga toursit spots underwater, srv on the seabed, moray starboat returns, any ship named after a snake, dissolves.
Ships in water! Couldbe some great missions and Neptune lore..

Soldier - Check.
Gun - Check.
Run around and shoot each other - Check.

Walks like a duck - Check
Quacks like a duck - Check.
Tastes like duck - Check.

Must be a standard-issue FPS game. Features or no, the end result is the same. Who killed the most other Whos. Not my idea of a good time.

Couldn't agree more here - there are so many possibilities untapped.

Consider this:

If you've not ventured out to the alien ruins, it works basically like this - you scan an obelisk with the SRV wave scanner.
If you have the right combination of things in the SRV's cargo hold, you "solve" that obelisk.
If you have one of the right items, nothing special happens. + This could be improved, but w/e.
If you have none of the right items, Ram Tah sends you a message that you're doing it wrong.

But Object Scan + Inventory Contents Check = Result

This alone could be expanded upon tremendously.

Consider: SVR Cargo contains Occupied Escape Pod
Near by, a Medical Facility Terminal.
Scan the Terminal with an Occupied Escape Pod in your cargo hold and.. Results:

A message containing details of the individual in the pod, perhaps how they came to be in said pod (attacked by pirates, crashed while landing, ejected for being an overly demanding passenger) and - add pop-up mission:
Return this pod to Such and Such location for a reward.

Or, said same message indicates the occupant of this pod is your lost Fighter Pilot, now one rank less, and you can either bring them back on as Active Crew or Release them back "into the wild".

Or...

With a Rock Sample in your SRV cargo, you find and scan a Geological Analysis Station to generate Geological Data regarding the planet you're on, or perhaps there is something unique about this specimen - perhaps its makeup is not like the rest of the planet, suggesting it may have originated somewhere else - add mission hook to learn more about it.

And so on and so on, for all manners of items we can retrieve.

Just this would so enhance planetary surface operations exponentially.

The Arma comparison is understandable I feel, as Bohemia are a fellow small company to FD. But instead of comparing Elite to Arma, you should instead be comparing it to Dayz. Elite and Dayz are in very similar slow development and this is due to the size of the dev team assigned to it. This is the most important part, since it's pretty hard to get around. Of course it would be nice to see a patch that improves things for everyone, but if you look at the man hours that go into each Elite patch, you have to wonder how much good that would do if applied to each aspect of the game that needed attention; that attention would be spread very thin indeed.

I do like the idea of having more modular updates to the game though, even if they're not my cup of tea. The option to avoid buying an additional feature is fine, as long as avoiding it wont impact my gameplay. I'd take an APC or cargo hauler style SRV DLC and drop money on that in an instant, or new ships would be great too. A patch that makes all the professions slightly more interesting? not so much.
