[Serious] Where Horizons Failed (and almost every update in Elite)

I understand your point, but don't entirely agree. It's more subtle than that.

I have access to engineers, so it's more like pay-to-grind than pay-to-win. I've only engineered my engine. It's not worth it to me, to engineer weapons, since I'm not engaging in PvP. Ideally, players with engineered ships would not be placed in the same instance as someone with "vanilla" modules. That would be more fair (even for Horizon players).

According to Urban Dictionary, "pay-to-win: Games that let you buy better gear or allow you to make better items then everyone else at a faster rate and then makes the game largely unbalanced even for people who have skill in the game without paying."

Horizons doesn't quite meet that definition, imo. For example, you can avoid all that by playing in Mobius or Solo, like I do (even though I have Horizons).

If you want to PvP and you want to be competitive with people who have Horizons, better get your wallet out or you have no chance. That's pay to win. The fact that PvP is avoidable does not mean that Horizons and the Engineers is not pay to win, it clearly is.

Looks like a soldier-shooter to me.

Still looks like a solder-shooter.

So does this.http://blogs-images.forbes.com/erik...lefield-1-10.18.2016-20.07.36.79-1200x675.jpg

And this - and it's not even out yet.

Same thing here.

And it's not that I don't like FPS games.. I've played SO MANY FPS games I've surpassed burned-out by boosted light years.

And I really can't fathom anything that could possibly be done with an FPS game that hasn't already been done a thousand times already.

Sure, the graphics keep getting better, and the details keep expanding, but in the end, it's still the same old thing. And that's just fine if that's what you enjoy - and clearly plenty of people do, or they wouldn't make so many of these types of games. I just keep passing on them. Maybe some day something will come out that gives me that "I have to play this" feeling again.

You clearly don't understand what makes a video game what it is. By your logic, ED = NMS = Evochron = X: BF = FE2 = XTension = X3:TC = Elite = Freelancer = XWing = XWing V Tie Fighter and so on. That's just not how it works and you know it. You're just being obtuse.

Arma 3 is one of the most broken games out there! The only people I know who play it use heavily modified versions.

Don't know when you last took a look at it. I play it unmodded. It's perfectly fine.

You too should stop LOL...

And indigo one thing that make ArmA way better than any other FPS, Moding community ;) Hell I have about to 20Gb or ArmA and 100Gb of Mods on my computer. Think about a Weapon... arma has...
Think about a Plane... Arma has.. It's just amazing community ArmA series have...

I'll not argue that - a talented community with at least good resources can pull off some amazing work. I think back to the height of Elder Scrolls III : Morrowind, and some of the community content created, because we were supplied with some top-notch resources from the development team, including an import/export plugin for 3ds Max, vertex weighting charts, and reference models. Some of my own works included transparent, interactive display cases, urns that could be shattered, and a hot-air balloon you could sail around the land.

But for all that, Community Development is a Final Stage - once all the other development is complete. Morrowind lived far beyond its years thanks to the Community Development efforts. So if Frontier does indeed have and follows through on it's 10-year plan for Elite, then the 11th year could, and likely should, be the birth of Community Development - and the Community can likely carry this until the release of Elite: Deadly - or whatever comes next.

Only problem I see with this is that people would be paying for an expansion that essentially fills out the careers.
Imagine trying to sell that:

FDev: "Hey, here's the new expansion."
Customers: "Wait, I have to pay for depth for the pillars of the gameplay?"
FDev: "Yep, that's right."

So, no, I don't think that's necessarily a good idea. I agree that it's needed, but locking career depth behind a paywall seems like a pretty terrible way to go.

s'fair point. Many might not like it and FD are worried about that.

Hi,

There are not enough careers in Elite. (And some are useless, financially speaking)

At the announcement of the 2.3, a new one could have appeared: make the taxi. As we teleport into a multi-crew ship, it's dead. Otherwise it was possible : if we can leave the player in a station, from where he can buy a ship or to repatriate his ones. In addition it could have created a small economy with players who sell their services.

Horizons created only secondary gameplay. I hope the future update after 2.4, will add careers.

(Sorry if my english is not good, i'm French ^^')
